MacRumors

MacRumors has received reader reports that the first wave of Mac minis has already begun shipping. The new machine, unveiled by Steve Jobs at MWSF 05, measures 6.5" wide x 6.5" deep x 2" tall, and is expected for general availability on January 22.

I wonder how many of those are bog-standard units and how many are BTOs. I plan to buy a 1.42GHz/80GB model with SuperDrive, AirportExtreme and Bluetooth. I look forward to hearing other people's experiences with the machines.

Apple made me mad. I ordered within 30 mins of the store coming back up (BTO, Superdrive and BT). I called the NEXT DAY to up it to 512RAM. The genious on the phone CANCELLED my previous order (due to arrive on Jan 22) and entered a whole new one, with the upped memory. Now it says its shipping on or before Feb 10th...

Looks like the Mac lunch box is shipping nicely along now... good to see volume ready so soon after an announcement rather than the enternal wait... in our part of the globe - ie too small to notice is generally takes a couple of months for product to get here...
Just wish Apple would hurry up and finish Tiger... getting sick of waiting for the new thingamagiggs....

Er, you're off by a factor of ten or so. I heard that there were 20,000 available at the SF Apple Store on release day, sold out within hours, and they're scheduled to manufacture 500,000 a month. I'm sure hundreds of thousands are preordered at this point.

I have ordered a BTO version with a French OS; I guess they won't ship it that soon...
Just go into system prefs and set the perferred language to French... All your Apple apps will speak French just by turning that pref on. I could never understand people ordering a French version in America... Je parle de nous, évidemment.
The only benefit you will have will the French print on the box, the small highly illustrated manual (it is real tiny) and a delay.
On the other hand someone has to ask for a French box, but you realize you get the system that is sold in France, thus the delay.
c'est beaucoup plus rapide de prendre ce qui vient. Mac OS X est un système multilingue.

Shenzhen China to be exact. Also, unlike with other services, the tracking on Fedex doesn't give a projected delivery date.
Hopefully we all have ours by Friday - I got an 1.42 mini with a SuperDrive - my first Real Mac (although I have a blueberry iMac - but it runs OSX pretty poorly) :)

I can understand you are frustrated, but but your delay more or less has to do with the fact that when you change BTOs, you need to cancel the order. When Apple builds machines they don't do them in the order they are received, they do them in identical batches. You gave up your slot on the BTO SD+BT build, and other people had already taken the timeslots for the BTO SD+BT+512 builds. These machines are built like this for a reason; its alot easier to do 1000 identical machines in a row, when items such as drives or ram are hand inserted, because there is less chance that you get the wrong configuration. So suck it up, face the fact that it was your screwup, and you should have ordered memory from Crucial or Kingston instead of having them change your order after the BTO order was in the system. You would have saved time and probably money as well. You know, I just don't get it... Apple is shipping early, they dont have a 3 month wait, and you are upset at them because you changed your mind. Anyone would remember from the iMac G4 (I bought one a few hours after the keynote) how it was over a month before the first unit shipped, and they were backordered forever. And of course the Mini is going to be much more popular; I'd say be happy you are still within the first 100,000 units, or you'd really be waiting.

Thats how it was when the first G4 iMacs shipped; they came from Tiawan (*sp). Of course, mine was headed towards customs in Alaska, I beleive it was identified as the second main shipment from Apple. and then all of a sudden it got a 1-day delay by turning around mid-ocean and going back to Japan. After calling Fedex and asking what was going on, they said it was a medical emergency (I doubt there are too many people on the plane, so there arent too many choices there). You can imagine how frustrating that was after waiting a month for it to ship and seeing it go the wrong direction around the world :)

I ordered on the 12th at about 8pm CST. My order is to go out "on or before 2/11" :(
I went with 1.25/40/combo/512. I'm a proud switcher (at least tester) and a first time poster. How do you think the Mini compare to my current notebook: Mobile Intel Pentium 4, 2400 MHz 400MHz external bus 512MB? Any feedback would be welcome.

Remember, On or Before is On or Before :) So don't feel too bad yet; if its 2/7 you can begin to be upset for waiting a bit. But in reality, Apple, like Dell and everyone else, tries to make a worse case scenario and tries to ship before that date.
I would have to think that will be a bit slower. I've got a Pentium M, which smokes the desktop Pentium 4. If you have the Pentium M in your notebook, then it will definately be faster. If its really a Pentium 4, they will be closer in speed; the G4 may be faster in multimedia. Overall the general responsiveness of the Mac will probably seem the same or faster just because all the elements of the UI are accelerated.

