Got Burned. Illustrator file imported into Indesign

I imported an Illustrator file into Indesign. I didn't get any font errors, but the Illustrator file was missing a font. You would get an error if you opened it in Illustrator, but not when it links up in Indesign...any way to detect this in the future?

I have been a lurker for quite a while, but just opened an account.

Not sure why it didn't detect it but for any illustrator work that I import into indesign (which is usually a logo or text-art) I convert it to outlines first. Is there any reason in particular you're using illustrator for regular type? Do you need it to be editable in indesign?

The illustrator file was actually a map and the type was road names that were in the "interstate shields"...they ended up not centering in the shield, so we knew something wasn't right. We went to illustrator and opened the link there and it errored out. So we wouldn't have known without opening up in Indesign. I would think if you have font issues in any of the CS4 programs, that you would get an error even if the font is missing in one of the other CS4 programs.

Best to always print a proof to check. Also, like the other poster said, make the text outlines. I'd keep two versions (with & without outlines) – in case you need to edit the text again later.

...or just keep text version on separate non-visible, non-printing layer.
