ok , this is a stupid thread, but someone at this site has the name "vector" and i learned about vectors and scalars in physics today! it was a lot of fun AND MY TEACHER IS THE COOLEST PHYSICS TEACHER EVER , at least in my little world. He treats physics like a magic class, we do all these mind boggling tricks and then relate them to physics, its great fun mate.
p.s. scalars are measurements with one "unit" like time and mass and volume.
vectors have two measurements like acceleration and directions etc. " which means they have something like degrees in the case of directions but then you can point which they go also. WOW I LOVE PHYSICS. to bad im gonna be a surgeon. shucks , maybe next lifetime.:p

Hey, man. This is a community thread. You can bull[E] all you want. And have fun while you are at it! :D
I learned a bit about vectors in Honors Pre-Calc earlier this year. I kind of struggled for a bit in harder vectors, most with the advanced parametric 2D curves and proportions.
I'm glad to hear you are enjoying it. What level of Physics are you in? I plan to take Honors Physics, and that should go along very nicely with my past knowledge on vectors and my upcoming Calc.

well, im in physics cp, which is college prepatory, but im in calculus 2 at the local university, i doubled up in geometry and alg 2 in ninth grade, and honors physics wouldn't fit into my schedule because Latin 5 is only offered one time of the year and so that went out the window, but honors physics, at my school, is just a faster class in that you have to have your homework in earlier than the cp, and tomorrow we get our first test back , im so so so worried about those damn significant digits

I used to be a Reactor Operator on a submarine in the Navy. We went through 18 months of school (6 hours of class per day five days a week, with a minimum of 2 hours of homework per night, all mandatory). We learned a lot of physics in some of the classes, and it was all very interesting. I like Pascal's law:
The pressure exerted on the surface of an enclosed fluid at rest is transmitted equally and undiminished throughout the fluid and the walls of its container.
Physics is alot of fun. If you are really interested, try to find the video series "The Mechanical Universe" You may be able to find it in a library. It was done by a Cal Tech professor, and they have alot of reinactments and cool graphics and experiments to explain things. It is really interesting. Like Cosmos is for Astronomy, this series is for mechanics.
ps If you are having trouble trying to understand a concept, feel free to email me or IM me.

i might take you up on that offer sometime next year.
i'll be taking physics next semester and from what ive heard from my friends, its not the easiest of classes.

GO VECTORS!
As a mechanical engineering student, vectors are essentially what we do. One of my engineering friends actually said that vectors were more interesting than a girl. Occasionally, *occasionally*, we are extreme losers, but really vectors become more and more important as you get into AP/College Physics/Engineering.
WOOHOO, college starts in a week and vectors become part of everyday life once again!
Well, maybe they are not quite exciting, but if you enjoy them like some do, including me, physics can be FUN!

i took physics last year and am in calc this year... all i have to say is that i wish i could have taken calc & physics at the same time... knowing just some basic calc has made everything i learned in physics at least a bit easier :P
i found physics pretty challenging, especially the tests, but am incredibly happy that i took it
btw, my physics teacher was a perverted weirdo :P ... quite a fun class indeed...
i think this was my 500th post

Vectors are fun!!! Weeeeee!!
One of my favorite classes in college was an elective vector analysis class. I think the idea of vectors is cool because they have so many practical applications in the real world.
After taking a few years of math in college, a class dealing with vectors can shed some light on how to apply the concepts you learned over the years. For anything dealing with position, direction, and motion, vectors are on the case.

Don't forget that a vector is also an organism that transmits disease causing micro-organisms to another organism and it is also a pathway for inserting foreign DNA into the genome of a host cell.
A little taste of bio in an otherwise dull and physics-filled world. ;)

Wait until you get to the multiplication of 3D vectors. Getting cross and dot products becomes really fun, but only after you get through the gruelling proofs and after you understand what's really happening in the 3D space.

Man, that's the easiest part for me. As long as you know what you are doing with your numbers, you automatically pass about 10 percent of a physics test. :D
>(topicolo) Don't forget that a vector is also an organism that transmits disease causing micro-organisms to another organism and it is also a pathway for inserting foreign DNA into the genome of a host cell.
The way I was taught this in Bio: A vector is a means by which foreign DNA can be transplanted into a human cell. I'm glad you had to bring that up, though. My biology teacher was the perfect example on how science should be taught. I saw was, as she retired this past year. She was probably one of the best teachers you could ever find.

Oh, man. Proofs are probably the hardest thing I'll ever do in Math. I mean, I managed to prove (given an already completed proof) something on occassion nobody else in the class could figure out.
And working with 3 dimensions should be really cool, but I think I have another year to go before I work with 3D vectors. I won't be working with parametric surfaces in 3D, since I'm not taking BC Calc. I hear if you miss a day of class in BC Calc, it's like a week's worth of AB Calc.
If you can handle BC Calc easily (or even AB Calc) before you reach college, you are a [E]ing math genius. :p

I'm a senior in high school taking physics 2 AP with a class of 4 people (including me!)
The teacher has been teaching physics for a while, but hasn't taught the AP class, but he's getting help from my physics 1 teacher I had last year who retired (this teacher taught physics 2 for quite some time...)
As for vectors, we just reviewed them a bit today... Nothing too hard...
Here's a question for some of you math/physics guys...
How fast is the speed of light in furlongs per fortnights (furlongs/fortnights)?