There was an original rumor that they sold 20,000, but then it got reduced to 2000. Either way, these things appear to be flying off the eShelves. According to FedEx my 512 shuffle arrives today. I can't wait. Even though my mini is small, I still don't like running with it. I should be able to just hold the shuffle in my hands.
iLife still hasn't shipped for me, but is support to ship by Friday. Really hope it ships sooner, but I won't die if it doesn't.

Hi,
I found the video on an obscure FTP (not the FTP the video is hosted on). I'm not sure if it is official but at least now we know how easy it is to open the Mac mini. Oh, and I didn't make the video.
I am definitely going to get me one of those things and put in a 7200 rpm drive and a gig of ram to juice it up a bit. I'll just order the least amount of ram possible from Apple.

I had a similar problem with my order. I decided to upgrade to the larger hard drive, but for some reason they were unable to modify the order and cancelled it to start over from scratch. Unfortunately, I had to wait for the cancellation to clear through my bank, so I couldn't order until the next morning (the 12th). In the meantime, I also decided to upgrade to the faster processor. Unlike you, though, I got a shipment notice today. Don't know why you didn't, since you must have ordered at close to the same time. I guess I did reorder first thing that morning, about 6:30 AM Pacific time.
As for the doubters, I've checked the FedEx tracking, and something has shipped, anyway.

Thats true about the shipping. I've just read some pretty good things and I'm excited like everyone else. In retrospect, I'm really glad I went for the 512, although I skimped on the other features. I should have gone 80 gigs and maybe even with the SUperdrive, but I'm scared to be bumped back down in the shipping queue. Now that we're certain we can open the case relatively safely per the video, how easy do you think future upgrades (SD, New HDD, Ram,) etc?

Based on the processor "Notes" link in this comparison (temshootouts.org/shootouts/desktop/2005/0111_dt0600.html), the 1.25 G4 is approximately equivalent to a 1.6 Ghz desktop Pentium 4, making the Mini slower than a 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4. But mobile Pentiums are not the same as desktop Pentiums--so the Mini will fare better than just 1.6 Ghz when compared to your laptop. And there are many other factors, like the video board.
Anyway, welcome! And stop back with questions when they come up. Best advice: poke through all the Preferences and View Options to find lots of power tucked away in OS X.

SuperDrive? Maybe someday. RAM? Easy. HD? I suggest a Firewire external drive: it can be 3.5" instead of the internal 2.5". That means more space cheaper, and faster rpms. Plus flexible portability and backups--AND you get to keep the original 40 too.
Or just add an iPod for extra storage :)

Hard drive will be harder, as from what I've heard it's harder to get at, plus it's a 2.5" drive, not a standard 3.5" desktop drive. I wouldn't hold my breath on upgrading the optical drive at all.

Actually, notebook components are easier to get these days; he could probably swap the hard drive out if he felt like it, but there may be some heat grease to put back on for proper cooling.
Also, the notebook CD drives that apple uses aren't Apple exclusive, he should be able to find slot-loading drives on the market that fit....in theory.

Just checked my card. Looks like Apple charged me yesterday for iLife, so I'm guessing that's set to ship as well. My wife already has a bunch of photo's set up for the new books.

Good tips. I wouldn't try to replace the HD, but I've been looking at some external drives later, and it's good to know I can up the RAM if Tiger calls for it.
I gotta say I haven't even received my Mac yet, but I'm already sold on it as the result of the sense of community in the Mac population, particularly on this board.

You should have just went with the 1.42Ghz version, and saved a couple of dollars.
I'm confused. The 512mb/80gb/AE/BT/1.25GHz deal costs US $753. The 1.42GHz version costs US $599, includes an 80GB hard drive, but is without the extra RAM, AirPort Express or Bluetooth. When these are added, the price goes to US $803. That's $50 more expensive. How could he have saved money by going with the 1.42GHz version, unless you are suggesting LinuxGigolo leaves out the RAM upgrade and the AirPort and Bluetooth?

For all of you who are concerned with the on or before date, stay cool! I was given a Oct. 10 (2003) ship date for my PM G5, but it showed up a week and a half early (Sept. 24, 2003)! Maybe you won't get the results I did, but it shouldn't be too bad.

Well, my eMac only has an 80GB drive, but I use external 160, 80, and 80 GB drives for video storage. The only problem I see with this setup on the mini is that it only has 1 FireWire port, so I can't have my camera on a separate chain from my (active) hard drive. (When capturing, I have just the cam on one port, just the 'active' hard drive on the other.)
I may very well sell the eMac for a mini, though; as I already have a 19" CRT that does 1600x1200 nicely. The only downside is that the eMac has an 8x SuperDrive, as opposed to the mini's 4x. (Oh well, it's the encoding that takes forever, anyway.)

