Hey guys,

I've had my Powerbook 12in / 1GHz / 256 / 40gig since April, when I bought it as my first mac. Since then I've added a 20in cinema display and an external 160gig LaCie drive. I'm now considering changing the Powerbook either for a 1.42 Mac Mini, or a 1.8GHz Powermac. I'm also considering the iMac as a viable replacement. My first question is; do you guys have any recommendations? I'd like the fastest computer for my money, but I'm still in high school, and I'm still paying off the monitor :)

My second question; what would the resale value be on the Powerbook? I'm in the UK, if that matters. I bought the Powerbook in New York though, so there's no box and it's an American keyboard! I do have all the documents, including invoices / receipts, Apple handbooks, vouchers, etc.

Any help would be much appreciated!

andy.

A good place to go look is eBay. See what others are selling theirs for. It will allow you to gauge what price you can get for it. Another thing you can do is look at places that sell refurb and used Macs and see their prices. You probably won't be able to get their prices for it but, again, it is another place you can at least see what a fair price could be.

Hm, you could sell that PB for $1200+, and get a mini 1.42 w/ 512mb, 80gb, SD, new Apple keyb and mouse, with iLife '05 for $830 or so. That's gonna leave almost $400 for whatever you want* and give you a computer that is probably a bit faster than your current PB.

You would have to put in some of your own cash to get a 1.8 PM, and then some more to get the RAM up to level that it wouldn't bottleneck the CPU.

* $400 could =
$400 of cash in the bank for a rainy day,
a very nice digital camera,
a somewhat decent MiniDV camera,
an iPod or a mini+shuffle(for the significant other?),
etc, etc, etc.

Heya,

Thanks very much for the advice guys!

Think I might well go for a mini and save the extra money, as you say it'll come in useful for lotsa different things. Maybe stick it on eBay? I did try looking at ebay.co.uk but there were no equivalent sales happening, so I wasn't able to gauge prices! $1200 resale and I paid $1600, roughly equivalent to selling for, what, 700UKP after buying for 1100UKP? I think that's about the equivalent.

Oh yeah, forgot you're in the UK. It'll be tough to price because of the recent price "correction" in the Apple UK store (for the exchange rates). On the other hand, you guys would have to pay a big VAT tax on a new Apple, but a not a used one, right? That will probably help the resale of Macs over there.

Anyways, eBay is probably your best bet to get the most money, but selling it on a site like macrumors will save you ebay fees, and alot of hassle probably as well.

Regardless, a maxed out mini will leave you tons of cash after selling a PB, so you'll do well. Also, does your PB have Applecare? That will add considerably to it's resale value.

Heya,

Thanks for all your help mrgreen, it's very much appreciated!

Well just to gauge interest; would anyone be willing to buy? Preferably UK, to avoid huge shipping charges I guess! Even if you're not willing to buy, what WOULD you pay??

Just to see! I'm really keen on a Mini, so I'm very tempted to sell up!

Thanks again,

andy.
