Well I haven't yet delivered the linux box (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=115794) to my mother when I found out a friend of mine is looking to unload an old Imac for 300$ (CND). Using the power of trades, I may be able to get the price down closer to 100$. CPU: 233 MHz PPC 750 128 Ram. I need to know if it has a serial port for her printer, and a modem.
Secondly, is it worth 100$ for this machine? 300$?

the imac has usb 1.1, but there are numerous serial>usb adapters. if it's parallel (the really wide one that's not scuzzy) im not sure about adapters. an imac of that vintage has a 33.6kbps modem. it's definitely NOT worth 300, even CDN with that much ram. it'll need at least 256 to run osx. 128 might run 8 or 9; not sure. 100 sounds like a great deal, since another 70 bucks US'll get you a 256mb dimm of pc133 ram which will work in the imac.

DO NOT BUY. Won't run osx for crap. Buy her a mac mini base model. Thats what I did for my mom. Now if she would just stop calling me for tech support, ughhh.

Thank goodness you didn't get her a Windows machine then you'd get at least twice as many calls. ;)
