Yup, 90 from the Music Store (8 from the Pepsi promotion, none of those from an actual Pepsi, all from Big Gulps filled with Coca-Cola products.) 2527 from my CD collection. (That is my entire CD collection.) 10.01GB.
I'm slowly digitizing my cassettes and importing my MiniDiscs. Unfortunately, I don't have a record player, but that's not a huge loss, as my two vinyls are 'Ghostbusters' and 'A-ha' (Ah, nostalgia from the early '80s. I've owned them since they were brand new.) But none of those have been added to the library yet. (I'm still testing importing methods.)
I should be getting a friend's 30GB iPod soon. He just broke the 30GB barrier, and will either be getting a 40GB iPod, or an iPod mini. (His reasoning is that if he's going to be choosing just a subset, he might as well HAVE to make good choices, rather than just omitting one or two things. Or he'll just go for enough to hold it all.) Even when my tapes and MiniDiscs are imported, I'll still be well short of 15GB. But I still haven't fully decided on if I want a mini or not. If I do decide to go for my friend's 30Giger, he'll sell it to me for the price of a new 15GB. (He has kept his in pristine condition, the metal back is absolutely flawless, not a single scratch.) And he'll throw in an iTrip and a Belkin Voice Recorder for only an extra $50. I don't think I want those, though. (I already have an FM transmitter, and I don't think I need a voice recorder.)

About 60,000.. but I figure a good 10,000 are duplicates.. of those I suspect I actually care to have 12,000-15,000. When I get time I will delete the ones I know I will never listen to. One of the other techs made it a practice to copy every MP3 off of every computer that came into the shop. Before I left, (long after he had left) I bought the 200gig drive they were stored on... it has about 10 gig free on it. I'm trying to decide how I feel about having them at all, with their dubious origins, but at the moment, that's how many I have. On my drive, from my CD's, (plus the whole 2 songs I bought from the ITMS) I have 7,500. (all of which are duplicated on the 200gig drive, and included in the 60K number)

I have lots of classical tracks which are more than 10 minutes long, and some short pieces lasting only 1 or 2 minutes. So the number of songs may not be that indicative, but the total duration do.
Also, ipod is much more than a mere MP3 player, it is a hard disk, photo storage .......

I've got 27,721
I'd say about a 1/4 came from a friend who gave them to me when Mp3's were pretty new - I remember getting MacAMP 1.0 and him giving me over 500 songs - then I moved on to Soundjam (what iTunes was) about 2 years later and we shared another 2500 or so. Over the course of the next few years we shared more, then iTunes was released.
I'd say another 1/4 comes from ripped CDs
Another 1/4 comes from legal downloads iTMS (mainly)
I'd say an 1/8 come from Limewire
Another 1/8 come from Library CDs that I have "checked out"
There's also a number of live recording s and DVD Video rips like oompa loompa songs from Willy Wonka

6792 songs
3403 AAC (50.1%)
3383 mp3 (49.8%)
122 from the itms (1.8%)
i STILL haven't finished ripping all my classical cds. i've been trying for years, but the tags are almost always screwed up and so it takes so much time to do them. i've had a stack sitting on my desk since february. but i only have about 50 left to do at this point so i'll finish after the semester is over. the itms number might have been higher except i only use it to try out new artists and a bit of classical. if there's a cd coming out from an artist i like, i'm always going to go buy the cd. just how it goes.

I've been hovering around 19,000 for a while.
A few are dups.
maybe a 1,000 are audio books which quite a few of them are broken up into smaller tracks. Wasn't the max something like 150,000?
Most are from my own and my wife life time CD collection.
Most of the rest are from friends collections when it was cool to ask to "tape it" before most people even knew WTF an MP3 was. So there is the bulk there.
Another huge chunk is from Stream Ripper, supposedly some of you guys are finally catching on to this.
Another chunk are MP3s from friends collections not downloaded (is this considered ilegal?).
I love iTMS but don't spend a ton of dough there. I think I had a dozen or so Pepsi caps!
You gotta love Limewire for hard to find stuff.
Also, I think more than 50% of the collection I could lose and not care, I would never have bought the CD anyway.

