Apple announced four updates to their media applications today:
Final Cut Pro 5
Motion 2
SoundTrack Pro
DVD Studio Pro 4
All four products are now also bundled in a package called Final Cut Studio which delivers all products for $1299.
Apple has updated the online Apple Store (http://store.apple.com/) to reflect the changes. Each application is still available individually.

Apple DVD Player v4.6

I guess 10.4.1 will be out soon as will be DVD Player v 4.6. (The version shipping with Tiger Gold is advertised as v. 4.5!) It also means, even the latest PB won't be able to play back HD DVDs!

I remember on here politely :p discussing the idea of eventually ditching Logic and turning it into a audio editor that was more easily used for film makers. Looks like apple decided to keep Logic as an aswesome tool for musicians (so far) and develop Soundtrack into what looks like a fabulous tool for film makers. I'm most certainly going to own both and use both, good move on apples part i think.

well, TS predicted:
Almost certain at this point is that Apple will deliver new versions of DVD Studio Pro and Shake alongside the new version of Final Cut Pro, along with very likely an upgrade to Motion. Sources continue to point to at least one completely new pro video application, and rumblings have increased recently that a totally new pro audio application will debut as well.
they were right about everything but the new pro video app. as for all those codenames and everything, TS said they included bundled apps with FCP.

I don't know if this means anything at all but why is it that the powermacs no longer can be upgraded to a ATI Radeon 9800 ? They only have 2 graphics card possibilities for the 2.5 G5? Radeon 9600 and GeForce 6800? They dont even have it on the learn more.Is just because they ran out of stock or is it more then that?

Good updates geared for the users who are attending the conference.
At least there wasn't a "and one more thing, announcing the iPod photo HD with widescreen." ( wait that is a Sony PSP)
Hope to see some Powerbooks That can run this new software, which is available in May.
remember, the during the financial results call, they reiterated that PB G5 was the 'Mother' of all thermal challenges. Mother's day is May 8, this software is available in May, Tiger will be out Just before May.
I Highly doubt that Apple would release this softwe requiring a G5 and not have a PB G5 that can run it.

On-the-fly multi-camera editing, a specific Foley/post-pro audio app, HD intergrated DVD...
This is a good upgrade, and I think it points to Apples continuing evolution of pro-level integration.

I don't know, but if Apple manages to do what they did with FCP, they're going to give themselves even more of a reputation in the film/video/audio industry. I'm sure they've already cut a nice chunk out of potential Avid costumers...so you never know, if Soundtrack Pro is on the ball, we may start to see some ProTools users making the jump. It sounds like you don't need any proprietary hardware to run soundtrack either.

The answer is both. This is from Apple's PR site (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/apr/17hd.html):
Apple is committed to both emerging high definition DVD standards—Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD. Apple is an active member of the DVD Forum which developed the HD DVD standard, and last month joined the Board of Directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association.
Apple's demo today in Las Vegas included a prototype HD-DVD player made by Toshiba, which is of course a rival to Sony's Blu Ray.
A Sunday announcement???
Yes, as FCP has had Sunday announcements at NAB for each of the past 6 years now (FCP 1, 2, 3, 4, 4.5 and now 5). This is nothing out of the ordinary or even noteworthy.
Distributed Encoding in DVD Studio Pro HD makes a happy happy person.

NOOO...okay, i don't care about avid but I love combustion (and discreet is more high high end anyways, most of their stuff runs on its own hardware and is mucho mucho expensive and an industry standard). Motion is not a compositing tool on the level of Combustion, and shake is wayyy more expensive. Motion and combustion make a very affordable and powerful compositing/motion graphics combination.
This FCPstudio is a fabulous update, as soon as the new PMacs come out, i'm kissing a couple thousand goodbye nice and quick. I know i'm a realistic optimist but i have a strong feeling the new hardware will not dissapoint.

The new features in Soundtrack Pro is going to piss off a lot of Logic Pro users. Several of the features have been asked for for years, and now a $300 app gets them first? They did the same thing with Garageband. If this kind of thing continues, there is going to be a mass defection from Logic to another alternative.

Oh, I hoped that Apple will create Pro level audio editing application... Still there is nothing like Steiberg WaveLabs (Win) in Macinthosh world... Yes, there is ProTools, but that is tied to the proprietary hardware, and out of question. Peak is almost there, but still limited to 2 tracks only, and no montage possibilities...

