View Full Version : Getting Windows XP..

I'm confused about which version of Windows XP home I would need to run under bootcamp. Reading the forums, everyone says just buy the OEM version like:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116511
but one of the reviews on newegg says:
"Cons: Be sure to read MICROSOFT's definition of "System Builder" before you order this software! If you are building a PC for your own use, you are not a "System Builder" and must return the software to your distributor. Unfortunately Newegg will not accept unopened OEM software and you are out the purchase price!
Other Thoughts: Also you will need Microsoft's OPK (OEM Preinstallation Kit) to install the software. Unfortunately an OPK is only included in a 3-pack of Windows XP not in the individual package."
but other reviews don't mention this at all. i'd hate to have to pay $180 for the full retail version. Can someone comment? thanks.

You can use the OEM edition on any system that is either new or has changed significantly - new system board for example.
You don't need the OPK to use the OEM edition.
Update: I just re-read Bob's review on newegg - you can pretty much ignore all of that.

I believe it's any version of xp that has SP2 installed as part of the OS. which is where I'm running into problems, I have xp pro install disks but it's pre-sp2 so I'm not sure what to do.

You need to find yourself a PC with a CD burner and slipstream SP2 onto a new install disk.

This is for old-wiz and myfirstmacbook! The rule with installing windows via bootcamp on any mac is:
1. For Windows XP: it has to be a legal xp install disk, no pirated copys sorry boys  and most importantly it has to be an install disk with SP 2 i repeat again it has to have SP 2 no pre-SP 2 sorry boys:(
2 For Windows Vista: no illegal pirated copys, and any vista will work
3. Ur Mac :apple: must meet the system requirements of the windows you are planning to install