Well, my little bro is a friggin brain in case you can't tell. He is going to be something special in life, and he will be successful. I am more proud of him than he will ever know.
On the subject I love that people can enjoy physics. I also admire his ability to start a good thread and then disapear from it ;)

speed of light = aprox. 670617932.5 miles per hour.
1 furlong = 1/8 mile.
1 hour = 1/336 of a fortnight (two weeks, right?)
so...
670617932.5 (miles/hour)
x(8 furlongs / mile)
x(336 hours / fortnight) =
1802621002266.432

.............Disappear.......?!?!?!
i have to continually stay and talk and update, well sorry but there was homework and then the server was busy and blah blah blah.....
I'm extremely proud of my calc 2 homework I actually understood it, geez and the teacher has the thickest accent its not even funny.
I REMEMBER 3D Figures from AB Cal ! , they were fun!

are you really related to bttm?:D
and would that make you a gop man? then you must battle with taft, jello, macrain, and myself...he he

i REALLY am related to him, but we are TWO different people, i dunno what kinda party i belong to , cause im only 17, and i don't like george bush anything, or al gore for that matter, but i like nice things , so does that make me a republican, cause they are always the rich ones, and i like change so does that make me a democrat, its all so confusing, i just need to take some kinda test. . . . I hope im not a subconscious socialist, uh oh!

ugh, 3 courses of Linear Algebra in college really got me to hate those damn things - but matrix and vector calculation go hand in hand when working in 3D graphics. While I was in school I had to write my own 3D app in C, and everything to rotate, translate, etc. was a 4x4 matrix calculation with a vector (point) a lot of fun when you got it all working. I think I have that code around somewhere, I might have to dig it up and get a little nostalgic.

Yet one more success in the leftist media campaign to make the average American youth ignorant to politics. ;)
Why don't you like GW? Why not Gore? Gore is a good man, with a great record, and from your State! Why are republicans the rich ones? Am I rich? Tara, mom and dad, Coley, Troy, Tracie and Kerri, Michael, etc, etc, etc.
Don't let the media's stereotype of either on of the parties distort you opinion of politics or the party. Learn about each and make your own informed decision.
Oh, and BTW, you are a republican.

now - resume contemplation of vectors or I'll be doing some vectoring to your @ss! ;)

Hey, he started it Duke! he.he. Yea, vectors smectors. I don't even know what a vector is. Open class, the student is waiting for a lesson. Explain it to me. I can understand concepts like that, but I have never learned them.

Vectors are a basic part of physics and mechanics (Statics) - I could go in to a long discussion, but sometimes the web has all the info - and I found a place with nice 3D graphics to go along with the description -
http://id.mind.net/~zona/mstm/physics/mechanics/vectors/vectors.html
its all about forces, and a decent understanding of geometry and trig are necessary (sin, cos, etc)
may the vector be with you!

too funny
with taft, mcrain, jello, and me clearly on the left and bttm the sole regular voice of the right, we need a few more gop people to make it a fair discussion
i put jello the libertarian on the left since the hands off stance of even the most conservative libertarians make them pro choice
currently, if one is pro life, then they cannot be a libertarian...it is a newer party that has come forward and they stick to pro choice for now

business majors like i was in undergrad school only had to take college freshman level math and at least for me...no physics
my level of science in undergrad school was geology 1 and biology 1...that's it
engineering students and med students had to do four years of science and i commend those brave souls

Well anyway back to physics,
today we found out what we made on our test ... 96...only 5 people in two classes made a 96 or higher :)
im proud of myself, and i made a 93 in physiology :D my dad said i could have made a 100 in both if i had studied , but hey why fix it if it ain't broken.
but we also did more with displacement distance and the such today, and the teacher, Mr. M, always asks me the questions that are tricky, i don't why, but i always answer them right...lol! @ him, trying to stump me
and we also worked a problem that explained the counting thing you do when you see lightening to tell you how close the storm is...... well it turns out that every 5 secs is equal to a mile instead of 1 sec = 1 mi, did you know that, so when you're counting next time outside, just keep that in mind ;)
I've got a busy schedule this afternoon today, I've got to pull weeds in the garden at home, BT2M can varify its a lot, and then i have to go to the school and garden with the LRE kids, which is fun and we eat a lot too!
:p and then im going with my sister christen to sylvan learning center, and then to christie's house to watch the VMA"S WOOO! i can't wait to see the hives and the vines and sheryl crow and eminem and then the rest of them :D
i hope you guys have a great day, and this is physics understand and social studies!
Oh! i have one more thing, i made an 80s cd today, clearly the best music of all time next to the greats~Bach , Handel, Beethoven, Mozart, and the best of the best Alfred Wagner oh wow is he good :D ~ but i love 80s music ahh and it was the best decade especially the year 1985 ~ it was a really good year for the world :D
well im outtie catch ya on the flip side fellas and chiquitas
p.s. how do you know im republican , like i said i could be a subconcious socialist for all we know, it could be under my skin like aids and needs a trigger to set it off,..........but you're probably right, im republican, they are so much cleaner eek! i feel a sudden wave of heat, hrmmm.....
