How awesome!!!

Not many of you would share these feelings, but for someone who is a diehard Pearl Jam fan and Apple enthusiast, this is a match made in heaven.

From the content of the article it makes perfect sense too - it's so easy to make great looking dvds using DV cams, FCP and DVDSP that it makes sense for Pearl Jam to be using these tools on tour, and for their own crew to do it rather than getting a professional crew - especially so for those of you who can remember the famous moment in the Even Flow video where Eddie tells the film crew 'Josh turn down the lights, this isn't a TV studio it's a ****ing rock concert!'

But the results are fantastic, better than most of the bs over-produced music DVDs of chart-pop and other rock groups. And so much more authentic too - really feels so much closer to the action, and less staged or melodramatic. And imagine that set up Kevin has on the tour bus - what an incredible job!

I remember the 12 and 17 inch Powerbooks came out in Januray 2003, just after I'd bought my iBook. I was showing a friend of mine the promo vids for them on my iBook just before we went to the Adelaide show last year on 16 February. And to think that right then Kevin was sitting in the Entertainment Centre busily at work on his own Powerbook, cutting together the Sydney shows.

And Liz was shooting DV right behind us on the third night in Melbourne - in fact the photo of her on page 3 of the article is on that night (you can tell by the vent/balcony and the 'No Moshing' etc sign in the background), and the camera just misses us - we were next to the girl in pink. So nearly realised two dreams - being in a Pearl Jam DVD and being on the Apple website!

Great article. I am wholly satisfied :)

Hmm... interesting read. I never heard a lot of Pearl Jam music after "Ten" because they stopped doing music videos and stopped selling tickets through ticketmaster. They became a niche band. It didn't hurt their popularity though. They still have a lot of fans, I am just not one of them. Reminds me a lot of Apple... they were very "think different." I would rank They Might Be Giants up there as well as a band with a large fan base despite "thinking different." Wonder how many other bands there are with a lot of staying power and a big fan base that manage to maintain that status despite their commitment (or because of it) to "thinking different"?

Nny,

I would say that all popular musical acts are in their own way 'niche' - some rock your boat, others don't. And I don't think you can measure that by chart or critical success. A lot of people may buy an album for once-off appeal, but beneath there there's a certain percentage of hardcore fans who would go further and - and I think that applies across the board, from Britney to The Beatles. So you're right, 3% market appeal is probably not a bad thing ;).

But following from your question, I can think of a few 'niche' bands who continue to polarise the public and their fanbase by 'thinking different': Radiohead and U2 spring to mind (though U2 haven't really been 'out there' since Pop). Both are far more interesting to listen to than most of the radio-friendly drivel out there. And to give credit where it's due, I think that Madonna has seen herself through a huge variety of phases where she has been 'thinking differently' musically than she had been before.

And obviously people using Apple creative applications count for extra brownie points for sad people like me :D.