I have all the current versions of the stuff thats in the FC Studio box, but I bought them separately (FCPHD, Motion, DVDSP3).
To upgrade, Apple offers you the choice of upgrading the apps individually (obviously the most expensive), upgrading if you have ONLY FCP (any version) and finally, upgrading to FC Studio if you already have the production suite.
My question is - if I already own the individual apps, will I be able to utilize the Production Suite upgrade path? Or did Production Suite come with special Production Suite specific serial numbers (thereby preventing upgrades for anyone who didnt buy the whole thing in one go)?
It would be cruel to have pay more for not buying Production Suite all in one go.
Opinions?

Example, working on project for client, editing final copy on plane from NYC to LAX, meet client, cannot author the HD DVD, give client the laptop instead, lose client for not being prepared, cannot afford new laptop, lose job, get a job working late shift tech support for Dell, become manic depressive answering tech questions like 'Where is the any key?', get promoted at Dell to sales, finally commit suicide because of massive depression from people asking do I qualify for a 'free CD burner upgrade'.

I love the boxes Apple has cooked up for this software. Very sleek, very professional.
And as a Final Cut Express user, my eyes are officially bugged. The multicam in FC5 is amazing, I can only hope that makes its way to FCE 4 in January. Meanwhile Soundtrack Pro, Motion and DVD SP all look to be incredible. I only wish I had moula to buy Final Cut Studio. Or a real use for it outside of fun projects with friends...

DVD Studio Pro now supports HD DVD... now I don't know much about the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD battle, but is this HD DVD the same that Blu-Ray is competing with? Because Apple just joined the Blu-Ray consortium. I'm very confused.

Read my post on page 2 of this thread. Or,
read the 5th paragraph (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/apr/17hd.html) of this Apple press release.
FCP 5 finally goes native HDV! This is single-handedly the biggest new feature of FCP and way better support than iMovie, with its lousy transcoding to AIC. RT-Extreme also means you can edit HDV on lower-end Macs without it becoming frustrating.
I agree. I can't wait. My days and nights of transcoding m2t to DVCProHD will soon be over! This will also make printing to D-VHS and miniDV (HDV) tape much easier (for the purpose of saving master prints).
Actually I'm not very interested in these apps (it's not my line of work), but I am waiting for a G5 (or equivalent) PowerBook and if Apple is releasing apps that no longer support the current G4's then it can't be too long.
Yeah, maybe two or three more years at the most. iBooks had G3s for a long time even after G4 only applications were out. I suppose people will say, "but PowerBooks are the pro line and they should be up to the task of running all the pro software." PowerBook G4s will still run DVDSP 4. They just won't be able to (according to the information cited) avail the HD authoring features, and (apparently) they won't be able to play back HD-DVD content.

DLT drive does not mean dual layer DVD drive. It means a DLT tape drive to enable you to take the DVD image (on tape) to a proper DVD replication facility. Thanks for the clarification.
On the tech specs page, they also say:Output Formats
- DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, Double-layer media
- Double-layer media supportGuess that is more relevant?Holy Cow! Is this the new Transformers movie? As a little kid, that was one of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons. I was always waiting for a live-action version!I believe they are making one...

Although according to Empire magazine the live action Transformers movie is due 17th November '06, and is being produced by Micahel Bay [Armageddon, Amityville re-hash] so may, or may not depending how you look at it, be worth a look!!!

HD requires G5,
That is why they need a G5 in a PB.
As others have pointed out, only burning HD DVDs is said to require a G5. However, that system requirement may be incorrect. Recently I read a benchmark article which showed that a 1.6 Ghz G4 is like a 1.4 Ghz G5. The big advantages of the G5 come from the massive system bus, the ability to use DDR and of course the higher clockspeed. But the 8641 Motorola chips I linked to accomodate a 667 Mhz bus and they should start at 2 Ghz. So they should be able to burn DVDs. The big advantage of the G4 is the minimal power requirements and thermal challenges.
However, no that I think about it, the very fact that the Motorola website exists means that for some reason Apple is not imposing secrecy on Motorola, which makes me suspect has opted not to go with those chips.

Freescale do have an alternative to the hot G5's, and the new G5's are getting cooler, so it might not be so long. IBM, Freescale and Apple have had plenty of time to work on this.
All Apple have been saying is that it would be difficult to get the current G5 desktop/server chip into a very small PowerBook, but they haven't said anything about using an alternative chip, which (in my opinion) is more likely.

