imovie not recognizing my JVC cam via USB

Hello mac vets, just switched to MAC and love it! one problem though, imovie is not recognizing my JVC GR-D290U camcorder. I am using USB which by my instruction manual should work. Are there drivers on MAC or will it only work with 4 to 6 pin fire wire. I have a new desktop IMAC 24in OS X10.5.
