Hi I'm new to Mac Forums and need some help on my specific situation. I consider myself a knowledgeable Mac user but RAID confuses me not because I don't understand it, but I don't know which is best for my situation.
I currently have 2 Lacie Big Disks, each enclosure has 2 500gb drives, for a total of 4 drives and 2TB. The drives are HFS, linked together via firewire 800 and connected to the PPC Mac Mini via firewire 400 running 10.5 server. I use one of the drives for TV Shows, and the other for Movies and have total about 1.2TB of data that my family regularly accesses via their Macbooks, and my collection is always growing. Currently the data on those drives isn't backed up, and the performance can be slow sometimes and I think RAID 5 would fix both those problems, I could be wrong. I'm just curious if I could run RAID 5 with my current configuration or do I need more capacity or a better external enclosure, and if I do how do I actually do it in Disk Utility. I know it's complicated but any advice would be greatly appreciated.
