This is unacceptable, if it was free it would run into the nearest forest or wooded area. It jumping onto whom ever is a sign of self-defense, nothing more. Exotic such as these should never be captured to begin with let alone placed in ZOO's for our enjoyment (that is the reason I have never visited a zoo). Trying to breed them in captivity is a touchy area some would agree some would not, since its the adverse effects of humanity destroying these animals habitat to being with.

I would also get my self checked for rabies since it seems you have gotten bitten.

Sorry, I'm a little confused.

So because I have a Prime Minister (London is in England) who is engaged in an unpopular war, I'm therefore prohibited from expressing my opinion on matters of animal cruelty? I'm still at a loss to see how the two are mutually exclusive.

Er... will that be the English Prime Minister, the American or the Russian president you're refering to?? And yes, if I ever meet any of them I will definitely raise the matter of civilian casualties, instead of filming them with my handicam!

Considering animal cruelty, though, I must applaude the idea of santa riding a donkey. The reindeer would probably break their back if he went and sat on them....

Very cool place to see clever apes is Gibralter. The "Gibralter Rock Apes" are Barbary apes that will jump all over, into cars, on tourists, etc. and will steal any food items you might have. My wife and I saw them steal ice cream from kids, food out of cars - crazy. Those apes are amazing and not chained at all.

There is more than London, England. Here in the US we have the following states with a place called London:

Maybe we need a time out for any postings on MR, since name calling seems to be a new sport. :D

I don't understand how this is mistreatment of an animal. There are lots of asian countries where it is acceptable to have a monkey as a pet. They leashed him to the pole so that he would not infringe on other people's rights. I think that is rather kind, and allowing him to be outside is kind too. Maybe they should have shoved him in a tiny cage or box in the back. Dogs are our pets, we leash them up. Monkeys are their pets, they leash them up. No one said he is there ALL the time, and if he is then that would be kind of cruel. Besides in this country we have commercial of monkeys riding on top of dogs delivering burritos. No one seems to care about that. He is a pet! He is leashed for other people protection, and he was healthy and was not being harmed. Just because you don't think monkeys should be pets doesn't mean having them as a pet is cruelty. How is the monkey being harmed?? Morality of owning a monkey and cruelty of a monkey are too different issues.

Nicely put. Note well that the monkey also has a harness and not a choker chain - a much crueler device and something we use allot to control our dogs.

There are cultural differences as well as issues of relative animal intelligence issues that are quite complex and ill defined in these sorts of debate.

I notice also there are cultural differences in the treatment of women e.g. in Saudi and some African countries its perfectly normal to stone a woman accused of adultery to death.Doesn't change anything its disgusting. So is chaining a monkey to a bar.The method of restraint means nothing its the restraint thats the crime.

Ok, lets be clear, we are talking about animals with the exception of human beings for one. If your going to use examples then stick to animals which is the topic please else we are dealing with a competely different issue. I dont like the implication that by supporting the view that this monkey at a bar isn't a huge ethical black mark, lumps me in with some of the worst atrocities against fellow human beings that exist. These issues are worlds apart.

As for crime, well maybe where you actually live it is. But the law where that monkey is appears to be different.

As to restraint being a crime, then I assume you are against dogs and other animals being on a leash as well...

Remember in the western world we have been not only restraining animals for millennia, we have made then hunters (killing other animals as is their nature - carnivore after all) and beasts of burden. Horses, oxen and dogs have all be major beasts of burden, forced to be harnessed for many hours and carry loads for most of their lives with metal plates hammered into their toe nails/hooves (dogs excepted here) to handle the unnatural surfaces of roads we have forced them onto along with noxious fumes from cars etc etc. Oh, and all these activities are still perfectly acceptable.

Just so you know I am not an animal hater, if I owned a bar I wouldn't be harnessing a monkey to it for part of the day to entertain customers...but I don't think someone who does is evil...

Some dogs as in Samoyeds where once wild dog and came willingly came into villages because of food and heat from fires. The villagers adopted them as pet and bread them to be strong and nice so that they would pull sleds. Their is more but I am tried.

1. the chain was so short it would hang the monkey by his ribs until he could scramble back up, if he ever fell off... doesn't sound pleasant. Spinal injury or suffocation might be a blessing, considering

2. look at how scratched up that post is. that's not an animal that's simply tethered for a few minutes a day. I'd guess it spends 6-12 hours there, "entertaining" guests.

if you had a dog or cat chained up there, i would call it animal cruelty then too. leashing an animal for a walk is different than tying it to a counter in a restaurant.
