Yet another avatar thread. I was just wondering how many of the users with avatars made their own avatar.
my first few were made myself...
(see attachment..)
however, i saw mine on marathon.bungie.org and could not resist using it as a 'tar.
i gave credit accordingly.. ;)

ha, this is a good one - I think since I've been on mac rumors, there has been an explosion in avatars - I might have made more than anyone else, but there are some truly slick ones out there now.
I can't wait to see what the next avatar contest give us.

The Apple was meant to move like that. It adds some personality. I'm just amazed I was able to keep it that high quality and keep it 20k.

Mine is simple so far. A little work in Illustrator and I had something that resembled the logo I created for my "almost a company".
I have no real motivation yet to animate it in any way. Perhaps, making the ring spin around the Saka character would be good.

Duran, how many frames was it?
I used Strata 3D Base, Photoshop, and GIF Builder to create my 3D avatar. It took about 4 hours of work, and 72 whole entire frames! The image is only 16K.
And, in case you couldn't tell, it's original, because it's a tad shaky. :p

It's 15 frames. My objective was to keep the colors intact, the quality of color is a lot more important to mine. How many colors did you use?

I think I used either the "Best pallete (sp)" option or a 6^3 pal. option. I also used frame optimization, which usually is helpful for any animation with more than 70 frames or so. :p

It looks like it has about 10 colors.

The main reason I didn't use Image Ready is I didn't have Image Ready with me when I did the avatar on vacation with OS 9. :D
But I'm glad I used GIFB., because I am not sure if I could have gotten all 72 frames to under 20K using IR.

I'd have to differ with you there - I've used GifBuilder and Image Ready - and IR blows GifBuilder out of the water in all aspects of creating/optimizing animated gifs - I now use it all the time and won't ever go back to GB.
If you can't do something in IR then you just don't know how to do it. I recommend learning it if you want to make good looking tars. And I don't think you need 72 frames, that's a bit much.

I know how to make animations in ImageReady. It's somewhat easy. And I know that ImageReady is MUCH better than GB, but I only had GB on me when I made the avatar.
I wanted to use 72 frames, so it looks super-smooth. But, as long as it's done, it's obviously done.
When I made the cobra/name/sig avatar animations I used ImageReady.
Mr. Anderson
Sep 7, 2002, 10:38 AM
well, the colors in your avatar are a little screwed up so it blinks - in order to smooth out the image colors here's a little trick I used to use when working with GB.
take a good sampling of all the images in your animation - say 5-10 frames that have all the colors shown throughout the animation - open them all and then create a new image that can hold all the images (if you're doing a tar - 4 images would be 100x100, 6 would be 100x150 or 150x100, etc.) then flatten it and save it as a gif - getting all the images to look as good as possible. This you will use as your colormap for the animation.
Then in GB load this image as the custom color map and voila! You have a nicely optimized animation.

I may work on that one day. But I am also trying to think of what new avatar I should put in the meantime. I think I'm going to drop the 3D "KC" theme, along with any cobras/sigs/names and move on to something more personal. I'll probably use something that I find important to me or a desire, which usually shows the most heart, anyways.
I'll work on something...

Yeah, I could take about 1/3 of the frames out, maybe...but the colors would be tough. That's a 128 color palette, and anything less looked horrible.

I ripped the scene from the DVD (thanks to some handy tools from jelloshotsrule), opened it in QT and exported as "Image Sequence", then opened the images and cropped and resized them in PS (thank god for actions). Put them all in one folder, and then imported them into IR using import "Folder as Frames".

if you look at the entire animation though there are flashes throughout, both at the beginning and end of the animation.
it would be hard to work out all of the flashes without affecting the smoothness of the animation.

Naw, I was looking at the animation in IR. Each flash is only 1 frame and removing them doesn't affect the smoothness of the animation. It's really only about 6 frames but they make the color palette a lot larger then it needs to be.

I'll do my best to work out the rough spots, but it's difficult to create the semblance of smooth motion with too few frames...
Just for comparison:
Original, 152K http://calnet.sdsu.edu/images/magnum.gif
20K http://calnet.sdsu.edu/images/magnum_smaller.gif

Hell yeah, "Monk" would be hysterical...kind of like using the words "jello" and "motivated" in the same sentence. ;)
There are quite a few good scenes from the movie that I can see doing this with...:D

it's a shame the size restriction tops out at 20K.
those flashes give it a nice 3-D effect.