It does have USB 2.0, so you could just get a drive supporting both FW and USB2.0.

So I ordered a BTO 1.42Ghz Mac mini (with 512MB RAM and BT) on 1/14...and my ship date is listed as "On or before 2/15"... ACK! Anyone with a similar configuration care to confirm that this is accurate? Just seems a bit long for only a couple days after it was announced....
I ordered the same spec plus a superdrive (plus a few other bits and pieces :D ) last sunday (16th) and got a ship date of the 14th Feb.
That is from the UK Apple small business store.
I'm really pleased for all you guys that are getting ship notices.....no really I am...not jealous at all ;)

The Mac mini will do just fine. It will sell in greater volume than any other mac before it simply because of the price. Even if just Mac users are the ones that are buying it.
The only problem that the Mac mini has is that it has no major function that will draw in people like the iPod did. The OS is not enough, if it was more Macs would be sold. The Mac mini needs a killer app that will make having a second computer something anyone can swallow. I hope its a TiVo-like app or a server/media player. If Apple could come up with some subscription based OS that has all the .Mac stuff and media management, it would make the mini sell as much as the iPod.

Unfortunately, it seems the first batch of Mac minis has sold out extremely fast. If you didn't order one within the first couple of hours after the keynote, you'll have to wait for the second batch being produced in East Asia.

What about iLife? The suite is still unmatched in the Windows world. Yes, there a programs that can do the same things (or even more) than iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and GarageBand but if you bought all those apps, you' end up spending hundreds of $.

Oh yeah, and my mom's mini just left Shenzhen, China!
I don't recall ever ordering a new Apple product and 1) having it ship so early after announcement, and 2) having it ship on time without being delayed. Way to go Apple!
Anyone order a Bronze Keyboard PowerBook G3 right after its announcement? Anyone remember how many months they waited for it? Ah, those were the days...

Have they arrived in store yet, or will they be arriving on the 22nd? All I want is a stock 1.25/256/40 mini. If I take a ~1h drive to Delaware, I can pick one up for $480 and no tax. I don't want to wait around until February! :P

The only problem that the Mac mini has is that it has no major function that will draw in people like the iPod did. The OS is not enough, if it was more Macs would be sold. The Mac mini needs a killer app that will make having a second computer something anyone can swallow.
First-glance draw: small size and price. Both NEW factors to the Mac world.
Second-glance draw: the OS IS enough, IF people know about it. Reliability and ease-of-use matter.
Killer app: iLife '05 has several--bundled free!
But more universally desired: the lack of viruses/spyware.
Working against all those positives: ignorance of non-Windows options and the comfort of following the herd.
Working against those negatives: the iPod, Apple style, massive Apple press presence, growing Apple mindshare, and growing awareness of Windows' flaws. Every person who sees the light bulb adds more momentum.
Conclusion: the Mac Mini IS enough to draw significant numbers of new Mac users. Some right away--but most over time as awareness snowballs. One day that critical mass will be reached when the choice to use a Mac is widely seen as "OK" and not "out there." Macs will be on the radar of the uninformed majority.
Icing on the cake: if Apple actually PROMOTES the Mac Mini and Tiger in advertising. (I'm not one who thinks ads can explain OS details effectively--but they CAN draw people to the web site.) They might wish to wait until Tiger is out and/or Mac Mini supply/demand stabilizes.

Mac OS X est un système multilingue.Voyons donc, comme si je n'avais jamais utilisé Mac OS X de ma vie! ;oP
The thing is, I like having my stuff (box, etc.) in french and honestly don't care about the delay that much. It shows that french is my first language, which can only help in maintaining french support in the future...

Er, you're off by a factor of ten or so. I heard that there were 20,000 available at the SF Apple Store on release day, sold out within hours, and they're scheduled to manufacture 500,000 a month. I'm sure hundreds of thousands are preordered at this point.Er, you heard wrong. Thanks to those who posted before me to validate what I said.

I also ordered iWork, but that hasn't shipped yet..... I imagine that this is coming from California instead of China?

Without a TV card the media center idea doesn't really work. eyeTV is nice, but I want the ability to have real-time TV (for the PS2 hooked up to it-- the 1-2 second delay doesn't really matter for regular TV).