I made a smart playlist in iTunes of songs I hadn't yet listened to. The count is about 5,200, or about half my collection.
This means I have more unheard songs on my computer than most people have on their computer.
What's dumber is that now, lately, I'm listening to the "Never Played" playlist for the lone purpose of clearing a song off the playlist, because having that many songs unlistened to on my computer, I think, shows some sort of compulsive mania to collect songs; so, since I'm not nuts, really, I want to get it out of the Never Played list in order to prove that I'm not obsessed with getting new music.
I think I need help! :)

i have a similar situation. i'm going through listening to songs that i want to get sucked into my smart playlist mechanism for possible inclusion on my ipod. i have unplayed songs excluded from that mechanism because i have this ocean of classical music that i enjoy but don't necessarily want on my ipod and most of it is still unplayed as i only ripped it relatively recently.
oh yeah, and i also have a large number of unplayed songs that used to have high playcounts but they got reset last year when i reorganised where i kept stuff on my hard drives.

Current iTunes library on my iBook is 1427 songs, 14.1 days, 17.04 GB. Many of those are on a Firewire drive, and others on the Firewire drive aren't in this library. Plus I have a tracks on an old Sun workstation.
Anyone have recommendations how to best manage tracks that are originally saved on one volume (e.g. iBook, outside the iTunes Music folder), archived to another (e.g. Firewire drive), then some removed from the original volume and some copied from the other as needed? Obviously the library gets confused when it can't find tracks in their original locations and it's far too much trouble manually changing to their new location. And dragging an updated folder onto iTunes won't work as desired (and messes up original Date Added info). So, I'm looking for some way to copy tracks between volumes *and* preserve the integrity of the iTunes library. Even with multiple libraries it's not clear what strategy to use. I haven't found any clear explanation how to do such a thing. TIA for any advice or references!
Once I get a desktop Mac I'll merge all tracks into one master library and clean that up, then keep a subset of it on my iBook.

I'm in the neighbourhood of 3200 songs, give or take, which consume about 13 gigs of my iPod's 30 gig drive. I have quite a few duplicates, and more than my fair share of mis-tagged ones from my pre-iTunes days. I keep saying one of these days I'm going to go through my entire collection and clean it up/ update ID3 tags. Maybe it'll be a good summer project.
I've only managed to rip about half of my CD collection, and while I do admit to being an occassional pirate, I'm cleaning up my act. Once ITMS hits Canada I plan to eschew CDs forever.

I got a $1000 gift certificate from [most] all of my clients (and client employees) pitching in $2 this past Christmas. I was also given about 240 iTunes Music Store Pepsi caps. I've bought $111 from the iTunes store, the rest come from free use Mp3's or legal [free] websites on the net. I don't know off the top of my head, but I have been given a song or two from buymusic.com and from Napster 2.0. I've just put them in from an iPaq and brought the music into my Mac via sound in and converted them to MP3's.
I would say the actual total is about $5000 by these means.
Take into account that not everything I have is music - there is spoken word, movie quotes, themes .... heck... I even have the sounds downloaded from the Nintendo and Sony websites for game soundtracks. Celtic Moon from Final Fantasy is beautiful and Wario saying, "Ima a Wario I'ma gonaa win!"

I think it's too late for CDs to "go the way of the 8-track." The 8-track was a brief fad in the '70s and was never the dominant mode of music distribution. CDs have already lasted two decades and continue to dominate the (legal) music market. Even if they cease to be the preferred format, there will need to be CD players produced for at least another 50 years, just so people can play their old music (just like vinyl record players are still produced today).

Now, I am recording my tapes on to HD where I can not find the CD, don't really care to buy the CD/download. Still have some albums that I would like to burn to the HD but I have to find a cheap ass stereo player (turn table) that has RCA out.

I see your point but what I was originally trying to say was that they'll probably become something of a novelty (regardless of the popularity lifespan), even more so than the comparison that you made of LP's. People still buy LP's not only because somethings just aren't available in digital format but also LP's have a distinct aural quality that many people enjoy over the relatively "clean" sound of a CD. With a compact disc there is no professionally distrubuted material that is exclusive to that format and the the sound quality is hardly unique, in fact, its best attribute, the ability to lend a certain purity to the sound, can even be "improved" upon.

Woo, I've broken 1700! Tanks in part to redeeming my 25 free songs, and the one from the iTunes anniversary. (Courtney Love on Friday?! WTF?!)

Thanks to the Pepsi iTunes and one free song I now have 22 songs. I downloaded 13 songs from "The Passions of Christ," and the rest are John Williams.

~11,500. That's over 33 days of music. :D
I only listen to about 500 though, that's why I got an iPod mini. The other 11,000 are just for show. :D

I have 3200 songs and my iTunes library makes an extensive list. It's never failed to astound non-mac users. :)
