View Full Version : Do you have a big dock?

I was just curious as to the size of you everyone's dock. I like to change my around. Sometimes I pack it full of software, (in an effort to look like I have alot of important stuff) and other times I like to clean it out, and just keep the important stuff in there. I also like to keep my dock fairly small.
How about you?

Mine's bigger, oh wait, you said dock, nm.
I generally keep mine tidy and fit. I just leave apps open since they don't really take up any CPU time in the background. So my Dock contains frequently used apps and then 15-20 running applications.

You know, I had to read this thread title 3 or 4 times just to make sure what exactly it was about... ;)
So, in answer to the question, no, not very big. 27 icons inc. finder & trash.

my dock is hidden most of time; usually it's very small, but when you point to what you want, it gets very very big.

I like to keep my dock pretty small ( that has ABSOLUTLY no relation to the other kind of dock  ;) ). Just Safari, iTunes, LimeWire, M$ Word, Appleworks, Mail, iChat, Photoshp CS, Terminal, TextEdit, Calculator, system prefs (+ F and T).

17 items in mine (including finder and trash). things are grouped from left to right by type and frequency of use (i like to have as many open apps grouped together as possible).
used to keep the size quite small, but since i started using adium i keep it bigger so i can read the text bubbles on the icon (also, the duck is just so darn cute...).

Mine generally has 18-20 icons including Finder and Trash and whatever extra program or two I may be running that isn't already a part of the dock. I also keep the size of the dock around the low-mid range and put magnification on just slightly so I get some feedback when navigating. Overall, I like keeping the desktop clean and uncluttered.

I got 13 items in the Dock, plus the application folder. I needed to reorganize my app folder so I put a number of folders in there: Accesoires/tools, Games, Media Players and a Folder called 'Dock'! Most of the apps in the Dock are in this folder. So when I right-click the App folder it really is tidy. :)

not bad at all. having that many would only slow things down if you had hide the dock on. even then it wouldn't make much of a difference. I myself keep the icons smaller, have magnification off and also have animate icons off. with things set like this the dock won't hinder your system at all.

22 icons in mine. They're all apps that I use frequently and usually make new documents with (as opposed to opening saved files, which I'll go manually find and open). I have them grouped according to function/type: Internet (Mail, Safari, etc), System (System prefs, Terminal), Word Processing (Word, Text Edit), Games, Creative (Photoshop, iApps).

This is rather sad, 26 icons on my dock, and that has been slimmer down from even more! Whats even sadder is that I use 3/4's of the icons every day!

I've got 22 icons regularly, but one of them is a folder with the icon below. In this folder are my 25 "second-tier applications", the ones that don't deserve their own dock icon.

a boy was driving his car after he got his license and he naturally drove too fast, and unfortunatley, crashed into a ditch and got injured badly
when he was rushed into the local er, one of the attending doctors replied, "i can't help him...he's my son and i am afraid i won't do the best job...send him to the doctor in the next room!"
when the boy was in the next er room, another doctor came in and said, "i can't work on this boy, he's my son...take him to the next room!"

Anyway, my dock has 23 icons but it looks a bit boring in comparison to some of the others:

I use Quicksilver as my app launcher, I've found it to be much more efficient than the dock.

I have a dock that is 19 long!
I know there is a way to adjust the magnification of your dock...some of you might want to experement with this if you feel your dock is too small. :D
But beware, this magnification happens when moving a mouse over your dock. This is illegal in most states (NH is probably one where it would be legal- "Live free or die" ya know!.

how do i get it to show the thumbnail, not just the name? does it have to be on the web to do that?No it doesn't have to be on the web. I think it shows the filename because you are attaching a pdf file rather than an image file such as a jpeg or gif or png. If you have a pdf file created by doing a screen capture, double-click it to open it in Preview, then use the Export menu choice and save it as a jpeg file. Then attach that file to your post instead of the pdf.

I saw a few docks with FCP, DVDSP, Adobe CS, Office X Pro, ProTools and Logic ALL on the same machine. Is there a place on the web where you can download the Mac OS X icons of well-known applications? Is it legally ok to have them if you don't own the application? I can imagine some legit, some silly, and some sneaky (April Fool-type) uses for them.

My (left side) dock only has 11 items (well 12 in the attached photo cuz snap-n-drag is on there), but one of them is a "favorites" folder I use by right-clicking. The only things I keep in my dock are the items I use every day.
Of course with Launchbar I may get rid of "favorites" altogether.
I don't quite understand having 20-30 or more apps in your dock, any more than I understand PC people that have their desktop covered with program shortcuts. Doesn't it pretty much defeat the purpose?

Mine's gotten a little shorter now that I use Quicksilver, but I never kept it very long because I like the icons to be large enough to read the unread email number and because I put it on the side, which has a smaller dimension.

I keep my dock pretty small.
A great tip for those who don't already know. Place your Applications folder in the dock. Then when you want to start an App, either Right Click (fastest) or click and hold and up pops a listing of the folder. Select your app and go!
This way you don't need 500 icons in your dock.

I only need to do that on any regular basis with Photoshop, so it's in my dock. For those rarer occasions when I need to open a file in another specific app I just right click on it and go to "Open With."

Another method if you have Panther: Instead of having Mozilla in your dock, you might choose to put an alias of it on your desktop. Then, using Exposé, you can hide any open windows while you drag a file to that Mozilla icon. Having more icons on your desktop is a little more cluttered, of course, but it keeps the dock smaller if you care about that.