You know this little mac would be the perfect gaming console. With wifi and bluetooth, you can have quite a few wireless controllers, it connects to the internet, and the graphics processer is pretty good.... so yah, it would be pretty cool if it was a game system. Ship a stripped down version of OSX for gaming so you didn;t have all of the aqua overhead, and I could see this working pretty good.

cool little 'puter, though. i'm just not sure the little 32MB Radeon could pump out frame rates like an Xbox. i could be wrong. i own an Xbox & a dual G4 and i've been bummed w/ the graphics on Worlds of Warcraft lately. i bought a new 128MB video card only to find that it didn't really help. it's still laggy & jittery even w/ the graphics level set low to moderate. so i have my doubts that a single G4 and a 32MB card could do any better.

Freaky.. I was JUST looking for this, too.
If you're in Canada, Future Shops sells a powered Cicero USB KVM switch for only $49.99. It's a lot cheaper than the $179 Belkin switch from the Apple store. The only big difference is that the Belkin supports audio sharing as well.
I don't really care about the video aspect, since I've got two monitors already. All I need is a way to share my Logitech MX Duo between my PC and this Mac mini. If this Cicero KVM works, it'd be sweet.
But like some other people ( :p ) I'm waiting for Tiger to ship before I buy.

If you were remembering the problems with shipping of the 2.5, your were correct to be paranoid. Many posted that they made a change in a specification on their 2.5 G5 and it delayed the shipping date significantly. Kudos to Apple, they learned from past mistakes.

Ship a stripped down version of OSX for gaming so you didn;t have all of the aqua overhead, and I could see this working pretty good.
It's not a high-end 3D board in the Mini so don't expect the highest detail in the latest games... but it's higher-end than some 3D boards I've had a LOT of fun with! We'll have to see how it tests. But don't worry about Aqua. It seems to have no overhead when not actively in use.
cool little 'puter, though. i'm just not sure the little 32MB Radeon could pump out frame rates like an Xbox.
I have my doubts as well. But the CPU is certainly faster than an X-Box.
One thing to keep in mind when comparing a computer to a console: the console puts out LOW QUALITY video: 640x480, non-anti-aliased. And typically lower-res textures than we expect on a computer too. It gets away with that because TVs are blurry, and we don't EXPECT better on TV. IN addition, TVs only have 30 frames/60 fields per second--any framerates better than that offer no visible benefit.
So consoles "have it easy" in some ways. If you saw the SAME quality as X-Box (Halo, say) on a nice computer monitor, you wouldn't think it was so great. If your Mac Mini achieves close to the same quality... you won't think that's so great, either!
The answer, of course, is to run your Mac Mini to TV so the burriness hides the defects just like with a console. Get that $19 TV adapter from Apple and enjoy the big size. Even my old PowerBook G3, 333 Mhz with 16 VRAM, looks surprisingly good running "older" 3D games to TV! Better than on its own screen because I no longer "notice" the low res I'm forced to settle for. (And my PowerBook G4 1.25 GHz makes UT2004 look just amazing on TV! 64 VRAM though, better than the Mini.)
(And regardless of how the image detail looks compared to anything else, the game PLAY can still be fun!)
PS, my iLife '05 just shipped :D

Have any other mini orders placed on the 11th not shipped yet? My 1.42/512/AE BTO has yet to ship and I ordered a few hours after the keynote.
Sadly I screwed up and added Overnight shipping along with a keyboard that I said to bundle all items into one shipment.
My order is still open and expected to ship on or before 1/21. I understand its my mistake for ordering 'costly' extras, yet with this being my first new Mac in over a decade how am I supposed to be aware of Apple's new product release/shipping choas. I'm sure I can wait a few extra days as its not the end of the world. I just can't help but feel slightly cheated if others who opted for the free ground shipping got it a little earlier.

I just can't help but feel slightly cheated if others who opted for the free ground shipping got it a little earlier.
Apple actually doesn't specify what its free shipping is (ground, air, camel, otherwise). Part of the reason for this is because they offer free shipping on seemingly all orders above $50 and products such as Mac mini and iMac G5 are air freighted from China/Taiwan. What that means is that 'free shipping' is effectively, at least immediately after hardware product release, usually by air and will get there VERY quickly.
And don't feel bad -- mine shipped, but the tracking number doesn't work. Fedex's site has said since yesterday early evening
" No scan record for the following shipments has been received by our system yet. Please try again later or contact Customer Service."
Hopefully they just forgot to scan it.

I've seen Fedex do this before. In fact, when I got something shipped from NewEgg, it left and returned to Newark like 5 times before it finally made its way to Pittsburgh. Fortunately, it also wasn't delayed... it just had a lot of odd arrival/departure scans....
... though.. maybe yours had to go back to China to pick mine up since mine apparently hasn't ever been actually 'shipped' (Fedex has nothing about the tracking #)

I ordered mine at about the same time, basically same config (no AE), and it hasn't shipped either. No accessories, free shipping. When I placed the order, the screen said "for delivery on Jan 22nd", but I guess that meant for shipment before Jan 22nd . . . Maybe I'll go stand in line at the Apple store at 7am on Sat and buy another one.

