If you get two airport express boxes, and use one as a basestation (assuming you don't already have a basestation), you can use the other one to connect the xbox to the net wirelessly. I have this setup with my playstation, and it was quite straightforward to set up.

Cheers.

Yeh, cool. To follow from my post above, what you guys need is a wireless bridge - a wireless box that will bridge the gap between your xbox and your main wireless basestation (assuming you already have a wireless network set up). Linksys, d-link, et al. make these for around $50 or so, and the airport express will also function as one.

Question about bridging: I've got the Airport Express hooked to the stereo, but it won't bridge wirelessly to my Linksys router, and I'd rather not waste money on a 20-ft. cable. Any suggestions?

Thanks guys. Now I have another question. I want to have some friends come over and all of us connect to Xbox Live for some Halo 2. Now of course I am using the my gamertag with all of them, but it will not let them join most of the game types as Guests. Is there anyway to allow them to play without being guest but not having to subscribe to Xbox Live? Also, do I have to use my same gamertag name all the time? My brother will probaly be playing one of his games on my Xbox overlive and I'd prefer it if he didn't use my gamertag. Thanks in advance, again.

Yeah they can be guests off of your account. Just have them sign in as a gues in the sign in screen.

I have my dsl modem going into a linksys switch then one cable runs to my AE and the other goes to my XBOX for live play. Total setup time was 5 mins. and I'm not wireless/wired savy. :o
Everything runs great :D

Is there anyway to connect Xbox Live to the AirPort so I can play it wirelessly?

Hi, I have a non-Airport wireless network set up using a Netgear DG834G and my Airport Express sits by my TV and streams music from my iMac via Airtunes. As the AX is right next to my Xbox I'd like to be able to plug my xbox into the AX and connect it to the Netgear network - is this possible?

There seems to be a lot of debate around on various sites as to whether you can actually get the AX to act as a wireless bridge with an xbox on a non-Aiport network... some claim to have got it working even though Apple officially say it doesn't

Any help/suggestions/clarification welcome! Please!

Thanks

I don't know if this helps at all, but if you check my post in this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=98846), I've written detailed instructions on how to use an AirPort Express as a wireless bridge with a Linksys WRT54G. With luck, some of that might help you.

XBox Live seems to be pretty hard to do this with. If you search google for something like "XBox Live with iBook" and stuff you will find many other forums with the same topics. These helped me out a bit, but I could still not get my DNS correct when connecting. I thought when connecting to Live in the Internet Settings area it would mean internet is being sent to the XBox but I was wrong. All I had to do was plug it in, share the internet and I can play on XBox connect easily without doing anything with IP numbers or anything.

Apparently with Live you shouldn't have to change the IP numbers anyways -- everything should be automatic.

Hey! Long-time Mac Addict but first-time poster here.

Sorry to be a pain, but I have been reading this thread and other similar ones for advice, and just want to clarify that my findings are correct.

I have an iBook with a (Wired) 1mb/sec broadband connection through an Xbridge DSL modem that I got from Apple and BT Yahoo Broadband (British ISP).

I play a lot of Xbox games, and would like to get into Xbox live. I have no experience of networking at all, but have decided to take the opportunity to set up everything wirelessly. Am I right in thinking that I need to get:

An Airport Extreme BaseStation
An Airport Extreme Card (For wireless internet on my iBook)
An Airport Express Thingummy
An Xbox Live Starter Kit

Does this Airport express thing have a good enough data transfer rate? Is there anything else I need? Forgive me for asking dumb questions, but I figure this will be expensive, so I wanna get it right and I know next to nothing about all this 802.11b/g speak.

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

802.11g (and 802.11b actually) will be faster than any home internet connection, and even a T1 line.

You can get two AP Express boxes instead, which is cheaper and allows you to stream music and print wirelessly. The card is only necessary for your iBook, although that is always nice too with AirTunes, etc.
The data rate, as someone else mentioned, for 802.11b (which are just arcane sounding names for wireless and the different versions) is more than the data coming in and out via your internet connection. And 802.11g is about 5 times as fast.

And further to the post of the chap above, that also assumes that your current modem is an ethernet modem (i.e. plugs into the ethernet port), not a USB modem, which is what comes with most broadband packages in the UK. If it is a USB modem, and you need to buy an ethernet one, I can recommend the Zoom X3 - quite cheap and mine's been reliable.

So basically, you need - 1x ethernet modem, 1x airport card, 2x airport express, 1x xbox live starter kit.

Assuming everything goes to plan, it should take you about 10 mins to set it all up and get our xbox online...

