View Full Version : Am I being overprotective here?

I lent my brother my iBook while I was out running an errand. He's borrowed it before, and I even made him his own Guest account hehe.
I come back, and I find out he took it in the washroom with him. He's been in there for over an hour.
Now my iBook smells like cigarette smoke :(
I'm really really really really really really really really unhappy
Seriously, he abused the privilege. I don't take it to the washroom with me, I'm smarter than that. I feel like hitting something.

If you lend something, you should get it back in the same condition I think.

Hit him, tell him that this was not right while standing over him and take his wallet and tell him the hundred bucks will cover for that... :D
Ok, maybe not. But you should definitely tell him that you think what he did was wrong and you'd expect something more than an apology if the smell does not go away.
If he is reluctant to do so you can still hit him. ;)

I'd be really annoyed at that. That's why I'm selfish when it comes to certain things I own. I try not to let anyone else near my PowerBook

woh! there's no need to smack him... unless he hits you I guess.
just tell him how you feel, and that you're happy to let him use it, but only if he shows it the proper respect otherwise you'll just have to ben him from it.
as long as there's no proper damage done and its just the smell of smoke (which will go), put it in proper perspective and take a few deep breathes.
don't talk to him until you've relaxed.

Hit him.
Hmmm... what's if he's the bigger brother?

Dec 23, 2004, 06:30 AM
Simple. Make him buy some non-abrasive cleaners and such, disinfectant... and make the f**ker clean it! (or perhaps do it yourself, he's obviously a bit stoopid)
But then I always go spastic if anyone so much as types to roughly on my keyboard, so perhaps I'm an extreme case.

I did it with my brother
He is 30 Kg heavier and 25 cm taller ... but wait, at that time I was 12...
I really don't feel happy doing that but he took my nintendo to the house of his friend and someone broke it there, children business!
Again, hit him... J/K

Urban, just to clarify, are you annoyed at your friend because of the cigarette smoke or because of the potential water damage that could've happened in the washroom? Your original post is kinda ambigious on that...
In any case, it has probably been too long since the incident to pursue anything now. I would simply not allow said friend to use your iBook again, or next time he asks, calmly explain your concerns and give him another chance.
At least there was no permanent damage.

Check the case before handling. Depending on what you find, make a love toy out of his pillow.

I'm sorry to hear about that urban1985_. You sound very particular about your things like me. I always hated to loan something to another while I was growing up. In my eyes, never got the item returned in the same condition.
Have you confronted him with your concerns? It is important to let him know how you feel.

ROTFLMAO, I have never read such humourous comment for sometime. :)
Delete his account and don't allow him to borrow your iBook again. :)

I used to hate loaning out my PowerBook but I've grown used to it now, since most of the dents are caused by me. I used to create guest accounts but now I just let people use it, because anything important is passworded anyway.
Bad luck though.
I wouldn't be happy if someone did that. I take mine in the bathroom sometimes though, on a strictly internet radio condition.

Next time he asks to borrow your iBook in the washroom, just give him a stack of magazines instead.
(Not that kind of magazine! Oh dear, I'm afraid we've already gone there. :p )

I generally don't loan out my computer or other very fragile and expensive electronics to anyone other than my closest friends for short, supervised periods. Never mind letting them take it to the john.

Blah, I'm less mad about it now. I was REALLY steaming mad when I posted that. It had just happened.
The cigarette smell is still in the keyboard :( and some in the vents. But meh I don't notice it unless I stick my nose really close to it.
I'm just gonna tell him that if he's borrowing it, he's not taking it in the washroom. and he should leave it plugged. It kills the battery life :p
And Oldschool, I moved to Burnaby when I was in Grade 10. I used to live in Vancouver, so I kept goin to my Vancouver high school.

That would even make it worse when it would come to cleaning the iBook itself and the keyboard. Let alone what the smoke might cause. :(

I've been given strange looks before, but I happen to like that new computer smell (like new car smell, but I've never had a car.) If someone stank up one of my Macs with cigarette smoke I'd ****** belt them one  You're not being over protective at all. I mean, even without the smell he took it into the bathroom. I don't think so...

About 3 years ago my little brother was playing some stupid toy story game on my PowerBook and when we lost he pounded on the palm rests and broke the CD drive and the hard drive. I fixed the CD drive some how but the HD was totally nuked. It came preloaded with about 700 songs for free and I lost all of them. I still don't let him touch my laptop to this day.

With Tiger this will be one problem less... Just lock all the porn sites and everything that starts with babe :D Actually just leave the kids sites to be visited and turn down the wireless reception so he cannot use it in the bathroom and let him pay $3 per hour he uses it plus $100 deposit for any damages he might cause. :D
Although I'd tell him to ******* off before I smack the sh** out of him when he asks again :D ;)

Kick him where it hurts
OR

Dude, if he used your iBook to do <self-censored> then tell him what you learned and that he will not be able to use your iBook for a long, long, time. Forever sounds good.
