I have some 20 minute .mov quicktime files. I want to segment them into 5 minute self contained movies. Is there a program I can set and run to do this? Or do I need QTPro and have to cut and past manually?

I movie does not import my .mov files in order to split them.
I know I can with QT Pro, but I wanted a solution I could set and forget. YOu can do it in QTPro. a free alternative is iMovie.

I think you have to export the .mov as a DV stream to get them in to imovie, i dont have imovie installed so can't try it myself.
To take a section of the .mov with QT pro is very easy.
move the pointer to where you want the segment to start on the time line.
hold down the shift key drag the pointer 5 min up the time line. you will now have a darkend are on the time line between your in and out. Click and hold down and drag the movie image from the QT viewer to your desk top. you will now have a file called "Movie Clipping 1" that is the segment you selected.
do not delete the original file, as the clipping refers back to the original.
if you open the movie properties window & select time you will see the timing of the clips you have selected.
should take you 2 min, i will be quicker than convering the .mov to dv then in to imovie & exporting them again.

QT Pro is very handy to have. it's definitely worth the money.
at first i just used it to save movies off the net, but on a project i realised you can open a video in QT Pro and then copy parts out and save them as seperate movies. nice! :D
also very easy and quick to use. a great tool to have.

Split&Concat seems very basic... and it doesn't look like you can split files on a time basis, you can only split in MB or kb.
probably only useful for newgroup type people...

My goal is not to split the size of the files, but the time. I have large files in terms of time, and I need to split them into segments to stream on the web., My work place does not want its training files to be over 5 minutes in length per segment,. Mine are 20 each, so I need to divde them.
My problem with QT Pro. I cannot split using cut and paste without needing to have the original file, How do I make these files self contained so I only need to UL the smaller files and not the linked original?

http://media-convert.com/convert/
This website does convert (split) files according to bytes, but if you test it out a few times you might find the byte rate that is 5 minutes long. You'll need to play with it.
