Can a PPC Mac boot Linux?

Can I install a PPC version of Linux onto a PPC mac and boot into it without problems?

Yep. There are builds of both Debian and Ubuntu for PPC. There's also Yellow Dog Linux, which is based on the Fedora distro.

Be aware though, a lot of the officially supported stuff such as Flash Player only works on the Intel platform. However, as with everything in the OSS world there are alternatives.
