it's a new 2002 vespa.
due to a new law in texas, i can't get my license until late next year.
my dad offered to buy a vespa for me, since the only requirements for the license is that you are over 15 years of age.
it costs 2900 dollars. because of the moped laws, it is limited to a 50cc engine. top speed is close to 50 mph.
i'll only be using this to get around the suburbia i live in, so i won't be in any danger of being smashed by huge suvs.
which one do you guys think i should go for? :)
Mr. Anderson
Aug 29, 2002, 08:02 PM
in a year you get your license and you're going to be wanting to run around on a vespa?
in a year you'll still have a dual 867 and loving it?
hmm, its a personal pref - mobility now or a computer - personaly my choice would be my bike and the computer - no vespa and get excercise instead of cruising around.
But remember, I'm 37 and I might be out of touch when it comes to whats *in* for kids.....

Would you be getting access to a full vehicle when you get your license?
I would say the computer, but if you are forced to get the Vespa for transportation for a couple years then buy that.
Go with the Tower.

its not just the licence that is an issue here.
atm my beetle is not ready to be driven.
i will still have a lot of work to do on it, it will be at least 6 months from the end of this year (est.) before it is ready for daily use.
otherwise, i have no transportation of my own and my parents do not have the time to take me where i need to go.
however, i am also in bad need of a new computer. my old mac died and ive been stuck using 9.2 for almost 5 months now.
i am leaning towards the vespa, simply because i could probably pay for a new tower myself around january of next year.
in my case, mobility is key; i live in a very quiet suburban area. i would probably still use the vespa even after i got my full license.
but that tower sure is nice.... :D
oh duke, dont worry, you're not "out of touch" :D

Get the Vespa if you will be able to get a Tower by January.

my dad does not want me to spend the money on the tower. he is only willing to pay for the vespa.
my dad and i had a deal a while back that if i invested or started an ira with my money, he would purchase a tower for me.
i can see where he is coming from, especially if i started a roth ira; it would compound and i would not have to worry about retirement (that much.)
however, this was before the transportation issue came up.

get the vespa and get whatever comes out next in towers.... it's possible that it will be way better than the latest upgrade... of course, that might not happen. but it might
what if he buys the vespa, you invest, then he buys the powermac? or would him buying the vespa take the place of the powermac?....

I have always wanted a Vespa scooter. It's one of those things in those (now) old Italian movies that's so wonderful. Mopeds are okay, but a Vespa scooter is so much more. Of course, they're also expensive and cantankerous.
Will you eschew the car and keep the scooter even after you can get a license? If you can truly say that you'll be able to live without the car after your friends have their licenses and cars and will feel no burning need, get the Vespa (and let me ride it.)
Otherwise, it's dual 867s for you. :)

Ugh... I'm staying away from mopeds for quite a while...
Just yesterday (thursday), I heard a car hit two kids on a moped/motorized scooter... The sound was sickening... Fortunately, the kids are ok, and the car that hit them was going 10mph under the speed limit. Of course, the kids were at fault because they ran a light...
I'd say go for the tower... But if you do go for the moped, just be careful ;)

i think the vespa is cool but i wouldn't ride one on a public street. all you need is some suburban-driving-cell-phone-yakking-soccer-mom to run a light and...
now if you lived in rome instead of near houston...i'd say get the vespa.

There really is no good advice that we can give not knowing your situation. Do you need the transportaion? Do you need the Tower? Would an iMac be better for you? Give us some more info and we can make a better suggestion.

computer situation :
my old slot loading imac died a horrible death. i am currently stuck using my brothers.
i want a tower. expansion will be key when i go to college. an imac is nice, however upgrades would be limited (and to be honest, im tired of the all-in-one concept)
my plan was to bto a 867 tower with an 80GB HD and a radeon 9000.
i use my computer for a variety of things. it was at the top of my priorities until the issue with transportation came up.
word of note : i have not used X since early May.
transportation situation :
i have many after school sports and activities that i have to attend.
however my parents cannot take me due to other commitments and time constraints.
i will be able to get my license next year (around feb.)
currently i have a 1974 beetle that is a work in progress. and i do mean work in progress.
i could have it drivable in two months. i could have it looking respectable by the end of the year.
however i would be unable to drive anywhere by myself until next year.
note : my friends do currently drive me around to my activities when my parents cannot.
the vespa would be nice, however, it is not a must.
financial situation :
i had a deal with my dad; i invest (or start a roth ira) and he purchases something that is equal to the dollar value of my investment (or ira.)
when i start an ira or invest, i can either choose the vespa or the tower.
currently i have about 1200 in the bank after two months of working odd jobs over the summer.
personal opinion :
after fixing the fuel line/system on the beetle last night (i have to order a new fuel pump for it. it will cost 250 dollars.) i think i will be able to have it up and running very soon indeed.
although the vespa would be nice, it is also a bit rushed. if i purchase the tower within the next two months or so, the beetle will be drivable.
since i started this thread i have also talked to my dad. he seems more willing to buy the tower, as he expressed his concern about my safety on the road.
perhaps the tower would be the better choice.

yea that what i like about them.
just like a mac, you can tinker with every aspect of the car.
personally i don't mind it at all. i think it is quite fun to constantly mess with the car.

I'm pretty sure the iBook is the best for my needs. I need a small mobile Mac that is faster then my G3 300 tower. That and it needs to be in the $1200 range. I would prefer a TiBook but my budget doesn't allow it. That is unless B2TM felt like losing $1000 to give me a TiBook for around $1200 ;)

Fix up the bug and buy the tower now (but at least get the Dual Gig with the faster bus)...
...then apply to colleges in "college towns" where you don't need a car...
...sell the Bug to some kid in the same situation you're in now...and use the money to get the new top of the line Vespa (the one that goes over 60 Mph)...and use the rest to upgrade the tower...
As cool as classic bugs are to you now and they were to some of my friends in high school, not one of my friends kept that car much past the first year of college...
