The adage "Everything old is new again" is predominant in our society today.
Since we have quite a bit of nostalgia freaks on here and some guys and gals born in the 70s and 80s I'd like to see what yalls favorite 80s toy is. Forgive me if ive forgotten one on the poll but it only alows for 10 so if you would like just post your favorite toy. Lord knows ive spent a lot of time back in the early 80s buying and playing with them transformers. I swear you spend 80 percent of the time transforming those toys and the other time playing with them but it made for a great child hood. Ive managed to collect and ressurect a few some of these toys from back then... especially my pride and joy original die cast 12" voltron. It's just the best feeling when you see something that brought you pleasure as a kid. Some good times man. Let the fun commence...

I'd have to say that the Star Wars toys would have been my favorite from your list, but go with Lego as the best - and it still is pretty damn cool.

Hey what about Lego and Smurf?

It is so funny the 80's in the US how different was from the 80's in my country. We had all those cartoons but they were "the darker stages of the 80's", in my country we where more in to japanesse animation:
-Mazinger Z
-Voltron
-Battle of the planets

Later on;
-Galactica
-V

and the good shows:
-Cosmos
-The twight light zone
-etc.

We had more european influence, specially with the music. The US musc was way too comertial (as always) but the european had personality in to it.

Earlier this year I decided to rekindle my childhood memories and recollect Garbage Pail Kids. I ended up buying a bunch through ebay, and actually found a guy who's able to get whichever 1st & 2nd series I want. I'm about halfway through my 1st series collection, and 1/4 through 2nd. I forgot how much fun these things were...he he he ;)

anyone around happen to have any in good shape they are willing to part with?

my gi joe was from the mid sixties or at least from maybe '68 and they were a foot tall and had hair

somehow the teens in high school did not like the concept since they were being sent to vietnam through the draft

hard core pro military high school kids, there were only a small handful, got to go to southeast asia after the end of the draft up to the class of 1975...but to my knowledge, the last high school kid from my high school to get killed over there was from the previous class of 74

three years after the whole vietnam mistake was over, our art teacher used to tell us of students who didn't come back normal, or at all, after the battles and one star student came back and told the teacher about having to cut ears off of dead viet cong to ensure that the body counts required by the military were correct

it really messed him up

and when i was a volunteer social worker and saw many homeless, too many of them were in vietnam...when i was a kid, i was a huge military buff, and these poor souls had the proper uniforms on tattered to all heck and some just kept on crapping and pissing in them while they huddled next to the jesus saves mission building waiting for their next meal or change for beer

born on the fourth of july or forrest gump and lt dan's character were dead on from the people i ran into...many of them drunks and junkies

Wow! Thanks for the trip down memory lane....

I had a ton of Star Wars and GI Joe stuff. Mostly the first through third series for both.

Had a few Transformers too. The old ones were a lot better made than the cheap ones out now. (My nephew has some I was playing around with a few weeks ago.)

Garbage Pail kids were kind of discusting then...and they still are (sorry eye).

Star Wars is back. So are GI Joe and Transformers. Saw He-Man figures at Toys-R-Us a few weeks ago! Lego has always been around. I have seen a few Rubiks cubes on the toy store shelves from time to time over the years.

So what is next in the wonderful world of re-run toys?

great guys.

i basically put a poll up for toys that were created during the 80's and big of course. i dont think hot wheels, legos or tonka was created during that time but i could be wrong. so im not certain.
again... anyone have any transformers, voltron or what not they want to send me ill be happy to accept them. rock it!

Legos, legos, legos! The scary thing is, I still have most of them.

Oh, and I remember when I was about 4, I had this Inspector Gadget doll. He actually did stuff, like feet sprang out, helicopter attached to his head, etc. etc. That was awesome. (And promptly broken.) :D

I got my first Lego set for Xmas in 1976 when I was 6. Loved it to bits - as did my Old English Sheepdog, Waldo (he used to eat the parts, and we'd have to wait a few days to get 'em back - ewwww!).

But for the 80's, my FAVE toy on the planet was my Sinclair ZX81 - my first computer (if you could call it that - a pocket calculator has more power now!). It had a touch-membrane keypad, and a 16K ram pack (oooh - STACKS of memory!). Touch it in the wrong place, and the 20 minutes taken to download a program from the tape deck was wasted - the ram pack would move, and the computer would crash. Bummer.

In 1984, I raided my bank account and got an Apple ][e with all the trimmings (great games, and you could pound the bastard and it wouldn't crash. Great stuff...). Then, I got my first Mac in 1987 before I went to University - a 512KE. That did me well until I hit the big time, getting my first colour Mac in the 90's (but that's another decade...).

I had Go-Bots and transformers but until the Go-Bots went away I preferred them. I think it would be improper to call them a rip off since they came out at the same time as Transformers if not before if you consider there Japanese release. http://www.toyarchive.com/Go-Bots.html .

All of this aside I just like stirring things up. ;)

The sign's light source is flourescent - approximate colour temperature 4700K. However, it's a dusk (or dawn) shot with ambient light set at between 8-9000K.

As standard daylight is approximately 5600K, the sign's lighting will look a little green...

What can I say, duke? It's a hobby of mine...

;)

Mr. Anderson
Sep 7, 2002, 10:27 AM
Yes, but the reflective nature of the Viper's paint would have some part of the green light in the color - I was just mentioning that since his photoshop skills need to be tweeked a little more. Still, its a good job.

D :D

krossfyter
Sep 7, 2002, 11:15 AM
hey duke i honestly believe it will always look a little off. why? because the pics were shot at different times under different lighting sources. im not trying to make it look perfect. its the idea thats the main factor here. anyways i will not be using this in my resume. i have two versions of this picture... one where the sign is less green and this one. both look off... but its the principle of the matter thats of issue here anyways mixed in with a little fun. kiwi_the_iwik has the right idea about the current lighting configuration. but thanks though for keeping my skills in check. :D

Also Scalextric.......... and Lolo balls, Impossiballs, Raleigh Vektar Electronic BMX, and Terrahawks toys cos they were so much cooler than Thunderbirds because of the Zeroids.....

Oh lest we not forget Zoids...... Tomy reintroduced them a couple of years ago..... but they lacked the coolness of the original 80's versions....... but Zoids would kick Transformers ar*e in a fight....... heh heh :p

I think I may have inadvertently started a Transformers Vs Zoids war.... :D :p

http://members.lycos.nl/frx/zoids/zoidzilla.html

Zoids were self assembly kits made by Tomy........ they were based on Dinosaurs and were either battery powered or wind up powered...... the biggest baddass one was Zoidzilla..... he was huge, and could steamroller right over Optimus Prime and co........

Tomy re-released them a couple of years ago, called, imagintively enough Zoids 2, but they lack the coolness of the originals......

Zoids kick ar*e!! :D :p :p

what's funny is, on a toy excurtion to the local toy store (to let my 2 boys buy Bionicles w/their allowance) I ran across some Care Bears....

Picked one up and remaniced about my childhood when my sister had many of them...

Now my kids have one each...and they came with some old videos of the care bear episodes...I guess so you can learn what they are all about.