Thanks fellas, you've been an enormous help. Gee: BT Broadband did originally provide me with a USB DSL modem, but it was such a horrible, horrible, headache inducing, kernel-panic invoking monstrosity that I ditched it in favour of an Ethernet one (Xbridge DSL) about a year ago. Actually, I bought it from the Apple Store at the same time as my iBook, and the salesman bloke let me have it for free!!!! 70 quids worth!

Anyway, it's good to know that I can get two Airport Expresses instead of one of them and an Extreme BaseStation. BTW, what is the benefit of the latter-mentioned product then? Just the built-in modem?

Thanks again! :)

Yeh, the built in modem (although I have one that doesn't have this; think these have been discountinued), support for up to 50 users rather than 10 (not much use in a home environment), and probably the only useful thing: an additional ethernet port - this allows you to add an additional, wired device to the network, which you can't do with a single express where the modem would use the ethernet port. I use the extra port on my basestation for a second playstation ;-)

First one - assuming the AE is used as a bridge - is definitely straight-through (i.e., typical cable).

I assume the other one is as well (it is with my modem) since they're (modems) normally made to allow you to connect a computer to them directly, so they'd use normal cables presumably, not cross-overs.

I have a question about adding both a PS2 and Xbox to my Airport n/w:

Current set-up: cable modem>AE Base Station, with a Mac plugged into the ethernet port.

I have a PS2 (w/network adapter) and Xbox across the room, and don't want to run any cable around the room. I'd need a hub for that, anyway, so the cable modem could run into the AEBS, the hub would then plug into the AEBS e/net, and the Mac, PS2, and Xbox would plug into hub. Too many cables.

I need a wireless hub that can patch into the Airport network, and which has (at least) two ethernet ports I can plug the consoles into.

1- any suggestions for such a box?
2- will this even work?

1. Short of suggesting two airport expresses, no, sorry...
2. Yes, it will. this is analogous to the setup I have, and it will, so go for it! See you online...!

Great, thanks! I just wanted to make sure.
Just understand that it's my best guess that the modem isn't cross-over - my most recent 3 broadband modems (over 6 years) used straight cables. The one before that used a crossover.

However, my old iMac is connected to an AE via a straight cable as we speak.

 Help!!!!!

I have a boyfriend who is screaming at me for his Xbox live to be set up. Our house is totally wireless using 1 x airport extreme, with 2 x airport express for each xbox (since we have 2?)

The wireless network is functioning properly ie. airtunes, internet access etc. but when i plug in the ethernet cable to the xbox and the other end to my airport express i get a "no connection error" from the xbox??? when trying to connect to xbox live ... hence my very sad faced boyfriend!

When i try to use the xbox function to "problem solve it" it just goes back to the same error? The 'pimple-face' kid down at my local nerd shop said my cable may be at fault so i bought 2 new ones (crossover cat 6) as going by his recommendation ... what am i doing wrong? I have numerous other cat 5 class one-way cables and it is all the same error ... there must be an easier way to put a smile on my boyfriend's face?

anyone got any suggestions?

When you set up your airport express on your wireless network, did you use the option to 'join' your existing network, so that you only see one big network? Basically, this may be causing your problem if the express box is creating it's own small network - airtunes will still work, but the express will be expecting a modem in the ethernet port.

Another possibility - if you turn off airport on your Mac and plug that into the express box via the ethernet port, do you still get internet access?

For the record, my playstation is plugged into the express box using a crossover cable, so you should definitely try a setup using one of the cables the guy sold you....

 Help!!!!!

I've done this with an AE/Linksys combo. Perhaps something might be of use to you.

From an earlier post of mine:
Just got it to work for me. Linksys WRT54G and Airport Express, linked via WDS. I had to update the Linksys firmware using this (http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=8) site. That worked quite well - and I can boost the signal strength as well (I jacked it up slightly, not all the way, and saw better reception). I then set up the AE and, after some tweaking, all was well.

Key sites:

http://troyandgay.com/index.php?p=2888 (esp. comments below)
http://weblogs.java.net/blog/inder/archive/2004/10/using_airport_e_1.html

A couple of caveats:

(1) Be sure to use the correct Linksys MAC address when configuring WDS on the AE - you need to use the wireless MAC, not the router MAC. (On the Linksys, go to Status->Wireless to get the correct MAC address).

(2) Be sure to use the correct AE MAC address - or, if in doubt, use both the addresses on the AE.

Basics:
On the Linksys...

