Hi,
So I just got myself a new Macbook Pro (looooove it!) and was going to sell off my old Macbook to a friend. So after I transferred everything to the new Pro, I went about cleaning all my personal data off the old Macbook (13", white, 10.4.11). I followed these steps from this very forum to a T, although I deleted the old account along with all the old data since I had already transferred it.
I noticed that after this, whenever I selected "shut down," it acts like it's about to shut down. But then it gets to the blue screen, and everything just instantly loads back up, like a restart. I went in and turned off automatic logins. Now whenever I do "shut down" it takes me to the login screen. I can shut down from there if I want and it works ok. But it seems like the "shut down" option should just shut the computer down! Also, I want to use automatic login since the computer only needs one account.
Stuff I've tried -
Running hardware test (holding T key on boot) - Everything fine.
Repairing permissions with disk utility - Tried it
Running Applejack from the boot command prompt in auto mode - Done
Creating a separate account and trying from there - same issues
I've searched a bunch and it seems like this issue has come up before, but threads either just die off or it ends with them being told they have a hardware problem. I believe this is a software problem because it only cropped up after I removed my old account, and seems linked to the login technique.
I guess the only option from here is a complete fresh install, but I'd love to avoid that if someone here has any ideas. Let me know if you need any more info, and thank you in advance for any input!
EDIT: So thanks to anyone who looked at this and tried to come up with a response. I realize it's a weird problem. The good news is that I seem to have solved it by reinstalling OSX. Everything's back to normal and miraculously it didn't blow away my apps, which was my major fear. So anyone looking at this topic in the future should give that a try. I just used the option that saves a copy of the previous drive as an archive when I reinstalled.
