Did smcFanControl mess up my fan?

I noticed that my macbook was getting getting very hot every now and then, so I installed smcFanControl, and set it up, so that it would run at 1800 when it was on battery power, 2400 when it was plugged in, and 3500 for when i was making heavy use of it.

Now, two days later, im hearing this weird sound when ever the fan reaches 1900rpm, and im really worried that i might have screwed up the fan. The macbook its only 2 months old, so the fan is practically new.

How did you make smcFanControl let you go all the way down to 1800 rpm? That's not allowed by the software itself. The application even gives you a warning about this.

Did you read it? Guessing not. In any case, you may have unwillingly killed your own fan. Fan is supposed to run at a minimum of 2000 rpm. Also, running your fan at such a slow speed may have over heated something.

Macbooks default speed is 1800rpm. My Macbook is also at 1800rpm and I have used this app on every mac that I have had with no problems. I would uninstall it and take it to your Apple store. I am sure that it was not caused by smc but I would uninstall it and bring it in.

What model macbook are you running? My 2.0 unibody defaults and never goes under 1999/2000 RPM

I have the one with the aluminum body. What's weird is that i hear a grinding noise when its running from 1900 to 2600 or so... But if its running at a speed lower than 1900 or higher than 2600 then it stops. :confused:

I have the same problem (fan noise) and took it to the Apple Store. They said that fans were on backorder. I'm beginning to think it is a common problem.

Huh, installed newest version of SMCFanControl and the fan is now reading as 1800RPM

what is the highest speed that is recommended? i mean i dont wanna overwork the fan and shorten the lifespan

also, where is the air intake vent? i can feel air coming out just below the screen at the hinge area, but where does the macbook take in air from?

iStat on my 5 day old 2.4GHz unibody MacBook says 1999 rpm.

It does have 4GB of RAM. Wonder if that explains why some are at 1800 rpm and why some read 2000..

My fan is making all sorts of noise. Quite annoying. I was going to take it to an Apple Store, but if they are on backorder, I won't bother.