Fetch the Sveasoft firmware upgrade and, using the WRT54G's Administration->Firmware Upgrade panel, upload it to the Linksys. Fear not - it looks just like the original firmware with a few more options.
Under Wireless->WDS, add two LAN entries (one for each listed AE MAC address, so you don't need to bother deciding which one is the right one), disable Lazy WDS, and disable "WDS subnet"
Make note of the channel used under Wireless->Basic Settings
Make note of the wireless MAC listed in Status->Wireless

On the AE (or more precisely, using Airport Admin Utility)...

On Airport tab: Set Base station name, contact, and location to anything you want. set wireless mode to "Create a Wireless Network (Home Router)" Name the network whatever you want - same or different as WRT54G's SSID Set the channel to the one used by the WRT54G
On the Internet tab: Connect using AirPort (WDS) Set the MAC address to the WRT54G's wireless MAC Configure using DHCP
On the Network tab:disable everything
On the WDS tab: Enable as a WDS remote base station Select "allow wireless clients on this base station" Enter (or verify - it should be there by now) the Linksys wireless MAC

You can now use the AE as a wireless extender and plug an ethernet cable into it (not crossover/patch, just a standard cable) and plug non-wireless devices (like, say, an Xbox) directly into it.

Best of luck!

BTW, to completely reset the AE, should you muck it up, unplug it, use a paperclip, etc., to press the small reset button prior to plugging it in, keep it pressed as you plug in and for a dozen seconds or so until it blinks gree 4 times - this let up on the reset button and wait a minute or two. Then it's completely reset to factory specs. And, when intially setting it up, skip the internet connection portion of the setup (don't specify Cable/DSL modem, etc.).

I just got an Xbox (for free, thanks to Aeroplan), and I also have an airport network, but it is set up a little different. Will this configuration work with Xbox Live?

I have Cable modem --> Linksys BEFSR41 V2 (1.46.02 firmware) --> Airport (802.11b) base station set up as wireless bridge --> wireless PCs and Macs .

Will the Xbox live compatible wireless bridges work with this configuration?

hmm apparently there is already a solution for you gamecube, playstation 2 and xbox users. Instead of doing all of that work why cant you just buy a piece of device that will convert your wired ethernat cable to wireless. Such as what linksys has.

You could just buy the X-Box Wireless adapter.
It works flawlessly with my two airport express units.

Wireless X-Box (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/xboxwirelessadapter.htm)

All you have to do is plug in and it will auto config everything once you select the wirless netowork of your choice. No lag, perfect Halo 2 fragging every time!

It will also work with PS2, GC and anything else with a ethernet jack...jack!

I am trying to set up xBox Live for my son. I have airport extreme as the main base station and airport express set up as a remote to extend extreme. I think I want to use an ethernet cable connected from the xBox to the airport express, but when I try this I keep getting an error message that the xBox cannot find a connection.

The airport express displays a solid green light which should indicate it is connected to the internet.

What is wrong? Does anyone know a paper that describes this set-up? This should be a piece of cake but I've spent two hours on it.

Firstly it needs to be a cross-over ethernet cable, not a straight through cable - are you using one? Should be clearly marked as 'cross-over' on the cable itself....

I've been reading all this stuff and I still need help. :(

I have a cable modem and an Airport Express.

I use an airport extreme card on my G5, and I have my parents PC sharing the internet with a wireless card in their computer.

Recently I bought an X-box and I want to join Live. So recently I purchased another Airport Express. I also accidentally bought an ethernet cross-over cable, I meant to get a regular wire, but now I'm thinking I might need it anyway, but I did find a spare straight ethernet cable if I need it.

Ok...now my current problem. My current Airport express is working with my computer and internet, but I plugged in the 2nd airport, and connected it to the Xbox. HOWEVER, the 2nd Airport is just a blinking amber color.

I've been working with Airport Assistant but I'm not getting anywhere.
Can anyone step me through this process?

Oh, also, I have another unrelated question to gaming... I downloaded christmas photos from my camera to my computer. I don't want them but my parents do. I'd like be able to connect to my parents PC through my network. How do I access it? Right now my network only allows my Mac and my parents PC to use the network...We don't see each others computers when we view computers on our network. What do I do there?

I hope to get some answers. You can email me. I just really want to get this networking stuff solved. Thanks!!

When you're setting up the second express, you need it it join your existing network - can't remember the exact phrase it uses in the set up process. If you can't get it to set up, reset it using the little button on the side, and try using the Airport Admin Utility instead (should be in your utilities folder). You'll need to check 'enable this basestation as a WDS remote basestation' in the WDS tab, and then select the ID of your other express as the main basestation.

