i am a techie that has only been in the business for about three years and i keep hearing the term hot-swapable or hot-pluggable

...yes, so you don't have to shut down first, but what is not hot swapable?

in the pc world, everybody i know has done this with their 25 pin parallel cables and i have never heard of a problem yet

i do it with my pc and the 9 pin serial cable for my digital camera and there is no problem there either

and of course, the usb on my mac and pc are made for that, so there is no problem there

Hot swapable is related to the drives!!!

Like on Compaq (HP) notebooks, you can remove the drives(DVD

or floppy) from the bays without shutting down the unit.

And on some rackmount servers, you can remove the hard drives

(SCSI) without sutting down the unit!!;)

Hence the term Hot Swappable;) :D

It is windows, so it will probably freeze up!!!

Even in XP:D ;)

I thank God everyday for technologies like USB & Firewire...it's such a convenience to be able to unplug devices without the system crashing...

and even more a convenience to be able to plug something in at any given time...no need for them to be assigned an address on the bus at startup ;)

or on the old g3 powerbooks, where you could take out the DVD drive and replace it with an extra battery :D

just don't take out both batteries at once!

maybe i should not swap the terms hot pluggable with hot swappable...it's a bad habit i have along with my tech friends

but any problems with pc twenty five pin parallel or nine pin serial ports and plugging in while on?

;)

If you buy an expensive mainframe from IBM, and I believe you can have all of these hot-swappable as well. This is partly achieved because there is more than one CPU, PSU etc. Provides a level of continuous operation that isn't cost-justified for home machines!
