You will have to do some careful reading & learning to achieve satisfactory results.
I would recommend starting here (http://developer.apple.com/internet/macosx/intro.html), and then doing a Google search for "mac os x php mysql" or whatever to fill in any blanks.

or you can do it the easy way :D
http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/php/
http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/mysql/
follow all the instructions, run the installer page for your board, and it should be pretty easy

I've found O'reilly's articles to be very helpful:

ya those are great too. be sure to be careful about which instructions you follow, as the O'reilly ones overlap the other ones

I've installed the MySQL package from the entropy website, and I have tried running the following command in Terminal:
type "sudo ./scripts/mysql_install_db", enter administrator password when asked
After entering my password, I got an error saying:
"Sorry, the host 'macktheknife.local.' could not be looked up. Please configure the 'hostname' command to return a correct hostname."
Any suggestions?