This should mean that you can then plug in the xBox to your second express and use it to bridge to the first - I think you'll need a crossover cable. You can test it by plugging in a computer to the express and seeing whether you can get onto the internet.

As regards sharing photos, you need to enable 'Personal file sharing' and 'windows sharing' in the Sharing pane of System preferences. On the windows machine, you need to set up a shared folder by right-clicking on it - somewhere in there there's an option to 'share this folder with other users on the network'. You should then be able to see each other in the Network thing in the finder.

Thanks Gee, I'm going to do what you suggested right now. I hope I can get it to work. I was messing around with a lot yesterday and with the WDS settings. I was a little weary to make changes with those setting since I don't know what any of that stuff really meant.

I'll post again if I have problems. Thanks for the quick reply :)

Ok, I did what you suggested Gee.

I clicked on "Enable this base station as a WDS" And selected remote basestation.

Then the menu changed to "click the Select button to scan for base stations and wireless networks in range of your computer which you can use as a WDS main base station."

Under it, it displays Main Airport ID:
I clicked select and another menu came up and that menu to select the basestation is empty. I click rescan and nothing comes up.

I still had the main AirPort Admin Utility and it displayed the Airport ID for my current setting. So I typed that in the "Main Airport ID."

When I clicked Update a warning came up.
"Remote base station in a WDS should not have DHCP and NAT enabled. Make sure to deselect "Distribute IP addresses" on the Network pane. Are you sure you want to keep this setting?

I had that warning come up last night and wasn't sure what I was about to do, so I clicked no. After I got your advice today, I clicked yes, deselected "distribute IP addresses" like it said I had to.

But then, when I did that I knocked out my whole network...I couldn't use anything internet related...No safari, no email, no ichat. Neither of my Airports were green, and the Airport Admin Utility didn't display anything.

I had to restart my computer and setup my network all over again.

Errr...I was told this hard part of this process was setting up the X-box. I haven't even reached that point yet!!!

Please help!

I had to restart my computer and setup my network all over again.

Errr...I was told this hard part of this process was setting up the X-box. I haven't even reached that point yet!!!

Please help!

Oh, that's not good! Although, I did have similar problems when I originally set up my express. I ended up basically starting from scratch by doing a hard reset of both the main basestation, and the express. Then, I set up the main one, without security or anything, using airport admin. When that was running, I switched on the express and configured that using the airport express setup utility to 'join existing network'. It kinda just worked, and the hours of faffing that i'd done beforehand seemed almost worthwhile.

Keep trying. On the positive side, once they're both going, the xbox should just plug right in ;-)

Not directly related, but what is the highest ranking that you can get on XBox live?

I tried working with it again with no luck. For a moment I think I accidentally joined one of my neighbors wireless networks. I can see their last name on my check list for networks I could connect to!

I also knocked out my network again and it took me a few minutes to get it working again. AHHHH!!!

What do you mean by hard reset? I was looking for way to clear out any trace of the network and the airport, but I'm can't seem to do that.

My xbox is in the same room as my computer, and I'm just tempted to unplug my cable modem from the working airport and plug it in directly to the Xbox when I want to play Live.... I'll just have to tell my parents to use their dial up when I'm playing Xbox. I don't want to but this airport nonsense is really pissing me off!!

I understand your frustration - it's a pain in the ass when it doesn't work. To do a hard reset, you hold down the little button on the side of the express with a biro or something while you're plugging it in - have a look in the manual for the exact instructions. This will put it back to the factory settings, allowing you to start again.

I'm having a similar problem here and maybe someone can help me. I am trying to connect to xbox live via Airport Extreme basestation. In my studio in the back of the house i have my DSL modem plugged into the phoneline. There is a cable going from the modem into a Linksys Router. 1 cable from the router to a PC, and one cable from the router to a airport basestation.
Inside my house i have my powermac G5 running Airport and a powerbook running airport. Both work very well. I also have my x-box hooked up to the T.v. in the same room. I bought the X-Box Wireless adapter shown in one of the threads above, and plugged it into the xbox. It recognizes my wireless network, but fails to connect. I really don't know anything about networking, and i'm really frustrated. Both apple support and xbox support are useless and blame each other for the problem! any help?? Below is a very loose diagram in case my info is confusing

I'm still not having any luck with this.

Can anyone redirect me to somewhere that might be able to help? I was looking at Apple's website and I can't really find any place to help.

I was also thinking, would getting an Airport Extreme basestation help? I believe that has multiple ethernet ports in it doesn't it? I was thinking I could just hard wire the Extreme to the Xbox? I'm thinking I could just return my second Airport Express and just use that towards the cost of the extreme.