At the Apple Store on the grey right hand column under "New to the Store" is the term "Upgrades for Pro Video Production". Clicking there explains all upgrade paths. One is from Production Suite for $499 OR FCP HD to Final Cut Studio for $699. :)
This seems to exclude other applications qualifying for a full upgrade. Seems like if we own more than one of the Studio applications we ought to be able to upgrade to Studio for $499. In my dreams anyway. :(

The new features in Soundtrack Pro is going to piss off a lot of Logic Pro users. Several of the features have been asked for for years, and now a $300 app gets them first? They did the same thing with Garageband. If this kind of thing continues, there is going to be a mass defection from Logic to another alternative.

The professional user does not want a portable that can just run the program, It has to be able to use the program for which it is designed.
And in the world of NLE's you will always be comprimsing ability for portability when you are working on a laptop in the field. Expecting PowerBooks to perform on par w/PowerMacs is not realistic.
Example, working on project for client, editing final copy on plane from NYC to LAX, meet client, cannot author the HD DVD, give client the laptop instead, lose client for not being prepared, ...
One minor hole in your hypothetical situation. Try fitting the new software, plus your HD source footage, plus room for render files, plus room for the rendered HD-DVD on a laptops HDD. Unless you are working on a really, really tiny project it isn't going to fit. And, even if you made an HD-DVD what is the client going to play it back on?
It will be a couple of years before your hypothetical starts turning into a reality and by that time I sure hope Apple has a G5 PowerBook out there. ;)

Pretty impressive stuff. I would still like to see some other features in FCP that I am not seeing right now in my quick review like adding multiple transitions automatically instead of just the default transition and ken burns effects. I would love to be able to make a slide show with stills as easily as in iPhoto/iMovie but allowing you to alter it in a pro way. I would also like to see network rendering. Maybe it's there but I'm not seeing it. However the native HDV work flow is enough by itself that I am purchasing this now. Tiger and all this new pro stuff. I'm excited.

Well, several things disappoint me with the latest release of FCP 5.0. Some of which are:
Filter sets. Having the ability to turn on or off certain filters in a sequence without having to load into the viewer each individual clip. This would also mean support for adjustment layers, as is present in AE and Photoshop.
Real-time Composite modes. Apple made no mention of Core-compatibility with FCP. Perhaps more light will be shed with Tiger's release.

i replied to this line of thinking in the osx audio forum:
i think this audio editor is fantastic. it shows that apple knows what a nice audio editor should do, and i think the UI is interface is gorgeous. you can't make a clumsy program like logic look like that overnight. it takes years.
in other words, this GREAT NEWS. just like the introduction of apple loops in garageband was great for logic people. (few people appreciate how advanced the apple loops technology really is--they diss it simply because it's "garageband" so it must be for weenies.) it's only natural and a matter of simple logic that these things will be back-integrated into logic. otherwise apple would wait years before releasing any apps and the market would have left them in the dust.
if the features sucked, then you should be moaning. but they look superb. the abilty to highlight a small section of audio for timeshifting is nice, and the cubase-like processing is great.
i have no problem about dropping $300 for a high-end standalone audio editor that can do all that. sometimes it's nice to get out of logic and do some sound editingmangling outside of the box. (and even an integrated audio editor like logic's is somewhat independent of the program--that's the nature of an audio editor.) my guess is that by logic 8 will have a similiar editor, but until then i'll get this and have the best of all worlds: logic vast midi programming, logic's synths and fx, and a nice standalone audio editor, for a total of $1300, the same price as buying the complete line of NI's plug-ins. (another potent combo would Live for arranging and Soundtrack Pro for making new loops.)
the following comment also makes sense:
Rob Schoeben, Apple's vice president of Applications Marketing, regarding Soundtrack Pro and Logic:
"Pro Tools approach is to try to be one tool for everything," said Schoeben. "We took a lot of time to decide what the right way to solve the audio issues out there -- the answer was two tools. With some shared tools, but a great music creation tool in Logic Pro 7 and an audio for video tool that is first and foremost about creating the perfect soundtrack."
Source: http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/04/17/fcpexec/index.php
this is a great approach for film as the integration looks impressive, but it's fine for music too, since any audio editor is more or less running standalone. not everything has to be inside logic to run smoothly. in addition, by making it a stand alone app, they were free to work without the massive constraints that logic would have led to. and i bet it runs supersmoothly, as ground-up mac apps tend to do.

I don't need a stand alone editor. There are plenty of those. They kill the workflow by having to leave Logic, Open the Editor, make the changes, save the file, go back to Logic, Create a new track, Import the new file, and put it in the right place, Delete or Mute the old track. Or they could put a decent and modern editor in Logic so i can skip all the hassle.
I'm not talking about post either. These tools are needed for composition too, so I'm kind of pissed.