Remember, Shenzen, China, is 15 hours ahead of us (Eastern Time). The shipment left China at 7:09 PM on 1/19/2005 LOCAL TIME. The packages arrived in Anchorage and left there at 2:09 PM on 1/9/2005 LOCAL TIME, which is 6:09 PM Eastern Time.
Mine is on the same flight as all the others. I hope they're enjoying the ride!
BTW, mine still says it's to be delivered by 10:30 am on Friday, Jan 21st! :D

I kinda wonder if there's a difference in delivery time based on if it's being delivered to a business or residence. Apple asks when you place the order, so I wonder if the people with projected delivery dates of Monday are getting it shipped to a house and those with Friday to a business. Wouldn't surprise me...

I don't know, but my mini shipped early this morning. So far, FedEx has not updated its status page. I purchased directly from Apple, specifically because of the "promise" that it would be delivered by the 22nd. Apparently, its not looking that way...
I placed my order for a 1.42Ghz mini with AirPort & Bluetooth within 20 minutes after the keynote... as soon as the Apple Store came online. I called and confirmed with Apple after I placed my order, and was assured that the mini would be delivered before or on the 22nd---so will see.

Some FedEx glitch I think--they can't ALL be forgetting to scan.

I hope you're right about the missed scan. They're shipping thousands of these things. I ordered a BTO 1.42 minutes after the keynote. I got the shipment notification this morning, but the tracking number still isn't showing up in FedEx tracking. The thing is, I like having my stuff (box, etc.) in french and honestly don't care about the delay that much. It shows that french is my first language, which can only help in maintaining french support in the future...
On ne pouvait pas le savoir en te lisant. Yes, I see your point, but couldn't be sure you knew about it or not. I do a lot of Mac tech support and most new users, and some old ones too, don't know the first thing about multilingual support.
I did write to the canadian iTMS about the non-existent French music support though. Je fais ma part :).

I suspect that the .Mac update scheduled for Saturday is related to iLife '05? Here's hoping the previous rumor of 1 GB .mac space updates (vs. 250 MB now) are also true and will show up on Sunday morning.
Ya, I really hope Apple upgrades the .Mac accounts to 1GB . As it stands now, .Mac is a major ripoff. You can get 250MB with hotmail or 1GB with gmail ... FREE! Why pay $100 bucks for the other less used features?
If 1GB does materialize on .Mac, I'll sign up and cancel my website and email hosting service and just move it to .Mac .
As for the Mac Mini. I think it's a waste of money at this point.
I have an Airport Express, OSX Tiger and iLife05 on my shopping list right now. I might as well wait until Tiger ships. At that point, I'll get the Mac Mini, which I can use as my WiFi transmitter for my PowerBook and it comes with Tiger and iLife05 for free.
I calculcated things, and I figured that I'll be saving CAD$420 bucks by buying the mini instead of all the seperate products. I'll pay just another CAD$300 or so for a Mac Mini.
But I think I'll be patient and wait til the summer where I'm sure Steve will announce a progression of the Mac Mini to perhaps include better media center capabilities built in such as S-Video and a remote controler.
I got it all strategized :D

except for the high-def graphics & surround sound...
cool little 'puter, though. i'm just not sure the little 32MB Radeon could pump out frame rates like an Xbox. i could be wrong. i own an Xbox & a dual G4 and i've been bummed w/ the graphics on Worlds of Warcraft lately. i bought a new 128MB video card only to find that it didn't really help. it's still laggy & jittery even w/ the graphics level set low to moderate. so i have my doubts that a single G4 and a 32MB card could do any better.
G4 bus speed is horrendously slow... :(

S-video and composite video output to connect directly to a TV or projector (requires Apple DVI to Video Adapter, sold separately)
The MiniMac already supports S-Video....

Let's put it this way, my PB is my first Mac. Before that I was on Win machines for 15 years. I never bought a copy of Windows or anything from Microsoft for that matter.

