But Sox star's gift to bride ends up in collector's hands

If it truly is the thought that counts, Boston Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra hit a home run with his wedding present for soccer star Mia Hamm.

Garciaparra had a 1959 Corvette totally redone -- a frame-off restoration custom-built to his specifications -- to give to his wife on their wedding day, last Nov. 15.

The '59 symbolism is unique. The 5 is for his uniform number; the 9 was hers with the US National soccer team and the now-defunct Washington Freedom of the WUSA, the Women's United Soccer Association.

As the story goes (attempts to interview Garciaparra were unsuccessful), their plan was to drive the car up the West Coast as part of their honeymoon.

Garciaparra took delivery of the car. Hamm drove it part way around the block, then decided that driving the beautiful but high-powered 'Vette made her too nervous.

Once upon a time, they may have parked the car in a barn, to be discovered 50 years later by a new generation of auto enthusiasts. That would have made a story for our grandchildren. Instead, they did what Generations X and Y do: They auctioned it off.
