MacRumors
Sep 20, 2002, 01:09 PM
Inspired by Apple's own Switch Ads (http://www.apple.com/switch), MacRumors users competed in a contest to make their own "Switch" ads to be judged by other members of the MacRumors community.

The Results are in: (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?threadid=11156)

And the winner of the First Ever MacRumors Switch Ad Contest is Teabgs (http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=3647), who received almost 20% of the votes with his Monkey Switch Ad (http://homepages.nyu.edu/~jgg221). Monkey Switch Ad was recently featured on TechTV's Screensavers (http://www.techtv.com).

Msibbern (http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=6524) came in 2nd Place with Grow-Up....With a Mac Switch Ad (http://homepage.mac.com/magicshow/.Movies/switch.mov) and received 11.36% of the votes.

Al_LeVine (http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=11540) came in 3rd with his Tweek South Park Switch Ad (http://homepage.mac.com/zigmanx001/iMovieTheater7.html) with 9.70% of the votes.

Honorable mentions go to JohnC (http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=11553) with Lego Switch Switch Ad (http://homepage.mac.com/keyframes/iMovieTheater1.html) (8.03%) and Beej (http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=3327) with Ballmer Switch (http://homepage.mac.com/~weeno/.Movies/switch-ballmer.mov) (7.76%)

Great job guys! And thanks also to all the participants who entered an ad and all the members who came out to vote.

I hope Apple has enough of a sense of humor to put that up with the other ones on their website or at least show it at the next MacWorld or whatever. Heck it should run on TV.

I like it better than the e-Trade monkey!

Could you imagine seeing the Monkey Switch at an Apple Expo - that would be hysterical - wow. :D

But I'm with jello - why a negative? Weird, this was all in fun and showcased a wide range of great creative talent. Maybe a sore loser???

Ah, unfotunately, yes it is. There was a longer one somewhere, that was made into a music video. If anyone has the link they should post it.

what happened to the porn-producer guy ??? I want to see HIM featured in an official Apple ad...

Imagine if all the porn in the world was produced on mac, Apple would not have to care about market share anymore :D

Good job!

I voted for the Grow-Up....With a Mac Switch Ad because I think it is pretty funny. But the monkey switch ad is funny, too, so I'm all bananas for it! I was actually surprised to see it on a rerun of The Screensavers (http://www.thescreensavers.com/) today.

Would someone please tell Mr. Ballmer the difference between charisma and idiocy, he seems in dire need of clarification.

Of course, if someone were to, i don't know, pay me tons of money to get all fat and sweaty and scream like a moron in front of an auditorium of people... well..i think i'd probably do it. Maybe he does know that he's acting like an idiot, one things for sure, he's one rich idiot!!!

If you're referring to Will Ferrell then you didn't get the joke. He wasn't really in the porn business. He's an actor and was until recently on Saturday Night Live. This is probably why the commerical with him will never be aired. Too many people wouldn't get the joke.

Congrats to everyone who entered. Some nice work.

Also, thanks to those who voted for "Grow Up... With a Mac." Much appreciated. Now I'm waiting for the big prize to arrive in the mail.

Note to Apple: I have the original on DV if you need it for the next run of switch commercials. :)

Best,

OMG! The Ballmer one was just too funny. As the lone Mac tech in my company's Helpdesk, I enjoyed playing the monkey boy video earlier in the week and seeing this ad just made my evening.

I actually converted the portion of audio where he screams like a little girl when he stumbles and starts to skip around the stage into a WAV file and made that my Mail notification sound on my pee-cee at work. That really peev'd my co-workers off.

DUH !

pluuuuuuueeze, I got the joke, thank you. Sorry if I don't look up all the actors real names...what you mean that monkey was not a real monkey ?

And it is not going to be aired not because people don't get the joke (people are not THAT stupid), but because the way US (auto)censorship works: you can see 27 people getting shot on TV every minute, but you cannot say the word '*****', or god forbid, even show one. Anyway, 'the character' of Will Ferrell (I guess I need to chose my words really carefully around here...) has a badass attitude, and I think it would be nice to see more of that in Apple ads, even if it is a joke...

I'd buy a computer from the Big Lebowski...

Did anyone else have problems seeing the winner, the Lego, and one other? The baby and Ballmer worked just fine. Is there a problem with the Quicktime 6 plug-in on Netscape 4.79? (running on System 9.1)

Congratulations to all of the entrants to the contest for putting their creative influence out there. The monkey had me in stitches, and the South Park was spot on, IMO. But I must say that there is nothing more hilarious than Steve Ballmer being his usual over-the-top self. To paraphrase Kevin Smith's final Jay and Silent Bob film, "Steve Ballmer is ******** clown shoes."

it might be a netscape thing. I have them all working with OS9.1 and Netscape 4.75....

oh, and QT 6....so, try another browser maybe?

The South Park ad can be found at http://shpadoinkle.net/switch in various formats.

Might want to edit the main page just in case apple does something stupid...

It IS a Netscape thing. I used v4.79 and QT6 didn't work on some movies. So, I downloaded IE 5.1.5 and installed the QT6 plug-ins. All of the movies worked fine. Since you used Netscape 4.75, I am left to conclude that my problem may be limited to Netscape 4.79. I downloaded it and reinstalled it and the problem persisted. Thanks for the suggestion. It enabled me to see all of the movies. :)

By the way, my bad for failing to congratulate you on a great movie. Making that movie with a clay model must have been a HUGE amount of WORK! Way to go on your persistence as well as artistic accomplishment.

Here's the link for the Steve Ballmer/Domokun music video. Some of you might have seen this at Defcon, maybe somewhere else.