@1299, not bad. Now if I only had tht much money....
If you can't afford $1299, you don't belong. $1299 is SO LOW a price for the digital video industry, it's practically free.
Final Cut Studio is meant for digital video production at a professional level. At this level, a video camera costs $30,000 to $100,000. You need at least $25,000 of computer hardware - of which the PowerMac is a small component and memory and hard disk storage and backup are the major components. Since the software supports grid computing/distributed computing, you may also need several X-Serves.

but isn't that almost the same as you do now within logic's audio editor? i click on a wave which opens the editor, do the work (in a ugly ugly environment i admit), save the file, then go back to logic and drag it to where i want. the process doesn't sound all the different to me, as you don't work within the audio editor while your track is playing. in other words, audio editing is not a realtime composition process, is it?

I definitely agree Soundtrack Pro would be very well-suited for film-making purposes and soundtrack production also it is has nice intergration with several of Apple's pro-apps and also I agree about what Apple's Rob Schoeben said about Soundtrack Pro .

OK, so it writes to a format no one can write to, but that's all going to change soon. Nice work, Apple! Now standardize the Blu-Ray burner and get Sony to make a $600 HD camcorder! 2007?
What do you mean, "a format no one can write to"? HD DVDs created with DVDSP 4 can be burned to existing DVD±Rs. Take a look at Apple's DVD Studio Pro 4 (http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/dvdstudiopro/) page. Mouse over "author in SD or HD."
Blu-Ray would be nice but it's not absolutely essential to Apple's strategy. Please read my post on page 2 of this thread to see what Apple says regarding HD DVD and Blu-Ray.
Anyhow, serious professional work that goes to replicators doesn't go on DVD±Rs anyhow; it goes on Digital Linear Tape (DLT). I have a DLT drive. :)
As for a $600 HD camcorder, that'll likely take two years. It'll be another 6 months to a year before there's a sub-$1000 HD camcorder out (short of a used JVC HD1).

but isn't that almost the same as you do now within logic's audio editor? i click on a wave which opens the editor, do the work (in a ugly ugly environment i admit), save the file, then go back to logic and drag it to where i want. the process doesn't sound all the different to me, as you don't work within the audio editor while your track is playing. in other words, audio editing is not a realtime composition process, is it?
Yeah, if the track is in the arrange you don't have to leave Logic. You just make your edits and close the window and the changes are reflected automatically. It's just that the editor isn't very easy to use or very powerful. If they could manage to just incorporate the Soundtrack Pro editor into the current Sample Editor, all would be fine (on this front). But it's not and Logic users will likely have to wait a good deal of time for anything like that. I mean, it took almost 6 months to even get a real update at all (7.1 which we are still waiting for).
Don't get me wrong, I really do like Logic. I prefer it to ProTools, DP and Cubase. But the feature set is lagging behind those apps now. I got into Logic because they seemed to be really focused on bringing innovative features and stable software. I don't feel that way anymore, and it bothers me.
Sorry for hijacking this thread with this stuff. The new Suite looks really nice for the Video guys, just this little bit bothers me.

Soundtrack Pro looks to be the breakout software from the Final Cut Studio package. I think this program is desperately needed by the majority of video editors out there. If you've seen semi-professional video productions, the most glaring amateurish aspect has always been the audio.
Noise reduction, and the other tools will really elevate Apple's offering to the forefront. Vegas has a new competitor.

Can't you just view it from artistic/technical merit, ie. it's pretty damn good!! Could it be that you're so much a VX-only type chap who can't stand anything without the griffin riding on the bonnet? :p
Anyway, back on topic... personally speaking I've everything crossed at the moment in the hope that a "project" pulls off and therefore necessitates the need to purchase DVDSP4. :D

Introduction to OS X Lion or whatever to be release Winter of '06 *fingers crossed*
Don't expect this this year. It'll be previewed 2006 and be coming out 2007. Which would give Apple about 2 years between the upgrades as they said they were slowing it down. I'd say spring/summer 2007 is a good date for 10.5.

I think a lot of that problem is between the chair and the keyboard (and piss-poor production). I'm sure many people will find Soundtrack Pro very useful, but it will just be more pearls before swine for some. Just another tool to not use or not learn how to use properly.

On the tech specs page, they also say:Guess that is more relevant?I believe they are making one...
But that looks like a honda(?) ad I was once sent by email (I don't live in the US - maybe someone else will know?). I looked for it but don't have it anymore. There are a few similar transformer-style ads, one with a guy beating up a photocopier.
It is actually the Citroen C4. The shot was filmed on location in downtown Vancouver.

