View Full Version : Anyone wear cologne often?
Abstract
Jan 26, 2005, 10:08 AM
Anyone here wear cologne often, say on a daily basis? It doesn't have to be cologne, I guess, just something that makes you smell "better". Not sure if Axe counts, but I guess it could.
I have a Tommy Hilfiger "Freedom" cologne set from years ago, and I never wear it. However, I have met people who say they wear something every day, and yet I can't smell it. But I've seen girls ask these people, "Are you wearing cologne?" because they're not dressed up or anything, and yet they smell good.
Would you recommend wearing something everyday, or does it just seem cheesy, like you're trying too hard?

well it depends on what kind of cologne it is. If its really subtle I think it can be used daily.

Funnily enough that's one of the ones my wife really dislikes....sorry. But then as she's my wife she won't be one of the ones you're trying to impress ;)
As for the original question. I only wear some sometimes and then not a lot.

I used to but not anymore, why cover up all those pheromones :D
Actually one of my biggest turnoffs is women or men who seem to shower with cologne. There have been a couple of times when I've had to leave a room because of it.

I am a cologne whore, but wear it in moderation.
My most used one is Presence by Mont Blanc.
Then its Jill Sander for Men
Then its Givenchy pour Homme
Then its 212 by Herrera,
Then its something by Gucci,
and so on, and so on.
If I want to recall a certain part of my life, or how I felt, I just put on the cologne I wore at the time. Instant time travel. ;)

Ralph Lauren Romance or RL Romance Silver (for men). They both work nicely. An ex from many moons ago once bought me a bottle of Tommy Hilfiger Freedom, but wearing it made me feel so...redneck-ghetto (if that makes any sense). The Romance(s) usually draw a compliment or two, but not as much as when I'm brave enough to wear my kilt out in public ;)

I uh, don't wear cologne :D but I bought a manly mountain "body splash" from Bath and Body Works for my boyfriend. It smells really good, and it's not too strong at all. He also uses a shaving cream from Nivea that smells nice.
Other girls have commented to him how good he smells. I don't know if I should be jealous. ;)

Not on a daily basis, I had used CK One last year and left it without reason, I mean, I don't need it at all, but I got a new one as present ;) and now use it when... you know , my girl wears on a daily basis, not a lot just what she needs and what I need... :)

Cool, so there are some men do that often.
Now, I realize that Hilfiger Freedom is supposed to be utter crap, but how do you tell if a cologne is good?
Also, if you're wearing it every day, do you wear one that's sporty and fruity, or one that's more formal??

As far as I've read, every skin is different -Pretty obvious  - and each one has to select his own cologne, I don't give them as gift if I don'T know which one he/she uses, that may not be random, life may but not the smell, ;).
And according to your sign. :p

I think it depends on you, Abstract. I would find it odd if a guy in a plain t-shirt and jeans was wearing some expensive-smelling cologne. However, if you dress "metrosexually" or in button-down shirts most of the time, I think it's probably always ok to have a light-mild cologne on. :) Maybe something between sporty and formal. Maybe take a look at the men's stuff at Bath and Body Works -- it's not too expensive, and it smells very nice. :)

Go cologne shopping with a woman. If it's a friend (really a friend...not a potential girlfriend) then they'll be pretty honest with you.

I never wear cologne. I can't remember the last time I came across a cologne that I thought smelled good. I do use aftershave sometimes, mostly for skin conditioning reasons. Even I found one that I did like, I can't imagine wearing it every day. Dates, parties, certain occasions, I think.
I also don't care all that much about perfume on a woman either, so I guess I'm not much into fragrances. As long as she doesn't have too much on, of course. As long as my eyes aren't watering, I could care less how much cologne another guy has on. I'm not trying to get with him. :p

I occasionally wear cologne. I have Stetson, which I sometimes wear, and some stuff in a black bottle that I've had for years (I think it's something by Calvin Klein).
I used to work with a lady that occasionally wore a particular brand of perfume. I don't know what it was, but when she wore it, my eyes would water and my eyes, nose and throat would all swell up and I couldn't breathe, until I moved away from her. I could tell when she wore it because it smelled like rat poison to me. Get a whiff, and I'm somewhere else  . All her other perfumes didn't bother me. Just the one.
edit: I think the cologne is called Drakknoire

Cologne = Eau de Toilette, to my understanding. I have couple of those as well as Eau de Parfum (which lasts longer and is more concentrated than the above).
- Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue
- Yves Saint Laurent Baby Doll
- Chanel Chance
- and something by Escada
I find that I don't always remember to put it on so it's gathering dust on my windowsill at the moment. ;)

I am a geek. I do not shower long enough that I produce my own smell. :p My computer doesn't seem to care. Neither does my Windoze computer-- it crashes no matter what I smell like. And the various bits and pieces of electronic equipment like the natural oils... less chance of ESD (electrostatic discharge).

