View Full Version : Unibody gestures on white macbook?
iPhone 3.0!!!
Apr 4, 2009, 02:29 PM
Some were saying that having trackpad.prefPane from a unibody would allow 4 finger gestures on a white macbook
i got the trackpad.prefpane from my friend's unibody but it still shows up as the same as before (no 3 or 4 finger gestures) i am pretty sure this is because my macbook knows its not a unibody. There must be some files in the OS that tell it what kind of computer it is; like when on a shared network my computer shows up as a little picture of a white macbook.
What I want to know is if there's a way to modify some files on OSX to make my mac think its a unibody (just like the way i was able to make my ipod touch think it was an iphone by finding N45.plist and M68.plist and switching their names)
You can AIM me if u have an answer: dylanforesz

It's a hardware difference. No software can overcome this.

I think it requires hardware to have gestures like the unibody. Dang tallest skill got in before me!

Well, that's Linux, then. When you write whatever program that was for OS X, let us know.

Yes but it shows that the macbook is capable of recognizing multi-finger gestures its just OSX that wont let it use them

It is not possible. It requires hardware, no white or black Macbook has this hardware. End of.

This guy can do it on a white macbook

OP: you have the same problem I do. I have one of the original core duo macbook pros, and the early intel notebooks do not have the correct hardware to recognize more than 2 fingers. sad, I know...

The hardware supports it, it's only apple stopping it working on osx.

Exactly! just like how older macbooks were able to hack their way into having two finger scrolling
Someone just needs to write a simple app to let us do this
or
will Multiclutch work with the previous macbooks somehow?

I'm pretty sure the older macbooks and macbook pros lack a special chip apple added to decode 3+ fingers. all of the older apple laptops were able to have backward support for 2 fingers because there wasnt any extra hardware needed.
the multitouch trackpads have an iphone-esque chip, which your macbook lacks. it cant be done.
EDIT: how old is your macbook? what processor does it have? if it's a core duo model, or a first-run core 2 duo, I think you're SOL. but, if it's a slightly newer white macbook, you may be able to...

Right, I take no responsibility if this doesn't work and if it buggers your keyboard and trackpad, you're doing this at your own risk, k?
There is a chance this will work, there is a chance it won't work, there is a chance it will make your keyboard and trackpad erratic/unresponsive and you will need to put your original kext back and hope that fixes it (you can connect up external USB keyboard and mice to do this).
Here's an article detailing what to do:

Here's the modified kext file they talk about (I'm hosting it on my dropbox as all the websites that had it have 404'd):

THANK YOU!!! thats exactly what i was looking for
but i think you uploaded the wrong file u must have uploaded your backed up file because the trackpad system preferences pane still is the same as before

Seeing as the older macbooks are able to recognise two fingers for scrolling, would it be possible to get the pinch and rotate features as these only need to recognise two fingers.
Post as soon as you try out that kext file please

This guy (http://randomtruth.110mb.com/blog/) got it working on Linux, and says he's starting development on an OS X driver.
I now consider the Linux Multi-Touch driver complete and will proceed to making the Mac OSX one.

The kext didn't work. The modded kext only enables the gestures on macbooks that already know their capable of it thats why this mod is for some MBPs and the first MBA. i need to get the appleUSBtopcase.kext (to fool it into thinking it has a unibody trackpad) and appleUSBmultitouch.kext (to enable it) from a unibody MB someone please send these to me

It's been rumored that they would expand it in Snow Leopard. I'm not so sure about those rumors now because I haven't heard them in a while but you all may want to wait and see.

well i transfered:
AppleUSBmultitouch.kext
appleUSBtopcase.kext
appleHIDmouse.kext
from a unibody
no luck :( guess it apple is too smart for that
althought the 4 finger gestures work wonderfuly on my macbook with random truth's driver running linux
ideas?

I don't know if everyone understood the point. If it works in Linux then it's not a hardware problem but a software problem. Let me state this clearer, the hardware supports it, OS X doesn't.
I don't know people automatically jump to the conclusion that the hardware doesn't support it when it doesn't work in MAC OS X. Apple is known to limit the capabilities of certain hardware by not providing support in the drivers. The iPhone was fully capable with copy and paste and A2DP and bluetooth data transfers from the start but chose not to implement it for some reason until much later, probably to milk more money from the consumers.

I jumped to the conclusion that the hardware doesnt support it because the early macbooks and macbook pros DONT. if you ran that same linux software on my core duo macbook pro, you wouldnt have the 4 finger gestures. in your case, it is apparently a software limitation. I cant give the rationale for others' reasons for jumping to that conclusion, but I have given mine, and it is valid.
dont assume others are being ignorant... there is a lot of wealth of information that the members here bring to bear... it's how to use it that's the key

hmm, maybe you guys could try the VoodooPS2Controller instead of the appleps2controller? the white macbook afaik, has a synaptics touchpad, so gestures should work with it :)
