Apple has released a new version update (http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes_8_1_1_for_Mac) for iTunes today that brings the application up to version 8.1.1.:iTunes 8.1.1 adds support for renting HD movies and provides a number of bug fixes, including addressing issues with VoiceOver and syncing with iPhone or iPod touch.iTunes 8.1 was released (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/03/11/itunes-8-1-now-available-for-download/) in early March and added a number of new features (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/03/11/itunes-8-1-now-available-for-download/).

So does it fix the random pauses I'm having in iTunes now? Even in the Windows version but Tiger is worse off than Leopard.

+1 - I hate that I cannot scroll like I used toIn Tiger it just beachballs whenever you start it up for about a minute. It freaked me out the first time because I thought it would never respond again or it was a broken installation. The interesting thing is that when I run Leopard on that same iMac it happens in Leopard too.
In Leopard/Windows Vista you get weird pauses in the middle of a song and have to hit play again or it takes 5-10 to load up a new song when you click on it.

Same - Tiger on my iBook and Leopard on my iMac. I've had no problems with either one other than a lag in the CoverFlow department. I never use it because I'm simply not a fan. I'm even more displeased with CoverFlow becoming a navigation option for everything, but other than that, I have no complaints.

It COULD be, but I highly doubt it would be because 8.1.1 of iTunes was released.
Apple has a habit of releasing several updates simultaneously. There was no new DevBuild of 10.5.7 over the weekend that I've heard of, so that suggests that release is quite close. If not today, then I would expect it by the end of the week. Or maybe it's just me....

Regardless of how long it takes to download, Kar98 has definitely got a point. Why can bug fixes not simply be patches rather than full installs? A bit foolish to create applications unable to be patched.

Not really if you actually read the notice
iTunes 8.1 is now faster and more responsive. You will enjoy noticeable improvements when working with large libraries, browsing the iTunes Store, preparing to sync with iPod or iPhone, and optimizing photos for syncing.
In addition, iTunes 8.1 provides many other improvements and bug fixes, including:
• Supports syncing with iPod shuffle (3rd generation).
• Allows friends to request songs for iTunes DJ.
• Adds Genius sidebar for your Movies and TV Shows.
Oh, rather, anyone else confused by the fact that it actually TELLS us what it fixed instead of "stability and bug fixes"?

Hardly an extensive list and in seems to be consistent with what we had under Steve.
iTunes 8.1.1 adds support for renting HD movies and provides a number of bug fixes, including addressing issues with VoiceOver and syncing with iPhone or iPod touch.

I'm sure they could create patches but what would be the point, if replacing the entire app is simple and painless? Patch procedures get messy if you have patches on top of patches, and it complicates testing to support all of the patch permutations. It's much simpler to just say you've got version 8.1 or 8.1.1 or whatever.

Two finger scrolling in cover flow left and right was impossible and unpredicatble on the glass trackpads. This is now fixed in 8.1.1 - scrolls as it should. Nice.
Also (slightly off topic) I filed another bug report for the same weird behaviour when using pinch to zoom (no precision) in Safari 4 Beta.

24 hours is the same I get out of the video store, for the same price.
There are a lot of movies worth watching once, but not nearly so many worth the money to watch many times.

8.1 is just working too well for me right now to justify updating and breaking something on me. Although for some reason after that patch, it stopped showing the "total track time" on the right side of the display box, and now always changes itself into the "time remaining" number instead. Not a deal breaker (obviously) but just annoying how something as simple as that could break.
Did anyone else have that problem after updating to 8.1? Did anyone notice? If this fixes it I'll update but if not, I'll just leave things as is.

All these releases/updates/fixes is a pain the a$$ and annoying! Seems more like a Microsoft practice.
Hopefully it does not require a reboot. I tired of the bouncing icon.
I find bugs even more annoying than a simple click to fix them. The bug whereby the audio selection menu in the title menu bar didn't work in 8.1.0 is now happily FIXED in 8.1.1. Maybe they do read bug reports once in awhile....
I keep reading that 8.1.1 adds support for HD movie rentals, but this doesn't appear to be true. I can't find a single HD movie to rent. There are several hundred or more available to my two AppleTV units so maybe it would be a good idea if Apple news sites actually tried the update before posting things that it doesn't actually do. Or is this a situation where only SOME movies are available to rent in HD for computers while all are available to AppleTV? I've found exactly NONE to rent on the computer thus far so I'd say it is far more likely that it is simply not supported.
Well, that doesn't make any sense. Why would they have left the 8.1.0 crap in there?
It only said "8.1" features here. There was no mention of 8.1.0 in the feature list so the features do fit what was listed, even if that doesn't really fit the upgrade. But given how close this release was to 8.1.0, maybe they figure a lot of people wouldn't have seen the 8.1 list if they skipped over the last update.
would you actually want to rent an HD movie?
24 hours to watch a movie isn't worth paying for - i'd rather pay an extra 5-10 bucks and own it
HD movies are $20, not $10-15 as your post suggests. I only watch most movies ONCE. Why on earth would I want to spend 4x as much plus use 5-7GB of space to store said move on my hard drive for a movie I have no desire to watch again? So yes, I do RENT HD movies (only AppleTV; I see none to rent from iTunes thus far). As for 24 hours, it generally only takes 1.5-3 hours to watch a movie, so yes that's generally enough.
ESSENTIAL FEATURE MISSING:
Resume playback. That simple!
Even the old SoundJam MP from which iTunes was created had it. Great to listen from head to toe large playlists on iTunes on the Mac.
I don't know what makes you think it's missing in the first place. It's under Get Info -> Options as "Remember Playback Position". It works for ALL media items from movies to music videos to just plain audio music. Try it out.
No, that remembers the position in the song, he wants to keep going where he left off in a playlist.
If that is the case, I don't really get what he's looking for. You mean to LEAVE a playlist and go do something else like watch a movie and then come back later and have it remember where he left off before he decided to abandon listening to the playlist? Or do you mean to exit iTunes or shut down the computer or what? Otherwise, stopping playing music just pauses it. It will resume playing wherever you paused it.
I just tried playing a song in the middle of a playlist and then left it and went back to the general music library and started another song. When I went back to the playlist, the song I was playing was still high-lighted so I could resume where I left off. What am I missing here?

