The difference is that being Black, Asian, Jewish, Muslim, disabled, overweight, nerdy, dumb etc, are all things that are either not chosen by the parents, or develop independent of the parents.

If a gay couple adopts, they are potentially choosing a childhood full of torment for the child, and I also don't know if that's fair.
That notion is not at all supported by research.

That being said, I'm still supportive of gay couples being able to adopt.

SLC
So, if one of these kids asked you why their parents weren't allowed to be married, what would you tell them? It feels like a normal family to them.

Yes the religions are chosen, but the ethnicities aren't. I was assuming that you were referring to the Jewish or Arabic ethnicity there.

SLC

True, ethnicitys aren't chosen, but I could imagine some kids taking heat for their religious beliefs, especially Muslims.

I had an overweight parent, never got teased once about it. And my neighbor was adopted by a latino couple with heavily portuguese accents. Nobody thought they were anything but cool.

Let's be honest and acknowledge that as far as middle schoolers are concerned, being adopted by a homosexual couple and being adopted by a brasilian couple are not the same thing.

SLC

There are people on these very forums who are being raised by same sex couples. I think you'll find that most people think the parents of these forum members are "cool". And again- to fault victims of prejudice for other people's ignorance is faulty.

One hardly needs gay parents to be accused of being gay in junior high school. Or to be gay, for that matter. One only needs to be in junior high school.

So- you think people should be denied rights just because of other people's prejudices?
nope. that's an example of something the gay movement makes up so they can point and call us bigots.

No one decides to be gay.

True, but everyone decides to get married. Everyone decides to have children. Everyone decides what to teach their children. And we decided to protect our way of life.

choolers are concerned, being adopted by a homosexual couple and being adopted by a brasilian couple are not the same thing.

I'm not interested in speculating what middle school children think about gay or brasilian adoptive parents.

Is your point that potential gay adoptive parents should consider not adopting children due to their homosexuality and what middle schoolers might think about it? Are the gay parents being unfair to the child by making the decision to adopt? How will society move forward if we don't directly confront bigotry?

I would say that what is most unfair in this situation is that the children who would engage in tormenting are being treated unfairly by being subjected to bigoted attitudes in the first place.

We didn't make it up. You do it. You just did it in the above sentence.

True, but everyone decides to get married. Everyone decides to have children. Everyone decides what to teach their children. And we decided to protect our way of life.

Why do you get to teach your kids what you want, but no one else does? And exactly how does gay people getting married harm your "way of life"? It doesn't. You can still do what you want, while we cannot. And that's exactly the way you like it- keep the homos in their place. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Are you going to actually counter any of the responses to your posts?

Of course not. Why would he do that?

Would it matter if he did? It's just the same five people in every thread that deals with homosexuality, calling others bigots, gay haters, right wing ignorants, and degrading them because they don't share the same views.

50 years ago, someone would've said the same thing about a child raised by one black and one white parent. Now, a large majority of the population would look back at such a statement and would call whoever said that a bigot. You may not think you're a bigot now, but in 50 years, a majority of the population would look back at your statement and would call you a bigot.

Lee, Gary, myself and others are 50 years ahead of the times.

The only tragedy here is that you're willing to make categorical judgements against my family without ever having known any of us, and that you are completely unable or unwilling to address my previous challenge by supporting your point of view with real evidence.

That is the dictionary definition of bigotry.

What would you say to someone who denied you your rights? Because what you're saying is that we should just sit down and shut up, go back to our closets and expect to be treated as less. On top of that, you think we should be OK with that.

Sorry, I'm going to fight it.

No one person here is denying you ANYTHING, other than the satisfaction of staying quiet about their thoughts. Because religious beliefs mean nothing to you and are so easily dismissed, of course you believe you are correct indefinitely. I respect that you have a differing opinion than I, and it is your prerogative. I just cannot understand why my differing opinion should be afforded less respect by yourself and others, whether or not you agree.

How are Lee's rights not being denied? He can't get married to his partner. Sounds like a denial of rights to me.

Your opinion has no basis in reality and cannot be backed up. Therefore, it gets no respect. All the research, all the the real world evidence doesn't support any arguments against equal marriage rights- religious or otherwise.

And sorry, but stevento is working quite actively to deny us equal rights. He's a member of an organization that exists for that very purpose.

Of course not. Stevento is just calling the idea that a couple of the same sex would want to raise kids or help out some kids stuck in an orphanage by adopting them a "travesty" while posting links to an organisation he supports that is attempting to ensure gays cannot get married. Nothing wrong going on here...move on, please.

Again, you misinterpret my post. I can respect that you have a different opinion, without saying I agree with it. You should respect the fact not everyone will agree with you. And that what is easily dismissed by you as fiction may not be to others.

If it can't be proven, it shouldn't be used to make laws against other people. If you choose to believe in a god, fine. But I should not be denied rights because of your belief. That is why I don't respect your opinion.

Respect is merit-based. Demanding equivalence between unequal ideas and positions is precisely why "they" are being "degraded" for not sharing the same views. Additionally, a secular society that abolishes all traditions and laws that respects an establishment of religion while simultaneously upholding the free exercise thereof creates a society that enjoys the highest amount of religious freedom for everyone.

SLC

Considering the state of adoption in the United States, it behooves us to honestly acknowledge that most of these kids would like to have a home at all.

I am of an Asian ethnicity, and have white gay parents. (I was adopted, obviously)

In middle school, I was teased because I wasn't white like them, not because of their sexual orientation, and yes, they were open about it and so was I.
