Does anyone know if this used the

128MB Graphics card

&

5400 rpm drive?

Great! PowerBooks are faster :) And even better... not TOO much faster than the one I just bought :)

I'll be more interested to see how the new iBooks handle gaming.

(I believe they said they plan to test a 128 MB version later. And they've already benchmarked the drive rpm on current PowerBooks, if you want to isolate that factor.)

Anyone know how these compare to top of the range Wintel notebooks?

Just got told by Barefeats that it was the 4200 and the 64MB graphics card, so I look forward to seeing some speed bumps ahead when they get their hands on the latest upgrades...

They probably don't compare very well to wintel notebooks....

well that was uninformative. i would have rather seen xbench numbers, or at least compare the pbook to the 1.6ghz g5... telling me that a dual proc system will do better with multi proc aware apps is stupid.

Depends on the test and the circumstances, really, not to mention the laptop you're going against.

Makes me think about holding out for a g5 powerbook. Of course, these new pb's were tested against dual powermac g5's, so I wouldn't expect the numbers to even be close.

Well it could be Jan 05'..sooner...later...

See how barefeats do when they run a PBG41.5 with both 128VRAM and 5400rpm drive

Yes I agree that will be very intresting!

I wonder if the 128 VRAM will have better frame rate in Halo & on other programs?

Holy ****! Screw portability, I want a dual 2 G5, not the Rev. A 15 inch Aluminum PowerBook!! Damn that's FAST!

for only $50 you can double the VRAM to 128, which is the test i'm looking forward to seeing the most...

Whoa...that G5 is hella fast.

The increased video ram will just barely give you better framerates in anything but the newest craziest games that shouldn't be played on a laptop anyway.

And with a 5400rpmb hdd to see all up what it can really do...

what's interesting to me is that your score of 87 is MUCH less than the ~100pt scores of the 1ghz g4 books. so what did you do to screw it up so much? or is it just fake?

Yeah, just one small set of tests, but it agrees with what we've seen before-- the G5 isn't that much faster clock for clock except in the most memory intensive applications.

Hopefully the folks whining about no PBG5's will at least look at these numbers-- the G5 doesn't give much advantage at all... Factor in two CPUs and the clock speed difference and it's pretty much a wash on the tests that aren't dependent on the GPU.

An all of this is in an enclosure with no holds barred. Compromise it for a laptop and the G4 will probably be the better CPU. If there really is a dual-core G4 out there, it looks like it might be a much better choice than a single G5 with a slower clock and bus.

It's pretty clear the most exciting things about the G5 are the deeper memory and the roadmap.

Xbench is notoriously unreliable. You need to run it a statistically significant number of times, and even then I wouldn't trust it much.
