The alt for one of the picture on apple.com/home is "14-inch iBook"
Now that's something interesting...

Ok, I want that ******* machine!!!! It rocks, and therefore expect PowerMacs @ about 1.2 to 1.4 GHz!!
Reasonable prices, I believe.

But is this it: iMac, iphoto, and iBook? What about PowerMacs? Or a digital lifestyle device? Man, some people are gonna be PISSED...

Jan 7, 2002, 10:38 AM
Wow...I wonder if that 14 inch iBook thing is to be taken for real! I love my new iBook as-is because the screen is bright, crisp and compact - But a 14 inch model would put a different spin on things...perhaps a better spin!

Incredible. My call for the towers:

G4 867 base
G4 1GHz mid
G4 dual 933 high end

Only 933 MHz Dual G4? Isnīt that too little of a speed-bump fpr the high end? The Pro users gonna be pissed... 1.2 GHz Dual would be appreciated...

i'M expecting G5's, apple did say full speed ahead

arn
Jan 7, 2002, 10:49 AM
I agree...

I think the mhz jump would need to be bigger....

right now a 867 PowerMac with Superdrive/GeForce2 is $2500.... the new iMac with 15" monitor, 800mhz G4/Suprtdrive/GeForce 2 is $1800

On the contrary, this kind of press is a big deal for Apple, and you can be sure they'll want everyone to see it (just not quite as early as we did...)

Looking at the HTML source suggests that imac2002 and ibook2002 images are stored on an Akamai server

If the iMac line goes from top end

iMac 700 Mhz G3 --> iMac 800 Mhz G4

I would expect...

Powermac Dual 800 MHz G4 --> Dual 1 GHz G5?

At the very least we should see Dual 1, 1.2, 1.4 Ghz.

Anything less than that does not distinguish the PowerMac line.

I donīt believe Apple/Mot have enough G5 machines ready for a wide spread release.

I kind of doubt the 14" ibook thing. It seems that even though there is room for a larger screen perhaps that they would have to expand the case a little and it would work agains how extreemly portable the ibook is...

Sadly, I'm still holding out for a "just one more thing" blockbuster- but concede that the Time article makes it unlikely.

I think we're in for a treat today...

I don't think we're just going to see a new iMac & iBook....

I think there's a lot more to it than just that...

just wait and see...

Sounds very interesting indeed. It looks like I may be splashing out on a replacement for my G3 500Mhz.

BTW, has anyone noticed that the International Apple Stores have been closed; "The Apple Store is temporarily unavailable due to scheduled maintenance. Please try again later." Apple Store UK

It looks like we should be able to get our hands on the new Mac's sooner rather than later.

you can doubt it, it's your right... but this is what the source looks like on apple.com/home
<A HREF="/ibook/"><IMG SRC="http://a772.g.akamai.net/7/772/51/e29c073a6b175b/www.apple.com/home/images/2002/01/ibook01072002.gif" WIDTH=170 HEIGHT=125 BORDER=0 ALT="14-inch iBook"></A></TD>

the image isn't there yet, but why would they put up a bogus source code??

Jan 7, 2002, 11:03 AM
Well, no slot load for imac maybe the ibook will

seems odd to drop the slot load for the imac.

The iMac is G4, hooray.
I guess we know what they did with all the re-called cubes and their components.

I cannot wait any longer

1.2GHz Dual would be appreciated for WHAT? Everyone is so anxious to get a few thousand megahertz in their computers, but what are you going to use it for? And who could possibly afford it?

If Apple focused less on speed, and more on the digital hub, and changing the face of computing, then everyone would greatly benefit. I use a Mac because I can accomplish things in fewer steps than I could on a PC. The speed of my processor has never been an issue (400MHz G3), and I am a professional graphic designer who uses the Mac every day with large files and multiple applications (and OS9, thank you.)

So, who cares about speed. I want more iDevices and intuitive software.

true... suppose it's possible the lower end models have slot loads...

but it would likely be easier for them to design if there was just 1 model...

What would I use the extra speed for? many many things. I may be in the minority but I don't use my mac as a "digital hub", I need it to perform many tough tasks ranging from rendering in cinema 4d and maya, along with some very processor intensive photoshop filters, and quite a bit of rendering quicktime files in adobe premiere. every second it takes to render is one less second I can spend working, and sometimes it is just painstaking to wait for some of these tasks. I need more power which means advances in processors (g4 to g5) and higher clock speeds. also fyi, having dual processors just about halves the time of many rendering tasks.

The important thing to remember here, is whether the 800 is the high, low, or midrage iMac. Possibly the iMac will go up to 1gHz and blow everyone away ("Full Speed Ahead!")

The g4 in the thing is immense, but will apple push it farther and use 1ghz apollos? I guess we're about to find out!

Those specs on the applesite must be for the top model. Apple always advertice for the top model and shows prices for the lowest model. I can't see why they should change that now...

Jan 7, 2002, 11:45 AM
Remember, they rely on Motorola for their high end chips so that means they can't get into a speed war with the wintel world. Apple cannot beat the many companies making chips, Apple is only one company. They also cannot beat the competition on price, because that requires you to make more boxy looking Macs with off the shelf parts. Would you buy the new iMac if it looked like a Dell and cost $1,800? Hell No!! It's the design of the hardware in software working together that makes Macs special, it makes them more than a computer and makes them into something you can lust after. If Apple did not make weirder and weirder computers that worked it would not survive. Now that Mac OS X is becoming the crash-less OS, the new macs will be more appliances than computers. This will not help Macs become the dominant OS on the block, but it will keep them around for the next decade. Which is OK with me.

That probably was imbarising. Have you guys see the video of Gates at a demo and he crahsed windows? He got the blue screen of death live on TV and infrot of a huge cowd at a Keynote. He said "It still has some bugs" That was the understatment of the year.

I think that everyone here is underestimating the full impact of what Apple has unleashed on us today... Consider the larger picture... you can now get a COMPLETE G4 system for $1300... Do you really understand what that means in the marketplace? AND do you really think that Apple is going to let the PowerMacs fester under such tight configurational competion for too long? I think not... The groundwork has been laid.

mcbane
Jan 7, 2002, 03:05 PM
just wondering if anybody knew about this as I haven't been following apple's release strategy for too long. Does apple ever release speed boosted comps without a big event? like could we see a dual 1.4ghz powermac in the near future or will it not be until the next macworld?

The answer: it's always a big event when Apple releases new products/upgrades (ie: most recently iPod)... However, they don't necessarily have to coincide with an Expo...
