BEWARE: iPhone 3.0 beta 3 just deleted 10 years worth of personal email :(

Guess they dont call it beta for nothing.

iPhone email seems to have somehow deleted 10 years worth of my personal email from my Yahoo account.

Fortunately I have a POP3 backup, but hell knows how I will restore it my Yahoo account 🙁

Oh come now. Don't just be gratuitously nasty.
Some of us like keeping them around… In fact if I rummage around I'll be able to come up with emails circa 1992 printed from Pine. Yes, Pine.

My mail app (in Leopard, not iPhone), deleted all my Gmail emails since I opened the account... And since it's setup as IMAP, it deleted everything off the GMAIL server.

I was able to restore some email but not all unfortunately.

I know, yeah? They're so small, what possible benefit could I get from erasing them?

I can think of one or two times I've needed to go back and look something up from 4 or 5 years ago, but I can't think of a single time that having that 4 extra GB of space would have made a difference.

Just checked, mine go back to November, 2001.
 
Can you set up an IMAP inbox and then move your mail (copy) over to it? That should put it back up on the Yahoo servers.
 
Sorry for the loss. If you can remember what you were doing when it happened, you should let Apple know about this bug.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be nasty. I wasn't being a horrible bitch - just genuinely shocked that someone had e-mails going back 10 years.

If they were sentimental I could understand. Sorry for the loss? 😱
 
Perhaps I am bit older than the rest of you whipper snappers and have had a web mail account since it was invented 😉

Unrelated to beta 3.0, but check out Mail Steward. It copies all of your emails from multiple accounts into a searchable database, attachements and all. Works fantastic. I believe it can push them back if they've been deleted as well. I found out about it on this forum last year, and have been using it since.

Every few months or so I'll purge through email I no longer need...
I didn't start doing this until recently though and found email from when I opened my gmail account (when gmail started.. forget when this was.).
 
Every few months I go and archive my old email to my computer (which then gets backed up). Why keep them on the server? That's just an accident waiting to happen.
 
Nothing wrong with email from 10 years ago...

I've got a load still from 1997 so I guess that's 12 years now 🙂
 
Sounds like USER did not set the proper settings thus deleted emails.

You do know that you can loose webmail forever if the service shut down?
That's a good reason to have backup.

In addition, you DO know the definition of BETA?
 
Slightly similar situation, maybe someone can help.

I just set up my .mac email on outlook as IMAP and it deleted all of my past email. Can someone explain to me why this happened, and if there is any way of recovering it?

I'm pretty sure Mail on the iPhone even in the 3.0 Beta wouldn't just up and delete 10 years worth of email without some type of user error.

How did you have your Yahoo account setup? POP3? IMAP?

What were you doing at the time to make you suspect that Mail on the iPhone was responsible?

Sure a beta is going to be buggy but I can't see any bug slipping through that just accidentally wipes an entire email account off of a server, I don't think there is even that functionality in the iPhone Mail app unless maybe you use POP3 and download all emails off of the server without keeping a copy. 😕
