It will cost the taxpayers ~$50 billion or even more in an event of a Chap 11 filing of GM since it will be backed by the gov't. Now $17.4 billion doesn't seem that bad now does it?

that is giong to be bad. Every single GM car is going to next to nothing in value. Most people who got a car in the past 3-4 years from them will be almost instantly upside down.

When 2 other brands where drop in the past a 2 year old car from those brand was worth less than a 5 year old car from the other brands.....

This would be painful for the country in the terms of jobs in good economic times. In bad well a hell of a lot worse. 1.1% drop in the GDP was due to GM alone.
