I just received my refurbished TiBook 867 DVI and it seems that the case, near the battery is separating. The light silver part is fine, but the dark silver in that corner is pulling away. This does not affect the function of the machine at all. I took the bottom case off, adjusted the Airport card and cable, just in case they were inhibiting the case from closing properly. However, the problem still persists. I am including this link to the problem. Please, if anyone can help, let me know! Should I even bother calling Apple? The computer is from CompUSA and is a refurb purchased 03/25/04. Let me know.

I just disassembled the machine, again. When I started, I was looking to see if the plastic rim around the battery was loose and needed to be rebonded to the metal (heard it was a problem with others.) It was fine. However, I noticed what looked like burns or broken pieces on the light silver area of the computer. On closer inspection, I noticed that the black areas were more like gobs of something. I have no idea what they were gobs of, but they were impervious to water and took much scrubbing to reduce to simple black lines. It looks to me as if they originate inside of the bottom case plate on the corner that I am experiencing the separation in. Putting the case back together, things seem better, but for how long? If it is some sort of adhesive or lubricant (silicone) what can I expect it to do? Seep? What will clean it off the best? Where did it come from?

Call Apple. It's under warranty. Have them fix it.

bah, I think it's what Apple uses to fix laptops, prolly grease to fit the bottoms on easier. Because when I got my Powerbook back from apple it was all over my powerbook. I should have taken pictures, but I cleaned it up before I even booted up. There's still a bit of "unreachable" grease on the hinges though. When I got my powerbook back from Applecare, it also was "separating" and making a squeaking near the battery. I unscrewed the bottom and resat it and now it doesn't squeak. Still feels weak around the battery though.

It seems more like grease everytime I think about it. Does anyone know if Apple uses any kind of thermal transfer grease near the battery?