I'm still having the issues synching my wife's iPhone that suddenly appeared after installing 8.1.052. I thought 8.1.1 would resolve this but everytime I plug the phone in all I get is verifying iPhone on the screen for AGES! It seems to try and then hang and I have to end task through task manager (windows xp) and it's really starting to annoy me as essentially my wife can't use her phone as it was intended.
Does anyone have any idea what can be done to sort tis? Is it fairly easy to downgrade iTunes to the version before 8.1.052?
Thanks

Move to the UK. We get 48 hour rentals, and free health care.
You got us on the 48 hour rentals, but your health care isn't free. You pay for it on the front end, we pay for it on the back end.

Move to the UK for the health care? That's the craziest thing I've ever heard.

I think that since 8.1 you can move back and forward in the iTunes Store by means of the three-finger swipe, like in Safari.

YES!!! I just noticed this on my MBA. Really nice to see Apple implementing this across the spectrum of apps. :)

I've installed and reinstalled 8.1.1 several times on Vista, but I keep getting a message before it opens saying "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing...please reinstall iTunes".
All I did was upgrade iTunes, nothing else and now it's saying this every time I open it. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Anyone notice if 811 fixes the 'slowness' problem introduced in 8.1?

What 'slowness' problem are you referring to? 8.1 is much faster with larger libraries. I don't notice any slowdowns here and I'm running my whole house library on a 1.8GHz PPC Mac.

I see a 64-bit version of 8.1.1 for Windows. Is this a first?
If it's for Windows XP 64-bit it will be.

Am I the only one annoyed by the information window that cannot be closed? Getting info on a movie in the iTunes Store opens a window that is so tall the close box is not visible. With iTunes 8.1, I could press Cmd-W twice; the first would close the main iTunes window, the second (last) would close the info window. With iTunes 8.1.1 the only way to close the info window is to quit the application.

Since iTunes 8.1, podcast syncing with 2nd Gen shuffles has been broken. I was sad to see this latest update doesn't fix things.
There is a lengthy discussion about the iTunes 8.1 and 8.1.1 syncing problems with the 2nd Gen Shuffle on the Apple discussion forums here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1939145&start=0&tstart=0
Hate to hear that, I had all those problems listed and it was a pain to go back to 8.0.x because none of my previous iTunes libraries worked and basically had to start over. I'm just dreading that I will need 8.1.x for iphone 3.0 when it comes out and the shuffle problems won't be fixed:(

All these releases/updates/fixes is a pain the a$$ and annoying! Seems more like a Microsoft practice.
The difference is that you have to download updates and reboot nearly every other day with Windows. The last time iTunes was updated was over a month ago.

When I click between libraries and playlists it takes 2-3 seconds (sometimes 5) to switch to what i've clicked on. it used to happen instantly in earlier versions.

would you actually want to rent an HD movie?
24 hours to watch a movie isn't worth paying for - i'd rather pay an extra 5-10 bucks and own it
Hear hear! :D
I am probably going to get an HD movie or two, provided a good one actually comes out of a studio in this decade. :D

I'm still not sure why you would BUY a movie when you haven't seen it before... what if you don't like it and you paid the extra cash for nothing? How can you say there are no good movies this decade but be willing to buy every movie you want to watch? Buying them would imply that you like them... I'm not intending to be offensive I just want to know why.
I can of course understand why you would buy something you've already seen.

It happens instantly here (no 2 sec delay switching between libraries and playlists) and like I said, I'm using a PowerMac from 2001 (upgraded to ~2005 specs-- see sig.) Maybe you've got a memory issue? What kind of Mac are you using and how much memory do you have?

well, it happened when I upgraded to 8.1, so not sure it's a mac issue. 2.4GHz with 4GM Ram. (mid 2007 imac). 8.1.1 did not make it as snappy as it used to be.... (thanks for the thoughts though)
