Have you ever met anyone from these forums?
How did your initial impression of them match the idea of them that you had got from reading their posts?
---------------------------------------------------------------

Tonight, I met up with Applespider (http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?u=28180), the first person I've ever met from these forums.

Although I was extremely apprehensive at first, we had a good and often very funny time with drinks & dinner in Chelsea. Talked about Macs, San Francisco, work, MR & you guys... it was nice to put a face and voice to the name although the sober-minded voice of reason on these boards was, in real life, an irreverent and extremely jolly woman who loves her Mac to bits. A class lady and a lovely evening out with good food and great company... ;) :)

There have been different "Geekfests" done in the past, including one in London if I recall. I haven't been to any, but from what I remember reading about, it was a fun time.

I haven't met any other forum members, but I know that another forum member lives near enough to me that I would consider meeting this person. I wonder if there are any other MacRumors Forums members near me.

Gosh, I'm blushing :o But would have to reply likewise! As Blue knows (now), I've met a few people from various forums (fori?) over the years but as expected meeting someone from MR in person was just as I expected. We are one of the friendliest internet communities that I've come across and meeting Blue just proved that we can be just as charming in real life. ;)

I hate the way it takes FOREVER for people to cook... its like what, 350 degrees for 8 hours or something? And all the prepwork...

At least the powers are tasty on the way down, wouldn't you agree?

Lol... that was blatant false advertising!

So, have you met anyone from these boards?

Nope, there's only one other member who's near enough to meet for dinner or drinks and he's far more of the techie-type than I am I think. Not positive though.

Yup! Sorry... my Latin education scurries off and hides in the back of my mind after a few drinks! For some reason, I decided that forum must be linked to the 'servus, servum, servi, servo' and came up for fori for the plural... My Latin teacher would be turning in her grave.... if she were dead.

The Centurion catches him in the act]
Centurion: What's this, then? "Romanes eunt domus"? People called Romanes, they go, the house?
Brian: It says, "Romans go home. "
Centurion: No it doesn't ! What's the latin for "Roman"? Come on, come on !
Brian: Er, "Romanus" !
Centurion: Vocative plural of "Romanus" is?
Brian: Er, er, "Romani" !
Centurion: [Writes "Romani" over Brian's graffiti] "Eunt"? What is "eunt"? Conjugate the verb, "to go" !
Brian: Er, "Ire". Er, "eo", "is", "it", "imus", "itis", "eunt".
Centurion: So, "eunt" is...?
Brian: Third person plural present indicative, "they go".
Centurion: But, "Romans, go home" is an order. So you must use...?
[He twists Brian's ear]
Brian: Aaagh ! The imperative !
Centurion: Which is...?
Brian: Aaaagh ! Er, er, "i" !
Centurion: How many Romans?
Brian: Aaaaagh ! Plural, plural, er, "ite" !
Centurion: [Writes "ite"] "Domus"? Nominative? "Go home" is motion towards, isn't it?
Brian: Dative !
[the Centurion holds a sword to his throat]
Brian: Aaagh ! Not the dative, not the dative ! Er, er, accusative, "Domum" !
Centurion: But "Domus" takes the locative, which is...?
Brian: Er, "Domum" !
Centurion: [Writes "Domum"] Understand? Now, write it out a hundred times.
Brian: Yes sir. Thank you, sir. Hail Caesar, sir.
Centurion: Hail Caesar ! And if it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your balls off.

Suddenly I thought of this (slightly off-topic, but I guarantee there will be some of you laughing):LOL. That's great! I'm in Latin 3 right now, so I know what all of that stuff is.

I have a question to all of you that have taken or are currently taking Latin: Are all Latin teachers a bit hyper and strange? All three of the teachers that I have had are a bit odd and/or hyper. My grandmother and grandfather said that all of the Latin teachers that they had were also a bit weird/hyper. I am starting to see a trend. The teacher that I have now definitely has ADHD and she also drinks a lot of coffee. She has thrown stuff out of the window and her classes are always, well, a bit interesting. She is a very good teacher though.

I know that one member here is very close to where I live, but I am only 14 and he has a wife and kids so he is a good bit older than me. Also my parents already think that I spend way too much time on here and they would think it's a bit weird if I wanted to meet some other MR member in real life.

OT: why take Latin? If you plan to become a doctor or a lawyer, Latin is used quite a bit in medical and legal terminology. Also, since Latin is the basis for many Romance languages, knowledge of Latin can help you to understand those languages better. (Also, if you plan to rise to a high position in the Catholic Church, you have to understand Latin, since many scriptural texts are written in Latin.)

Translation: it's completely useless. I took a year of HS Latin, so trust me, I know! Clay's just giving the full-employment for Latin teachers propaganda. ;)

Ironically, Latin is just about the most "logical" language ever invented, because it lacks most idioms and its syntax is relatively straightforward (especially compared to English, which is a total nightmare of exceptions).

Thanks for your answers. Thinking ahead for my children's education. Maybe they could just learn latin roots and a modern language like Spanish. In reality, they will probably just tell me what they want to learn. thanks again.

Best way of doing it, let your kids decide and you advise them on what you think, but don't force them. Don't want them to get resentful now...

To get back on topic - I've never met anyone from here. In fact I feel a bit alone, there aren't really any other Danes around her at the moment.

And to get off topic again (or sub topic) - Latin might very well be extemely logical, but very complex and complicated anyway. Like other ancient languages I know (a teeny bit) about. Ancient Germanic should be a nightmare (and so is modern German).
Danish grammer is extremely simple, more than english, but as english it's full of exeptions (though they both come from germanic). I see a clear movement towards simplicity and exeptions from the invention of writing (and grammar) till the present day. Therefore I'm considering Danish to be one of the most highly evolved languages around :D

That is really cool BV & Applespider, glad you two had fun. :) I'm surprised more MR people haven't met, since people do seem very friendly with one another here.

Kind of along the same lines, I was wondering -- are there ever any public MR meetups when something big is going on at an Apple Store -- ie, the release of Tiger? Do all the MR members wear something to stand out, so everyone else knows they're from MR? A silly question, but I was just wondering, since I thought I saw a thread like that from around when Panther was released.

No, but she must have arrived at the pub a few seconds before me because she was standing near the door with an 'I'm looking for someone but I don't know what they look like' expression on her face... not helped by the noisy work-do bunch milling around the bar.

Double vodka & tonics and Bloody Marys soon followed. :)

OT: why take Latin?

Hmmm, good question.

I was wondering the exact same thing when I opened my first Latin textbook almost 4 decades ago and read a little poem inscribed on the inside cover by the previous user....

Latin is a dead language as dead as dead can be,

Latin killed the Romans and now it's killing me!

When I looked at a bit of Japanese before I went to Japan it struck me as having very logical grammar. To make up for it there's three writing systems and one has hundreds of different symbols. I guess a lot of foriegners in Japan can speak it OK but not read it properly.

As for Latin, I'm really pretty glad I studied it in early high school. It's really helped with my engineering degree and it's currently very useful in my medicine degree. :D

A fun idea might be to all wear nametags with our MR names on them to the release of tiger in our respective cities. I could imagine how much fun that would be in a city like London, or in SF. Personally, the closeist store to me is in the Short Pump mall in Richmond, VA.
