I'm a little freaked here. I have a 160GB HD in my eMac, and I noticed that I've already hit the 85GB mark of free space.

I know the common answer will be "Delete stuff you don't use", but I was wondering if there were any programs that I could use to go through my HD with and delete those little preference files and other stuff that I don't need or use anymore.

Also, any general tips for HD Space maintenence? ;-)

How much RAM do you have? If you don't have much RAM and run a lot of apps, then virtual memory will take up the slack, sometimes to the tune of a gig or more. If you download a lot of files, then there may be incomplete temporaries around that you can delete. Clearing out unused preferences generally doesn't amount to a hill of beans on a modern HD.

But yea, in the end the only way your going to reclaim significant drive space is to look at what you don't want yourself.

Download a file on most P2P clients and it downloads to an "Incomplete" folder. These files are generally not usable because they are incomplete. If you get disconnected from whoever your downloading from, the file may never get completed. If you do a lot of downloading, you may have a lot of these files which can add up to a significant amount of space.