I am grateful that the eMacs have been discontinued. They are heavy! eMacs were just leftover pieces of G4 components and old faithful CRTs Apple just had to get rid of. CRTs just has to go. I'm glad they didn't decide on a G5 eMac... cause what's the point right? the iMac does all of that.
A budget Mac computer would be.. yes... the Mac Mini's. Good idea to 1) attract switchers with keyboards, mouse, and display... 2) use all of their G4 components (1.25 G4s).... 3) Push the LCD market and stop serving CRTs.... 4) prove that PCs aren't the only one making small ass computers. Schools will be using the iMac if needed as a eMac replacement. Mini Macs will be used to help support 3rd party LCD Screen companies and also help sell Mac's own LCDs. PowerMac G5 are at a low sale compared to the iMac, PowerBook, and iBooks. Which means, even if PowerMacs are sold well, the LCDs are definitely aren't selling too well comparatively. They needed to get that LCD market going. So it was a great job making the Mac Mini in an Aluminum casing maching a possible 20" Apple display. Plus the DVI cable, which kinda suggests... hmm it's a perfect fit for an Apple display.
Mac Mini's totally serve a "cool" factor... "Really it's that small?" or "my goodness the Cube idea is coming back and i'm sure you can stick a mac mini underneath a G4 Cube (WHICH YOU CAN!!)". But the specs or an eh... but lets not be too greedy here... it's a G4 1.25!! remember when you had a G4 500 and you were like... dude only a G4 1ghz can handle my graphics and record my music and do some good video editing.... IT does just that! With the specs which lies inbetween iBook and Powerbook, this is a powerful machine!
Expect some cool 3rd party addons i'm sure. With EyeTV gettin all famous with it's media center thang, i'm totally sure they will make a mini EyeTV mocking the same shape of the Mac Mini fitting perfectly underneath making your Mac Mini an Entertainment Center (aka... the presumed iHome). Imagine, a Mac Mini as your entertainment Center... that's insane! And a great look under your 42" LCD "silver" (must be matching), TV Screen. Bluetooh remote control... HD... It's going to be as hot as an iTrip on your iPod.
Mac Mini is going to be huge... or will be.

Doesn't a single user licence agreement, those supplied with the most basic version of OS', allow the software to be installed on as many machines as the user wishes, so long as only one version is running at anyone time?
For someone who works for a software company, I suggest you take the time to read the EULA
I suggest that you follow your own advice...
Here's the SLA for Panther:
http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/macosxpanther.html
2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
A. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time.
This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time.
You can find the Apple SLA's at http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/
Of particular note is the "Family Pack" license for 5 OS X installations.
http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/macosxfamily.html
Mac OS X Family Pack
ADDENDUM to Software License Agreement for Mac OS X
The first and second sentences of Section 2A of the Software License Agreement for Mac OS X are revised as follows:
A. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-labeled computers at a time as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that same household. By "household" we mean a person or persons who share the same housing unit such as a home, apartment, mobile home or condominium, but shall also extend to student members who are primary residents of that household but residing at a separate on-campus location. This license does not extend to business or commercial users.
The remainder of this Section 2 and all other terms and conditions of this Agreement remain in full force and effect.
It's also interesting that the above license specifically includes students while at university, but the Apple Store says that the family pack
"license does not extend to students who reside at a separate on-campus location or to business or commercial users."

Alright. I have it shared on my kvm with my pc, and it works amazing well. Since my kvm was ps2, I had to purchase a belkin ps2->usb adapter, but it all works great.
This new mac is very cool. Although it is very small, the external power supply is actually about 1/4 the size of the whole computer.
Amazingly fast as well.

Woohoo. I finally got my shipped confirmation from Apple this morning saying that it was shipped yesterday. I picked the free ground shipping, but Apple upgraded it to Overnight Priority for free, so it's gonna be there in 1.5 hours. Odd thing is that mine shipped from Ontario, California!!! I guess they have a stash of stock machines(I ordered the $599 model) being shipped from local locations?

I'm upset I didn't order mine right away. I was worried about being able to add ram myself. So, I waited until Monday(01/17) to order. That was when I finally decided I'd be able to get into it. The next day, of course, I see the video of the guy opening it. So, I was right the whole time that I could get into it.
Why didn't I order it right away?!?! I was configuring it as soon as the Apple Store came back online after the keynote, but was worried about the ram. :(
One thing I did get yesterday is the 1 gig ram from Crucial. I probably would have waited to order it if I knew the estimated ship date was in February. :( :( :( :(

A question for those lucky people who have a Mac mini already:
Does iLife 05 come on a seperate DVD in the box, or is it preinstalled and hidden away on the Software Restore disk (I assume there is one of those in the box)?
Just wondering about how easy it will be to install iLife 05 on my main Mac - I'm not likely to use it on the mini because it'll be acting as a server, and will only have a TV for output.