The new features in Soundtrack Pro is going to piss off a lot of Logic Pro users. Several of the features have been asked for for years, and now a $300 app gets them first? They did the same thing with Garageband. If this kind of thing continues, there is going to be a mass defection from Logic to another alternative.
fucanay
Hey Fucanay! Another one from OSX Audio here on the rumor mill?
seriously, can't see why this would cause anyone (me for instance) to defect from Logic. Logic is first and foremost a musicians tool, and Sundtrack pro, at least at first glance is a Video Audio/Music tool. Sure there are some overlaps between the two, like the Instruments/plugs from Logic here, now. But would you want to make music with Sountrack Pro? Or use logic for video Sound editing? I think this makes perfect sense to me, and i suspect that there will be useful "cross pollination" between the various flavours of Logic Sountrack AND Garage band. I really don't think Logic will be left behind. Just a result of where we are in the development cycle between various products.

They said they were going to stop the year to year update. Winter of '06 release would be about 18 months from the release of tiger. I don't expect Apple to sit on their hands as Longhorn is release. Tiger is good but it’s going to be old news when Longhorn comes out. Yes I know feature for feature Tiger is going to whip LH's butt but simply from the standpoint of marketing if Apple can start the buzz NOW and do a preview this year and a update at WWDC next year with a release just after Apple's Paris event it would take some of the wind out of Longshot’s sails.

1. Xvid is apparently not supported, but industry standard HD formats are supported. By "industry" I mean production industry, not software industry.
2. AC3 has ALWAYS been supported by DVD Studio Pro, going back to version 1. I don't know where you got the idea that DVDSP 3 didn't support AC3. You may now cease being utterly annoyed.
3. AC3 is not an editing format; it's good FCP doesn't "support" AC3. It's bad enough that MP3 and AAC files play back on FCP timelines. People are much better off using uncompressed AIFF/WAV files.

I realize there were no PMs today or people would be talking about it already. Coming out tomorrow maybe? Is it just software being shown off today? That would make sense, its not like you'd want (if its coming) new hardware technology to overshadow such a big video/software update the day (after)its announced.

Apple could have updated its ENTIRE line of desktops and portables yesterday and that would not have overshadowed Final Cut Studio. This idea of staggering announcements for the sake of not stealing thunder from products is mistaken. While it might make sense from an entertainment perspective, business wise it would be ruinous to hold back products for fear of "overshadowing." Besides, HD video demands faster hardware than what's out. A dual 2.5 does the job but certain renders and encodes still take a long time. :)

i just want to clarify a point as i got it from the website and everyone responses
i can edit my HDV footage on any of the new powerbooks right?
the only thing i really need a G5 for is if i want to burn HD to a HD DVD? meaning that if the need came, i can just take an external hard drive with my footage, hook it up to a capable machine and go from there?
i can just easily downgrade my HDV captured footage to 16:9 ratio SD and burn it to play on just SD DVD's? the current used by everybody?
the reason i ask is because i want to upgrade from my Sawtooth to a 15 inch powerbook in september ... i need portability, and i want to get just lower priced (maybe used) HDV cam --- i don't make a lot, or any money from my video work, it's almost all art/personal short projects. I'd like to work more with feature length, and i'd like to get the highest quality i can afford, and i love the 16:9 ratio, and i would like to watch it full screen, with with the highest quality on my LCD TV or when projected on large screens for viewings
thanks in advance ... i didn't want to make a new thread for this question, just figured i would ask in this one.

All I can say is that I have 2 orders placed, with the Apple store, for the $499 studio upgrades which I am told will work perfectly. I obviously haven't 'tried' it.
But, if you consider this: Who, if not us, WOULD be eligible for the $499 upgrade ? It's a fact the $699 upgrade is a one-product upgrade, i.e. it's clear on Apple's website that you can upgrade for $699 if you have any ONE of the products mentioned (as proven by the BUY button :-) ). So, the upgrade from the product suite, purely logically, comes into play if you have not one but all the products (that were previously available) installed and owned already....
For what it's worth, I can give you my order number - maybe you can reference my sales person(s).....

Dan, I was told that if I buy the Suite upgrade, it will look for only 1 serial number to match, not 3. Apparently, those who bought the earlier suite version were given only 1 serial for the entire 3 apps. That is the number that the upgrade will try to reference. That's what I was told.

So it is just now dawning on me how amazing the midi support for motion could be. (i do a lot of music so luckily i already own a midi keyboard) I could animate and entire shot in REALTIME once i have things rigged up. You can almost completely bypass the process of setting up keyframes..its kind of like those remote control devices used for animatronic creatures, just animate it like a puppet.