How I pick cologne? Of course, my girlfriend tells me what she likes but I'll try a sample at the store and if I like it when I'm done shopping, then I'll buy it. Never buy it on the spot.
I use 212, Armani Mania and Issey Miyaki (only recently after getting a handful of samples last time I bought 212). Nothing but compliments on the latter.

I wear cologne every day – I have so many different kinds I don’t know where to start (I travel overseas at least 3 times a year on business or holiday and always pick some different cologne up). I think I have about 30-35 kinds – all open – they don’t go ‘off’ if kept out of direct sunlight.
My favorites at the moment (and some other MacRumer-ers have indicated the same…are we that close a community we share the same computers and cologne!?!) I may get the names and spelling wrong as I am at work but my cologne bottles aren’t
Mont Blanc – forget the name, but a cool bottle
Kenneth Cole.- Black
Gucci – Rush
Tommy – Freedom and T
212 (along with body wash and shampoo)
Calvin Klein – Truth
Estelle Lauder – Paradise for Men
Givency – forget the name
Hugo Boss – Blue and the one in a round vaporizer
Bvlgari – the spelling is off, but there is a V in there somewhere
That’s all for now……I must smell if I need that much stuff!!

You have to try at least 2 girls, 1 a good friend, you know you are not planning a night with her and she will tell you how sweet/sour/whatever it is, then your girlfriend, she will tell you if she likes it for special times... then you decide...
I went once shopping with a friend a good girl, I met her 10 years ago and have never thought about a date or something more than just talk, she gave me a good cologne, I did like it but my girlfriend at that time told me she didn't like it completely because it didn't give enough "fire" for ;), she couldn't stand it, then I decided one by myself and both my friend and my girl were pretty happy with it. Maybe it was teenagers thing...

Anyone here wear cologne often, say on a daily basis?
I do and I'd reccomend it.
My Grandmother told me that if you wear a scent it becomes a signature that people associate with you and she was right. She had a lightly scented face cream and if I smell it on anyone I immediately think of her.
In my experienc, if it's not overpowering women like it. If it's great women love it. I wear Chanel 'Pour Homme' and Hermes 'Oranges'. Like shaving - it's a small thing that men can do to show they care without seeming over-concerned (hair gel falls into the over-concerned category in my view).
I generally stay away fromt he newest stuff because you'll either end up smelling like everyone else or they'll stop making it and you'll be stuffed.

Rarely. I used to wear it more but is seems have become a bit of social taboo to wear cologne in public places (ie buses, classrooms, and workplaces). I guess with an increase in the number of people with environmental sensitivities, not wearing it if you know you are going to be in contact with a lot of people is the preferred way to go. As for me, I save the light splash of cologne just for those 'special occasions.' ;)

Clinique Happy every day, it's pretty subtle but most people really like it anyway, since it's a light scent... i like it because it covers the smell of all the lotion and perfume other people wear. i also like Romance by Ralph Lauren but haven't worn it in a few years.
The most important thing in choosing a cologne is how well it mingles with your body's own scent. I don't mean BO, it's something else. If it clashes, it will seem awkward and people won't respond well. If it goes well, as was said, people will associate the scent with you... scent is tied to memory, so if used properly, it's a good way to make a lasting impression.

Cool, I didn't know that picking a cologne was personal. I always thought that a good cologne would smell good on everybody.
Seems like everyone is saying CK-one, so it must be pretty safe. Hugo blue is another popular one according to the posts in this thread. Issey Miyake.....no complaints either.
I'll try'em all out. I guess I should bring a girl along, but it seems weird to ask a girl to go cologne shopping.

Don't do CK one. There is no such thing as "safe" cologne, only trendy, overused stuff.
Go to a mall or a perfume outfit (Sephora, etc.) and smell a few. Of, course don.t put it on yourself. Take breaks, and smell the coffee they have sitting out to cleans the palette.
Once you have a few favorites, see if they have samples you can take. If not, put just a touch on yourself (on wrist and rub onto neck, or spray some and walk into it). This very subtle amount should then settle in. You want to create the effect that you had it on all day long.
There is a 180º difference between smelling it out of the bottle and smelling it on yourself. LEt your girl/boyfriend or mom smell it.
Your body chemistry reacts differently to the ingredients in certain colognes so you need to find one that's you.
Yes, I am metrosexual. :)

Don't wear it because a) why would I want to smell like everyone else that picked the same brand, and b) how do I know in advance what scent the person I would like to meet likes? Your chances are that the cologne will be as much a turn off as a turn on. What's wrong with being yourself, minus b.o., of course.