Apple shipments have confused me before. When I ordered a Powerbook last year, it was shipped from China to Ontario, CA to the midwest and back to me in Los Angeles! I live 40min. away from Ontario, why ship it elsewhere? Heck, I would have driven there to pick it up!

Someone posted pictures of them opening their mini box above. 2 of the pictures had an iLife '05 CD sitting on the top. I'm assuming that CD came with the box and the guy hadn't bought it seperately.

I just ordered:
Mac mini 1.25GHz,512MB DDR333 SDRAM, 40GB Ultra ATA drive,
SuperDrive, AirPort Extreme and BlueTooth Card.
This is just after getting a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop computer last summer.
I'm impressed with their hardware and operating system. I used to be a mac hater until I accidentily walked into an Apple store 3 years ago , and after I realzed where I was, started walking out until I saw the ibook and OS X.
It was love at first site. Haven't looked back since though I still love Dell too. But I think this mini model will put me there now. It will replace my desktop PC at home and I plan on using 100% Macintosh now!
Can't wait!

I'm a quasi-switcher as I'm reMacing (I've been using Macs since I was a wee one in the 80s, but stopped having access to one when I graduated and moved a few years ago), and I must say I'm not feeling the surfeit of warm fuzzies I was hoping for.

Well, Apple & FedEx have lost my Mac mini. Just got off the phone with the Apple Store, and the tracking number on my Apple Invoice and Shipping E-Mail do not match. The Apple Store is not sure as to which tracking number is legit, the one on my invoice actually does work with FedEx's website and shows a package coming from China to IN. However, they are cautious as to if that is actually my package or not. Go figure, the Apple Store is going to contact FedEx, and see whats going on.
No Mac mini for me tommorow that is for sure.

Just got a shipping notice for my mini around noon. Stock 1.42/80/Combo configuration.
Origin is Middletown PA. I guess Apple has been stockpiling off-the-shelf models for a while now.
Eitherway, FedEx says delivery tomorrow by 4:30 [standard remarks for me, they usually come mid-day] ('paid' for Free Shipping, shows as Express Overnite. Thanks Apple!).

Can anyone confirm that I can actually use this with a TV as my monitor? I spoke with the genius here at the Apple Store and he told me I could. I know you COULD use it to view photos and video, but I want it to use as my only "everyday" monitor. Some have said that the text is blurry, if that's the case, then it's pointless to use. I received mine this morning, well at least one of mine. Funny thing was - was the FedEX gal was looking through here stuff for a good couple of minutes. When she came to the door she asked if there was supposed to be another package? I said I ordered two but according to Apple only one shipped. The package said 1 of 1, but she said it had a master invoice or something like that that led her to believe there should be another package. She said she had another one in the truck, but that it was for someone else around the corner! Guess I'll see if my other one ships here in the next day or so...
Some observations...
- Unit is really tiny, but power brick is kinda big.
- Very quiet in normal use, but got quite a bit louder when running Handbrake ;-)
- Seems quite snappy performance wise. My numbers were almost exactly what barefeats.com posted except my video scores were all about 10% higher.
- This is still with 256MB... going to try to open it up here in a bit to put in a bigger stick.
- not specific to the Mac mini, but VGA sucks on my Dell 20" LCD. MUCH MUCH better in DVI... guess I'll have to get a DVI switchbox rather than an VGA one (I was then just going to manually switch the inputs on the Display but use the switchbox to switch my keyboard mouse).

Opening the case was just as described/shown in the video. It is a little tricky the first time, makes a disconcerting sound, and leaves some scrap plastic - but works.
Replacing the memory was very easy, although the one side of the DIMM clip is blocked from going completely down (to pop out the DIMM) by the shied in the back. It still came out ok.
The hardest part I found was putting the case back together... The first dozen or so tries I kept getting the back not lined up properly. The shielding was not slipping behind the case easily. This might have been made worse by the Airport Antenna hookup. I found that putting it back together all sides at a time worked much better rather than trying to do the front or back first...
Also remember to blow out any of the scrap plastic that is formed when opening the case...

Speaking of AI, should this bit in their report today trouble me?
...the first batch of minis to leave Foxconn's manufacturing facilities in Asia are reportedly running a custom build of Mac OS X 10.3.7 (build 7T21).
This is the first I've heard of this...does it mean anything in regards to upgrading to 10.3.8 or Tiger when the time comes? Or is this standard for new models introduced between OS releases?

