So I was sitting in the computer lab at our school, our class was writing a report on The Odyssey. Since our shcool does not have much spare money (what school does?) We are using pretty old PCs (the few iMacs we have run 8.6), I didn't get a chance to rip apart one of the towers to tell what kind of processor it had and all the hardware stuff, but the OS was win 95. So this kid next to me starts yelling his head off that the word processing app, Star Office, won't launch. So I try to do some trouble shooting before one of the lab guys comes over and starts yelling at him.

Me: did you click on the icon?
Him: yes
Me: did you double click?
Him: yes
Me: do it again
(short pause)
Him: this thing is so ****ing slow
(The app still isn't launching. So I grab hold of the mouse and click on the Start button, and it pops right up so I know it's not frozen)
Me: well, I can't hear the tower making any noise, so the app isn't loading up
Him: what the he** is a tower?
(I point to the big box next to the monitor)
Him: that's not a ****ing tower! It's a modem!
Me: the modem goes into the tower, but the whole big box thing is called a tower.
Him: no it's not!
(so he yells to the kid sitting in front of him)
Him: hay Dave! Whats this big box called!
Dave: it's called a CPU
(the kid sitting next to Dave jumps)
Other kid: it's called a disk drive, not a CPU!
(so all 3 argue about the topic for the last 10 min of class)

*sigh*

Even in theis day and age you think people would be more informed about computers. These kids are the same people who say, ''well the e-mail said I had a virus and if I downloaded the file it would fix my computer!''

Moral of the day:

Mom: so what did you learn at school today Daniel?
Me: my English teacher thinks that broadband is only for porn, I know more about Windows than the computer tech people at my school (and I don't even own a Windows computer), and I own more HD space than every compuer in my school put together. ~440 GB by the way.

Edit: As I later learned, the kid behind me was busy taking the keys off the keyboard, and rearranging them to spell naughty words.

If he were really geeky he would have proceeded to remap the keys...

You are a far better man than I musicpyrite. I would have opened the box and shoved his hand in the power supply, giving him a nice little jolt :D.

Hmm, I can't imagine what you are using those 440GB for, and your username doesn't give me any clues either ;).

That's a great story, musicpyrite. It's comforting to know America's next generation of burger flippers are well on their way to a lifetime of ignorance and idiocy. I need those burgers. :p

When I think of the good ol' days, I remember when a computer took up a whole room. Computer punch cards were used.

By the way, is the CPU the processor or is it the "box"... I've had disputes about this one... It's for Central Processing Unit, and the most central of processing units must be the processor, right?

Edit: This also reminds me of an episode of Buffy, where Willow's sitting in computer class and Cordelia asks "Now how do I save?" and Willow replies "DELiver". Cordy's screen goes blank.

(I also remember hacking the user database at my High School... *sigh*, those were the days...)

hahaha, gotta love the technology illiterate.... reminds me of something a teacher said when she asked me to fix something on here computer,

"You could fit everything I know about this computer stuff in a thimble and still have room for the Titanic"

By the way, is the CPU the processor or is it the "box"... I've had disputes about this one... It's for Central Processing Unit, and the most central of processing units must be the processor, right?CPU can mean the entire box (to distinguish it from the monitor). CPU can mean the main circuit board in the box (to distinguish it from the other components in the box). CPU can mean the chip on the main board. We just have to live with it being ambiguous and use words like chassis, motherboard, daughterboard, and processor when we want to be more specific.

In the good ol days...I didn't even use a computer. In fact, I didn't even drink red wine. I don't think I ate dark chocolate either.

How sad. :(

In the good-ol-days, I used a 486 DX 50MHZ, then a Pentium 133 MHZ........... (I'm not that old)

Anyone remember the training disks for computer use that came with the Apple IIc? Man, those were FUN!!!
