Just curious, as I read this before you decided to delete the thread:

what did you end up doing?

Well, I removed the software update utility. I then did some google searching and found this http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93736

Basically, when installing the ipod software from the CD, do not plug in the iPod until it tells you to.
