do you treat your machine well or do you work the heck out of it, never clean it, type hard on it, drink near it...etc

for me, i never drink near my laptop and i type lightly...but i don't clean my screen enough

everything else i own i treat with respect

...cept for my guitar, i play that hard and carry it around with my tools when i do my landscaping job:p

I don't usually clean the Cube, but when it comes time for my precious LCD display to have all its fingermarks removed it's done.

I also get very fustrated with keyboards and mice, as I make so many denm errors, plus I type slowly.

I used to have a can of soda beside my computer before the summer, but I kept spilling the s[E].

I need to find a new alternative to cans. I think I need to get one of those geek caps with straws that draw liquid potato chips to my gums. :D :p  J/K duh

My two Beige G3s get pummeled with crumbs, spills, occasional cigarette burns, and dust. They're my workhorses and I really don't care what they look like as long as they work.

On the other hand, I treat my Powerbook like a priceless artifact. I wipe it down with a special cloth and don't eat, drink, or smoke within 5 feet of it. I think it's mostly because of the screen. I've kept it in perfect condition and use a piece of felt to protect the screen from keyboard marks when the lid is closed.

My PC, which I only use for 3D work and web design compatibility, deserves to get a kick in the arse once in awhile, let alone a small scratch or stain. It's a frankenstein contraption of spare parts and if it dies on me I certainly won't shed a tear.

I pretty much abuse my computer.

Then again, it's a 4 year old Win98 system, which will be replaced with a Mac at Christmasas time, so I don't care all that much. ;)

I totally baby my TiBook........ :) it's coming up to 18 months old, and could still pass as brand spanking new...... even the keyboard still looks spanking..... it gets polished and wiped lot's!!

The way that I look at it, is that when I'm using it in public, I want people to be envious...... and if it's in top condition as opposed to being dented to f@*k when I come to trade it in...... I'll get top dollar for as well...... ;) :D :)

There already was a drinking while posting thread, if you want to contribute to that. :D

My mother gave me some tips on how to clean the LCD, and I expanded it to computer terms:

(1) Because the LCD sends images directly to the surface of the screen, any liquids that seep in too deep can short out the display, especially when there are images on-screen. I suggest unplugging the monitor from all sources.

(2) Grab a bottle of Windex and some Bounty paper towels (two sheets, probably) and spray the paper towel so that the towel is *damp*, not *wet*.

(3) Clean the surface of the LCD carefully, w/o putting pressure on the surface or getting too much liquid on the surface.

(4) Use the dry side/towel to dry off the screen completely.

(5) Plug in the monitor and away you go.

I want to clean my G4, but can any1 tell me how? I have a digidesign 001 card in it and it has 1 cm of dust on it :)
spray it off with compressed air? (used for airbrush).
Or just put a vacuum cleaner in there... any ideas?

I wipe down my laptop about once a week with a slightly damp cloth. I do, however, have a question. the keys on my keyboard are gettin "shiny" do to oily fingers or whatever and a water dampened cloth doesn't get rid of it? what do you guys recommend I use that won't "hurt" my baby? Thanks

I'm drinking coffee here as I type...i eat by it to. Basically I do anything cause I just need it to last until my dual 1.25 gets here. Once I transfer my files over this goes home and I'll have a new shiny baby to take care of...I'll still drink coffee by it though.

That thing is gonna get HEAVY usage. Its coming for the purposes of school and freelance work. All graphics, video, and 3D animation. I'll be keeping her in good condition, though the mirrored optical drives are gonna be a pain...

My iBook fell off a desk 3 feet onto a hard tile floor. It survived, but was cosmetically damaged. When the screen started to black out without reason a few weeks ago, I sent it in to Apple. Repairs are costing $690, but insurance is paying for it, so it's not bad. Machine is coming back next Monday (hopefully). Anyway, this shows that I am not that careful with my equipment.

However, I have made a vow to change. I have decided to carry my iBook in it's protective sleeve (the one that came with it in it's box) and be more careful in general.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a good carrying case for the iBook that won't scratch the plastic? I have had a problem with the gritty texture of my case scratching the iBook. Thanks.

Well I have always taken care of my PB800. I just traded it to a guy in Dallas for a 22" display and 933 with 1.28GIGS of RAM. I set it up today, and I plan to baby this baby. Your latent homophobia is quite disconcerting, I would think, particularly given your tendency to sleep with guys. I embrace your rights, and the rights of gay men everywhere, but lying about it is no way to accept yourself.

As to your comment about the size of my ass, I would urge you to look in a mirror once in a while and see what the difference is between you and me. The answer is: you had sex with your mother, and I didn't.

Fatal Frame was not scary, you're simply a wuss. As I recalled, our character was being attacked by a big scary ghost character and your ass almost cried 'cause it frightened you so much. Maybe next time we should get you the Little Mermaid game or some ****. Ecco the Dolphin. Something that won't give you nightmares.

And by the way, you really should come clean about the whole Mac thing. That IBM posters that cover your wall, mixed with your addiction to MacRumors.com as you loudly proclaim that you are "pulling the wool over the eyes of those dumb-ass sheep" really hurts me, and I'm sure all these actual Mac users.

Don't do it, Man! Windex contains ammonia - probably the next thing you want to put on an LCD after kerosene. Instead use an alcohol & ammonia free cleaner. In the US there is a readily available product called "Apple Polish". Guess what it is for : yep, cleaning apple products. They include special lint free polishing cloths, and the liquid works wonders on the whole case and LCD. It keeps my Pismo looking good.

To answer your question about your "shiny" keys. They are not dirty - they are worn. When they are manufactured a slight texture is applied. If you take a magnifying glass you can see that it looks like the surface of an egg. As you type you wear this off, sort of a graceful aging, wrinkles for your Mac. Don't fight it, embrace it. It shows that you are using your computer.

I am hard on my imac.

I never drink or eat near it ant I keep it clean.

It gets abused by going lots of places with me, and often by bike. I have it in a computer sleeve (computer always fully turned off) in my bike bag and the but roads and traffic are rough here. Often things like papers and dust seem to scratch the outer surface on a long haul. I've taken to sticking stickers on the under side from cool places I've been like rocket juice in Tucson, or a mood (blue and changes with temp) dolphin sticker to remind me not to pollute too much.

About a month ago while visting friends, a moron, control freak, anal, female picked up my bike bag with out asking. One minute after crashing hard from about 2 feet high on one corner by moving it she asked: "can I move this bag by the door?". I snarled "watch it there is a computer in there" that minute too late .

So pleezzzze anyone don't throw around beat up bike bags they may have precious cargo.

i just have an old dell dimension (with a nice trinitron though)... i periodically take the keyboard apart and wash it... my screen is spic and span too... and i got one of those kensington studio display mice... oh so nice, i keep it clean too... when i get a powerbook, oh gosh. few can imagine how jealously i shall guard it with my life. if i had a girlfriend, she'd be oh so jealous.

working on it lol... my bday is nov 20, so i have to wait. i figure i'll keep the dimension for games (nice geforce3ti)... but yeah, they better go 1GHz before my birthday... *crosses fingers*

anyway, on top of being nice on my wintel, i gave it a pretty facelift with styleXP... a custom-edited aqua theme..
