View Full Version : How much memory do the macrumors.com readers have?

Now that we are inspecting each others hardware :) thru these forums, I was wondering what amounts of memory you all put in your precious babies ;)

I would think everybody just goes to the max, with the memory prices being reasonable these days.

Why go to the max?
I have 512MB in my new iMac, it's enough for me... and for now :)
Maybe I add a second 512MB chip next year..
My dual G4 has 896 MB

I currently have 2 x 512Mb DIMMS in my QS, I'm thinking about maxing it out to 1.5Gb by adding an extra 512Mb DIMM, but currently I don't need it...and besides...I'm saving for when the new PowerBooks are released :D

I had just 10 options so I had to make a selection :)

You can always vote the option "just scraped together some modules and ended up with 768MB" ;)

I have two 512mb and one 128mb for a total of 1152mb. I want to get another 512mb to max it out but it is not really a necesary right now. I can get one for about $65 + shipping right now but I think they will go down even more with new powermacs being DDR. I will wait and see.

Power Macintosh 7600/132- 72MB
Mac IIsi - 5MB
Mac Plus - 4MB
PowerBook 100 -4MB
Mac Classic - 4MB

TI-83 Calculator - 32KB

I would get more memory for my PM but costs about AU$256 for 64MB
And my computer has a whole lot of different modules stuck in but they still interlace well

Since we're on the subject of calculator memory my TI-89 has 890KB (I think). Pretty bad for something that cost $179US (when I bought it, now it's $139:( )
Anyway, here goes:

iBook- 384MB
Macintosh Quadra 650- 64MB
Macintosh Quadra 605- 36MB
Macintosh Quadra 610- 8MB
Macintosh LC575- 36MB

AMD Athlon 1700+ - 768MB

Only wusses use a measily TI-83! :D :p

If you want real power from TI, go with model 89. It's beats the heck out of the 83, 83 plus AND the 86. And it's worth EVERY penny.

ibookin'@mwny, what minimum amount of RAM would you suggest for a TI-89?

Ah, I remember my 86. Its the best for games...good space, very stable. Too bad mine got stolen...

If you plan on going to college, do yourself a favor and get an 89! Very useful...I had mine when it first came out...profs didn't know much about them...I could use them on calc tests! Too bad some are banning them now...:(

The TI-89 is great.

128Mb currently, just received a 256Mb stick, which will be plugged in when I'm home :D

So technically still 128Mb and that's what I voted.
But only downside is that I cannot seem to have the 256Mb and 1 of the 64 at the same time
Oh well, anything's better than 128Mb so...

>(Over Achiever) I could use [the TI-89] on calc tests! Too bad some are banning them now...:(

That's really stupid, IMO. I know that with NMQSTs and SATs you are not allowed to use a TI-92 Plus or any other Calculator with a keyboard-like design. But if you ban TI-89s you might as well ban every model of TI built in the form of the Graphing Calculator series. I know that there are special programs you can input to model calcs like the TI-89, but it wouldn't hurt to put limitations on Calculators.

>(KC) ibookin'@mwny, what minimum amount of RAM would you suggest for a TI-89?

>(Over Achiever) huh? you can change the ram? how? why?

Let's say you wanted your TI-89 to solve a complex exponential growth function by trying to isolate in the root part of the exponent, and you ran out of memory. If you have more, your calculator can do a lot more calculations, FYI.

Aug 30, 2002, 12:20 PM
I've got a beige G3 with 192Mb, I was going to upgrade to 384Mb last year (it's all my POS G3 can take) but the RAM prices kept changing around the £18 mark for 128Mb, I'm kicking myself now because the price of 128Mb has been stuck at £33 - £38 all year.

I'm going to add another 128 soon, 320Mb should be enough till I get a faster mac, spending much more on stuff for my mac would just be wasted money that I could save up towards a new G4.

I know. But I have a little brother that took the ACTs...they personally checked every calc in the room he told me. Its not just the programs on the TI-89...its the symbolic manuplation capabilities or something. But FYI, the TI-89 is banned for ACTs, and I've been a TA in classes where they're just banning all graphing calculators because of the text editor. I personally have been in a quantum chemistry class where graphing calculators were banned...it sucked. This is stupid, but its happening.

As for the RAM thing, I just dunno how to upgrade it.;)

Buying memory is the cheapest way to make your system faster and better.

There is another DIMM slot, but you have to take the computer apart.

I recommend having NO LESS than 512MB for your computer, unless your computer only supports up to 320MB or so. Maximize it now if you haven't already.

For the cheapest memory, go here (http://18004memory.com).

My father has purchased 1GB of memory for my Cube and his G3, along with some memory for his PowerBook G3. The memory has not given us any problems, AFAIK.

I haven't tried memory from Crucial, but why bother when you can get whatever works in its most reduced price form?

Cheaper memory is usually cheaper for a reason. Even w/a lifetime warranty, if something breaks, you have to go through the headache of taking it back.

I've heard everything good about Crucial, but nothing on 1800.

I guess it's because they don't advertise that much. Some of the best dealers are the ones that do no/little advertising.

Some people may have had issues with 1800 memory before, but that was because they were working on fixing the memory for the 4.1.8 firmware update provided by Apple.
