I just got a new SUV with a tow hitch on it. What kind of crap can I tow with it?

Depends on what the hitch -- and your vehicle -- are rated for. Bumper mounted hitches can't haul as much as a tow bar. IIRC, bumper mounted hitches are Class II and can haul up to 1500lbs. Tow bars go up from there, with the typical Class III capable of 5000lbs. But make sure your SUV has a tow package before you go hauling that kind of weight around. If it's new, you should be able to tell pretty easily. If it's a used SUV you need to check it out. The previous owner could have installed a Class III hitch, but not the rest of the towing package.

What about if I hooked a red Radioflyer wagon to the hitch and put a scarecrow in the wagon?

That would be illegal to tow onto the street.

My vehicle has the towing package, I was working under the assumption that it could tow 6,000 lbs since that's what the tow bar says. Turns out that it's just the tow bar that's rated for 6,000 lbs. I've got an 07 pathfinder, good engine, but I've got the 4 liter 6 cylinder model, it's the V8 model that's made to handle 6,000 lbs.

Luckily, all I've got to tow is a tent trailer which weighs under 1,500 lbs.

I towed my daughter's converted 13 tonne GVW horsebox. That was exciting.

That must have been fun, specially when those horses shift position.

The worst thing I've been involved in towing was a 15,000 lb combined trailer/load of flagstone. Oh yea! :p

I wish to use my SUV. Get all the money out of it. It has a hitch. It is my desire to use the hitch, but I don't have anything to tow. It is my issue. I cannot tow a boat, I don't have a boat.

Can I tow another car?

So if you didn't have anything to tow, why did you buy A) A SUV B) A SUV with the tow package and buy a hitch?

And BTW, I am still having a hard time taking you seriously since you asked if you could tow a bear.....

Can I tow another car?You can tow anything you like: a car (though you don't need a tow hitch to do that), a caravan, a trailer, a burger stand, a boat on a trailer, a howitzer, an anti-aircraft battery, a carnival float, a manure spreader, a baler, a disc harrow, a horsebox. What a damned silly question. Why didn't you ask yourself this before you bought the SUV?

Thank you for the advice! I think I will now tow a burger stand and a carnival float. Where do I buy?
