Don't you think it would benefit Apple to also provide a subsription service like Napster. I want to use Apple iTunes above any Microsoft product. But the $9.99 /month subscription service is great. I can download as much music as I want and I can play it to my home stereo because I have it connected to my computer.

Also, after reading another thread, I truly believe that Apple needs to do as much as it can to get AAC as the standard in both music store services and other portable players. Apple has in the past limited the availability of its products and it has hurt them in the long run. This is one reason Microsoft is such a large company; they allow other companies and devices to use their technology. For example, they allow as many companies as possible to use the protected WMA files. Furthermore, there are other markets for portable media players than Apple is currently in. This would include small flash style players that can be easily worn and used in the gym and other settings where individuals don't need to have 4 gigs or more of space and such. Then if people get those that are available, the have to use mp3 or the new WMA protected files. Then people will have to switch to an online music store that sells the file types that is supported by their player.

In the end, I love Apple and use their products. But are they continuing to shoot themselves in the foot and continually positioning themselves as a small niche company? What do you think?

Yes.

But they won't do it.

Steve is on record saying that people don't want to rent music.

And that's Steve. What Steve says we want and don't want it what we get and don't get whether it's really what we want or not (she sells sea shells on the sea shore). Steve also says you don't want an Apple PDA and you don't want a computer in the living room. So you don't. Stop arguing with Steve!

If I wanted to pay $9.99 a month to listen to stuff I have no say in I'd do XM Radio...

..oh wait, I do...

I want to *buy* my songs. If I wanted to pay to just listen to stuff I'll do it with XM

What makes iTunes the best is that it's simple. You simply go, and buy a song you like. No fine print, nothing to sign up for, just go and click buy, that way everyone can use it, even non-techies. Adding a subscription service would be a bad move.
