Now what if Awimoway encoutered one of these in his garage... ;) (reference to spider thread)
Pretty neat though. It reminds me of something out of Spiderman.

Just to pick, John Deere is with 3 e's.
I've seen claws like that on truck around here, useful for logging.

That is definitely not my father and grandfathers John Deer. Can remember them on the farm. That looks like a spider!

Can anyone explain a real-life use for this thing?

My educated guess is that it would be useful in foresting operations, where trucks with wheels would have a hard time.

it means you need fewer roads to log with. Fewer roads means less erosion. Less erosion means less environmental impact. Its a good thing. I am sure this beast has absolutely horrible mileage but that is probably saved in fuel spent making temporary roads.

Um, spider? More like an ant...
But cool stuff and its quite maneuverable - probably complicated to control if you want to do more than go forward and reverse (3rd video).
Now if they could just get the speed a little faster - damn cool stuff and I wonder if things like this will be part of human exploration on Mars and beyond....

COOL!
I can see all kind of uses for this thing. Put a backhoe on that platform and you could work on construction sites without building ramps and roads. This would be great for environmentally sensitive areas. Did you see the angle that thing is walking down? Let's improve the ground speed and you could have an awsome search and rescue vehicle.

Actually i was also thinking of search and rescue possibilities. And this things speed is not an issue in that environment IMHO. Search and rescue generally requires slow going as to not cause further harm to the victims or the rescuers.

Great idea!
As someone who has been involved in arial S&R operations, this would be a wonderful force multiplier.

It depends on the situation!
Ask those who have died while bleeding to death while waiting for S&R to arrive. In some cases, speed is critical. In others, the rescuers can take their time.
I had a few critical MEDEVACS before. Worst was from a motorcycle accident. Lot's of blood. I didn't ask, but I am sure that he was glad that we flew him as fast as possible to the nearest hosptial that could take care of his needs and save his life.

I don't know how smooth a ride that thing would give a patient - look at how much the back end moves around. Evacuating someone with that thing might add additional trauma to the person :D

How so? ( I don't know anything about logging.) That thing doesn't look it has anything on it that would be used for logging. It looks like it is for transport means.
And for search and rescue, wouldn't it be faster to just walk??