Any chance of arn ever extending the 20k limit?
In the future I'll make a few avatars to push any projects I'm working on (Downfall, Splat!, CS) but my iTunes avatars will continue to evolve. I'm already thinking about iTunes Avatar 3.0 ;)

Not sure…you'd have to ask him. We know he can't give us anything bigger than 50x50...but the file size might be negotiable, depending on bandwidth/server performance.
Actually, I would be happy if we could have our 'tars link from external servers...eliminating the load on arn's end, and giving us all the freedom we wanted.:D
Mr. Anderson
Sep 7, 2002, 06:28 PM
The 20k is here to say, I'm sorry. We discussed this at length a while back with arn and especially with more people getting tars, the bandwidth continues to rise.
And the avatar contest will be a bi-yearly event. Its takes too much work, so look for it around December.

exactly - go take a look at some of the entries in the first avatar contest - its pretty damn amazing - I think bender got 80 frames in his. Although judging this time around might be pretty damn tough. I hope eye and b2tm are up for it and don't want to enter anything themselves, they helped a ton last time. And you can't do a poll - not with over 100 entries.
Speaking of which, I have to finish up the poll for the avatar contest. I'll do that later tonight, I have to get going soon.

Here's it without the egg for further examination:
If we could get a still image from the animation and compare it with diagrams of a leech, we might be able to determine what it really is.
I'm also interested as to where you got the animation. Perhaps the original source of the animation may offer some clues...

I actually found it while browsing some other forum, (I don't even remember which one it was!:o)

I don't know about an air bubble, It would be kinda hard to get stuck in one, and I've seen pictures of tadpoles and other things inside eggs and they looked sorta like that. I'll look for a tadpole pic to compare. :)
That's another thing I'm not sure about...

its not about pulling underwear out of your shorts - we're talking about things at an astromonical scale (literally) so it is a bit different. Besides, orbit mars about what? the sun? it would be quite small and look simillar to rower's old tar. The Earth/Moon one was interesting but it just didn't work trying to get 360 degrees of rotation in 20k and make it look smooth and the colors come out nice - you should know all about that magnum!
D

Sep 8, 2002, 10:03 PM
I meant just a view of the planet rotating. I can see how that could get excessive, especially with a detailed 3D model.

Mr. Anderson
Sep 9, 2002, 07:40 AM
I did rotation of the moon - grayscale, and it looked like crap at 20k with only 8 colors and 40 frames or so.
But playing around this morning to show you the results I came up with this!
Ha, I played around with the lossy setting in IR and it knocked 5k off the gif with no real perceived difference! The lossy setting is at 7 - I'm just more and more really impressed with IR.
D
King Cobra
Sep 9, 2002, 03:58 PM
Not bad.
IR certainly has to be one of the best full-blend animator/image editing apps w/ Photoshop.
For some reason, though, I have limitations to colors. When I want to get, say, a blue-green, I can only get a blue or a green. How can I get more colors from IR? I figure it'll bring the GIF animation size up.

Originally I used just Photoshop documents and I saved each frame as a PICT file. Of course, I want to export the animation, but Optimization leads to crappy colors. I'm exporting as images only, meaning GIFs.

I export all my animations as a series of single images - IR has an import function that allows you to import a folder of images for an animation. Pretty damn simple. And sometimes I'll make the animation 100x100 and let IR do the reductions.
This way you don't limit yourself from the start and let IR do the optimization.

Well, I'm working on a new avatar, which I'll put up, probably in November/December. But, in IR, there are so many options to export (Images Only, HTMl and Images, etc.) and all this coding, I guess, within the options button or something. (I am not using IR right now, just PS.) How can I get the best colorization/pixel size reduction out of all this?

in the main window select 2-up
that shows the original and the optimized -
then selecting the optimized section (by clicking any where in the window) you can do the optimizations via the color window palette. Every time you lower the color count, or change a setting it updates the optimized image. Just make sure you make the window big enough to see all the specs at the bottom.

I would import the graphic into IR from PS and start with a 128 palette. After that try lowering the color count by 10 and keep an eye on image quality and byte size.

I have to say that I like that one too.
Well, since there is a renaissance of 'tars lately - and some with a lot of animation and film references - I'm thinking of going with this one - one of my favorite movies of the 90s!
let me know what you think,

I think it's from some cheezy sci-fi parody flick with Tim Allen, though i'm not sure. :)

Galaxy Quest - and it wasn't exactly cheesy, it was a spoof of the old Star Trek Series and trekkies in general - if you ever watched the old shows its hysterical

Having always gone for the 'build your own' option on the 'tars, I've come to realize that there is a ton of stuff out there that works really well, and less effort too.
Here's my latest find.