Not to worry. when they package any new machine, they have to cutoff the software at some point-- so this is just necessary for any given production run.
The first thing that happens when you boot your mini is it checks software update for all the latest fixes/versions-- apply these and you are running the current level of Apple software,
As others have said-- Tiger runs just fine (I would expect it to)

Not quite sure on the size, I'd say its around a 32 inch. My brother sold it to me for an insanely good deal when he bought his 42 inch HD widescreen. :)
My tv isn't high def, but its resolution is definately better than any tv I have looked at. It's a Panasonic. I'll have to find some more info on it. I'd say it's probably about 2 years old.

I wonder how they would handle this in an airport where they ask you to turn on your laptop. If there is no screen, how can they tell it's a functioning computer?

Just finished an iMovie of unpacking my Mac Mini... using the Mini, of course!
It's on my .Mac site here: http://homepage.mac.com/timnolte/iMovieTheater23.html.
Edit: Realized the text on the software CD packet isn't quite legible. It reads, "Designed by Apple in California." I didn't show it in the video, but the picture on the front of the box has a caption which reads, "Actual Size." :D
Nice job with the QuickTime Movie. Thank you for sharing Tim. ;)

GOT MINE!
Setup was quite simple, and I'm playing with it now. One (positive) error: It appears that the maximum resolution when using VGA is 1920 x 1200, not 1920 x 1080 as originally claimed. And it flawlessly picked up my Microsoft USB wireless keyboard and mouse, which was nice.
More news to follow as I continue investigating...

Upgrading the memory.
Got the MacMini yesterday, and successfully upgraded my memory to 1GB. Went to Fry's and got a PC2700 1GB module. The brand is Patriot Memory, and the price was 169.99 (sku 4083642 for those that care).
Getting the case open was tricky. I gave up 3 times before I got the courage to do it. You do use a putty knife as in the video, but your really need a couple of butter knives to hold open the areas you have already pry'd up.
Once open, the memory came out easy, and it was easy to put in the replacement one.
Getting the case closed, was just as tricky as opening it. There are metal fingers all along the back side where the accessories plug in, and they are very hard to line up. It took me about 15 minutes to close it, but once I finally got it. I was set.
Fired it up, and it now shows 1GB in the system information - and by the way, it is MUCH faster.

Thanks, cool video! Reminds me of unpacking my iBook... Walking to the front door everytime I thought the delivery van stopped at the front of my house... Saying "Thanks!" to the delivery guy, who replied "Have fun with it"... Feeling butterflies in my stomach while opening the box... Aaah...
I think I'll buy a Mini at the end of this year, when I return from my internship abroad. I've already pictured myself walking into an Apple store, asking "I would like to buy a Mini Mac please", paying out in cash, putting it in my backpack, taking it home, opening box....
What a geek I am...

I'd have to disagree..... especially since I am typing this on my mini that is hooked up to me tv. I, personally, have no problems with it at all. Looks fine to me.
The reason text is not as sharp on regular TVs is because regular TVs use an "interlaced scan" to render the display. Each frame is actually split into two parts that requires two cycles to display. All odd numbered horizontal lines are drawn to the screen first, then on the next pass, the even numbered horizontal lines are drawn. This two-pass, line fill-in approach is what makes text look blurry.
On computer monitors and HDTV (with progressive scan), the lines on the screen are all drawn continuously (from top to bottom) in one pass. This "progressive scan" is what makes text and video look sharp.
The Mac Mini provides two video connections: S-video and composite. These are both interlaced scan technologies. S-video provides a better picture than the composite connector (due to better color separation), but neither come close to the computer/HDTV displays we are accustomed to with progressive scan. In other words, expect blurry text.
It would be great if Apple offered a progressive scan component video cable (like progressive scan DVD players do). If they did, you'd be able to hook your Mac Mini up to an HDTV and get a display comparable to a computer monitor.

I think you forgot the two video connections that come out of the box: DVI and VGA.

This is my first brand new Mac, after years of buying used. I ordered it on Friday night with Apple Credit and I am down right giddy. I do not know what to expect. They are saying 3-4 weeks with a five day ship; which I hope will be shorter.

I'd like to see a thread where people could list the day they ordered and the day they received their Mac Mini. This way we could tell where Mac stood on shipments.

Search forum for the older iMac G5 Now Shipping thread. Might want to have some antacids on hand.

I have a shipping date of 11 Feb and no shipping notice yet (and none expected till at least the 4th Feb). You'll just have to be patient and wait!

I ordered on the eve of Jan 12 and like all non US apple store customers, have a Jan 28th ship date. Anyone in Europe or Canada receive their shipping notice yet ?
Now my Bluetooth keyboard apparently already shipped on the 12th although I have yet to see it. It shipped via "Same Day Right Away". I cant find this company anywhere on the web to take a look at what is up with my package.
