So i just ordered a custom birch kit from Spaun(!!!), and will probably be looking to sell my Tama starclassic sometime soon.
I was wondering if anyone here was interested in drums that much and knows about Spaun Drum Company (www.spaundrums.com).
Birch 8 ply, with a walnut satin finish.
18x22 - kick
9x12 - rack
12x14 - floor
6x14 solid stave snare. Walnut with Maple stripes.

I didn't go with Spaun based on "styles" (which btw, are custom and %100 up to what you want), but rather because of how they make the drums, and there for, sound. A few things they do different from most other companies:
-Double 45 degree bearing edges
-Solid brass lugs
-Consistent shell thicknesses across the kit
-No reinforcement rings
I'm also pretty sure Mapex doesn't make Solid stave snares.
Now none of that is to say Mapex doesn't have good drums, but I'd rather not choose my drums over colors.
My band plays acoustic, folk type music (link) (www.watching-cars.com). But i also play a lot of independent gigs.

Spaun's drums are pretty nice, but I prefer the looks of a nice SJC kit over Spaun's kits, but they're pretty much the same in the end, most custom kits just use Keller's shells, so it's up to your opinion on the looks.

Ya, Spaun does use keller shells, but like said above, there a few more things that they do that affects the sound.
And the only thing i see different visually in SJC is the lugs. The rest of it (paint and all) just seems like they might have more creative customers. (but they do look very nice)

Drumjim- Spaun makes great kits for sure. You surely will not be disappointed. And a solid stave snare... that will be sweet! Mapex, like many other companies, may "look" cool, but are so mass produced (especially on the low to mid-grade kits). IMHO, there are such good things about almost every REAL custom drum company, it's hard to say if one is so much better than another (I am talking about Spaun, Risen, SJC, Truth, Shine, C&C, etc. and NOT DW, OCDP, Pearl...)
I am endorsed by Risen Drums (http://www.risendrums.com) and just ordered my 2nd custom kit. Great stuff if you haven't checked them out yet!

How did we go from talking about Custom drums (thanks samwells and apsterling) to talking about mass production run drums?

Beats me. My next kit's gonna be an SJC, I think- probably 20x20 kick, 14x12 floor tom and a 13x6.5 snare. I don't use my rack too much and my current kick, while amazing, is quite a bit too big.Though my kit, if I recall correctly is Keller shells despite being a production kit. (Pacific CXR)

Your kick is too big (probably a 22) but you're going to get it 20" deep?
I don't use my rack for live stuff with the band, but i like to have it as an option for recording or other gigs.

I recorded a dude with a spaun kit. I remember the toms sounded great.
I still have sampled tom hits from the session.

I don't I'm sorry. It was like a emerald green to black fade stain and I'm pretty sure it was a matte finish. Does that narrow things down at all?

ha, no, not at all :D
Unless it was one of these kits (exactly)
The left one being Birch and the right Maple.

Of those 2 it was definitely the kit on the right. I remember the big wooden hoops.

Nope- my kick is 24"x18"
I feel that a 20"x20" is a good compromise between complete and utter bass sound like I've got now, and the ability to actually move the drum.
And most 14" toms I've played can be tuned like a 16" so save the money and two inches in the process.
