1.2Ghz 512K L2 G4 133FSB is not a bad processor, and I want to get 1.25GB of ram....... but the 9200 w/ 32MB of ram sorta sucks... what games will run good on this iBook?

Thanks

your not going to be to impressed with that ibook. but i will agree with the above member, warcraft will play nicely just because of blizzards excellent mac coding.

I wish there were more "true" Mac game companies - most just do quick & dirty ports from their Windows versions, hence the terrible performance on Macs.

Another game that would run well, since the company who made it is a Mac-only, is Nanosaur II.

Well... technically, even possible to launch UT2004. But would I recommend it? That's another story.

The games that you've mentioned should all run fine, really. You're going to need to download the 1.10 update of Starcraft to run it on OS X, but that's not a big deal.

Anything else you'd like to know?

Your computer will run Sim City 4 but it will run it slower than molasses on a cold day in antarctica. On the box it requires at least 32mb of VRAM but they should have put 64 because even with 128mb it slows down once the cities get to be a little larger.

I play starcraft on my powerbook every day, i'm sure an ibook could handle that.

And Simcity 4 is slow for large cities even on x86 machines. ("back in the day", my xp1800+ felt the pain)

Well Simcity 2000 will run like molasses on a hot day on the surface of the sun. :D If you like the old simcity I would suggest checking out SimCity 4, maybe just keep the graphics down or run it on your PC. It is absolutely incredible. I was a SC2000 addict but now, I practically dream SC4. ;)

Spare me the BS dude. I tried UT2k4 on 12"pbook and its nearly unplayable on large maps. And forget the ONS and Assault modes.

Why don't ya take some screenshots with fps on your 800 ibook in assault mode. I can't wait to see them.

I downloaded the Unreal 2004 demo for my iMac 800MhZ with 512MB of RAM. I also downloaded it on my ATI Radeon 9800 equipped PC, and well... who ever plays on my PC has a pretty big advantage.
Unreal will launch on the Mac, and play, as long as everything is turned to low, the resolution is like 640x480 (800x600 is too slow) and all effects are turned off.
Strategy games should run pretty good. I wonder how the new powerbooks would handle Unreal, with the 64 MB graphics cards and all.

Yeah that sounds more like I'd expect to hear...
it's just cant run normally on 800 ibook in ONS or ASSAULT mode when it was unplayable on 1ghz pbook.

Sorry Hector but the others are right... the demo runs.... but very badly.

Games that I have installed on my iBook that run nicely are all a little older (aside from WC3:FT):

Aliens Vs Predator
Civ3
AOE:Age Of Kings
Fallout 2
Baldurs gate 2
Warcraft 2
Warcraft 3 (Plus Frozen Throne expansion)
Quake 3

As you can see they are almost all 2D strategy or RPG's
Aliens and Quake3 both run great, but... they aren't exactly new are they?

Medal of Honour: Allied Assault and Star Trek Elite Force use the same engine as Q3... so they should run too...

What kinda of framerates are you getting?

Halo will run, but luosy.

Ghost Recon will run nicely. So will Rainbow Six 3 If you turn down things just a tad.

Has the Demo for Unreal Tournament been patched yet or is still the version that cuts your frame rate in half on non dual proc machines?

Dippo: the iBook is 1024x768 not 1600x1200 and sheesh those numbers in that graph include full screen antialiasing and filtering.

I was just showing that if the next generation cards can't play the game all out, then their is certianly no hope for a 800Mhz iBook with an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 to play it, even at 1024x768 without AA, AF!

HAHA, This is what happens when mac fan boys overestimate Mac power.
Hector, Do you see the comp I have? Well with 16ppls w.o AA everything on highest 1600x1200 (on dell 20") and 1280x1024 apple 17", in Assault modes fps barely breaks over 30-35 fps barrier. And many times it's in low 20s and even crosses into teens territory at times.
And when I had nVidia 5200 card in Dual G5, ONS-Torlan wasnt decently playable on anything higher than 800x600 with details on medium.
Ati 9600 in my first g5 was doing ok @1024x768/high (but i didnt test ONS/Assault back then).
I do think u maybe able to play DM-GAEL with lowest settings and something like 640x480 res. But I don't believe game can run fine on 800ibook on any map that isnt a tiny square box.

I just downloaded the demo for my PC, and I baffled at what is holding me back.

At 1280x1024 max settings no AA no AF I am getting about 25-30 fps.
Now, I cranked it down to 640x480 with lowest settings no AA no AF and still I get an average of 30-35 fps!!!

I am thinking that this game is being limited by my CPU!!!

I tried all of the sound settings but they only change the fps by a few frames.

I am running this on a 2.25Ghz Athlon with a Overclocked Radeon 9600XT.

**For fun I tried 1280x1024 max settings 6x AA 16x AF and it was soooo beautiful, but of course I was getting less than 15 fps and any with action it went down to 2-3 fps!

I totally turned off the sound in the UT2004.ini file and that gave me a jump of about 7-10 fps, but of course it's no fun to play without sound.

I think even the best systems choke a little on this game.

I am sure that if the eye candy is turned down a bit, that it would play.
You just have to download the demo and find out.

It's pretty obvious that the iBooks gaming capabilities are limited by the radeon 9200. A 1.2GHz iBook should, however, run Warcraft 3 flawlessly.

personally, I wonder why they make games that are so demanding that basically no one can play them at the time they are released. These developers think that just because they can, they should... but good lord, even the Radeon 9800 is crippled by this game. Maybe they've overdone it a bit for the time being?

I found the two games to be quite different in style of play... The balances are quite different.

2003: much less forgiving for "lone gunmen" even when playing a team based game type

2004: go it alone and you will be picked off... unless you are super good.

So what newer, graphics-intensive games _aren't_ so demanding, that will play well on most better systems? UT2K4 obviously isn't efficient, and I've heard mixed reviews of Halo... wait for WoW?

The MoH demo looked alright on my new 12" PB. Is the release any smoother?

well, I am playing C&C Generals on my 12" powerbook, and the specs aren't as good as your iBook. It plays fine for me, but before people get upset with me, I have no idea to find out what fps I am getting and I'll bet they aren't great. But it is playable. But I have the detail on low and resolution at 800x600. It is much nicer on my TiBook, but it needs some work at the moment, so I have to play it on this while I am away from my Powermac. MoH plays really well on this 'book so it should play even better on yours, as my video card sucks. These are really the only two games I play alot, so I can't help you out much more. But maybe this will help a little.
