View Full Version : What's with all the trolls?

It seems we have a troll infestation problem. It seems all I've been hearing lately is trolls that, trolls this, and trolls everywhere!
Have the trolls crawled out from under the bridge? Or poured out of the witch's house? Or flooded in from the PC forums? Or were they merely impostors who secretly wish they are real trolls? Or some figured, maybe since Mac users are so easy to troll, it'd be a great practice for the real Troll Games?
This is a medal of honor to you, honored trolls. May your pathetic, meaningless lives take a shine from the attention I have provided you with this post. Behold!

I think it's just all the media attention Apple has gotten lately, especially Tiger and the inevitable, mostly MS negative, comparisons to Longhorn.
As much as I am a Mac fan, and a very long term MS detractor, I have never visited a PC forum to throw stones. I think a lot, but certainly not all, of the trolling comes from the younger gaming crowd.

This place is great, and I love the way it is moderated.
I used to run a political discussion board that was "no rules," and I had my e-mail accounts hacked, my board hijacked by a disloyal moderator (locked me out) etc. etc. etc.
Rules definitely work.

Yes, I've noticed a couple of threads with questionable intentions. I say we just send the Knights MacRumborites after them.
Classic example was the clown that posted the PM G4 he turned into a trash bin. He was looking to get a rise out of us. Moronic Fool.
I do think that these forums are sometimes too quick to judge/accuse/chastise: especially on pirating issues. That's just my opinion.
Otherwise, great community.

Raven, if you look up "lacero" in the dictionary, the definition is "...oblique approach, liable to be misunderstood on the surface but often carrying undercurrents of satire or irony"
The problem with satirical posts, of course, is that they can go either way - the poster can say "No I was serious" or "didn't you see I was being satirical?" depending...

When I was a Nubee this must have been getting old to lots on Macrumors. I had a good initial welcome, but after that I got a bit of cold shoulder from the Macrumor gang :(
There appears to be lots of negative vibes directed at many of the hardware related posts. I am not sure why people go out of their way to come here to start useless negative posts. Wonder if it has to do with Summer coming up, and people in High School and College taking out end of the year stress on us loyal Mac users.
I hope i don't appear to be a troll to many of the Macrumor regulars, I am just on the internet allot during work, and consider myself chatty.

In my book a troll is someone who joins to post inflammatory remarks just to get the forums all riled up and start a flame war.
The activity of trolling can also be described as multiple useless and inflammatory remarks to a thread designed to derail discussion into bickering and argument.
Trolls usually hit and run, but sometimes quite senior members of a forum will do a little trolling...
The bloke in the thread listed above is a clasic troll, one post and then sits back to watch the faithfull leap to condemn him.
Hence the phrase "Please do not feed the troll".
Trolls in mythology are neither little or harmless, European ones turn to stone in sunlight (at least they do in Prof. Tolkiens books) AD&D trolls regenerate damage after you've belted them with a large weapon, so you need to set them on fire to stop them...

Apr 21, 2005, 12:19 PM
so what exactly is a troll?
You want a serious answer? It's a fishing term, definition below is from www.m-w.com:
transitive senses
1 : to cause to move round and round : ROLL
2 a : to sing the parts of (as a round or catch) in succession b : to sing loudly c : to celebrate in song
3 a : to fish for by trolling b : to fish by trolling in <troll lakes> c : to pull through the water in trolling <troll a lure>
intransitive senses
1 : to move around : RAMBLE
2 : to fish by trailing a lure or baited hook from a moving boat
3 : to sing or play in a jovial manner
4 : to speak rapidly
Used as a noun, it means someone who comes to a newsgroup/forum and posts something to get a rise out of the regulars. A good troll can be hilarious. There's nothing wrong with trolling per se, but it's hard to say what a good troll is. Used correctly it should hook people who should know better - noobies (= minnows) generally don't count but lamer trolls don't know that. Hooking a demi-god should be the goal of any troll attempt to macrumors.
It's easier to know what a bad troll is, e.g. coming to macrumors and saying "MACS sux!" or going to a PC forum and saying "Winbloze SUX!" are lame. The Macintrash one was fairly good but not the best I've seen. (Edit: and the original poster let himself down badly in his subsequent posts)
Edit: The convention in usenet land used to be that if you were trolling you had to put something in a custom header or hidden in the message itself so that if you were challenged you could confirm it was a troll, and weren't just being stupid.

Apr 21, 2005, 12:21 PM
so you need to set them on fire to stop them...
Hmmm...very interesting....
I'm just glad that "multiple useless and inflammatory remarks to a thread" designed for humor purposes but not to incite bickering is still considered marginally acceptable! :D
The modus operandi of the prototypical troll is to use his or her first post to state something that they know perfectly well everyone in the forum will disagree with, usually without a lot of carefully thought arguments, but rather with emotional language. And then, like WM said, sit back and enjoy.
But saying Apple is less than perfect isn't, and shouldn't be, considered trolling, in and of itself, here. And there are plenty of people who for some reason hang out here with strong opinions about the failure of Apple. Some of them don't even own macs. Meh, I don't feel compelled to hang around in pro-life web forums, but to each her or his own, as long as they don't just try to pick a fight.
Then there're also the people who only post ads for free iPods, or warez sites, or something like that, that is against forum rules. Those people are spammers, I guess, and not trolls, but quite possibly even worse....

I think trolling is also a context thing, Lacero, for instance, quite often posts seemingly trollish comments, but it's really his sense of humour coming over, I think the key is the intention, if the comment is supposed to start a fight then it's trolling, if it's designed to raise a smile, it's humour.
Some members don't get that division, and it does cause problems, but mostly we can spot the real thing.

I think that we should welcome new members. The influx is mainly due to the announcement of Tiger, NAB, and the upcoming WWDC. New members keep the forum lively. The moderators can't be everywhere. So if we see a problem it's our duty to bring it to their attention. When I joined it was an already thriving forum with well established protocols, rules, guidelines, regulars, long dignified discussions, good-humoured banters and a real strong community feel. I still believe that this is case 14 months after I joined when the membership number was 29.7k and the forums were already matured. Within that relatively short space of time the membership numbers have shot up to over 20k more ... that seems an incredibly big jump.
Fortunately I think the mods are doing well to keep the forum-felons under wraps. Strong bold opinion is good, very good in fact. It's good to read, digest and consider. But garbage is just, well, garbage.
I spect we may see another influx a few weeks into Tiger and over the WWDC, but I think the ship will hold.

Personally I find those who snitch on others then proceed to post in the thread telling them they snitched infinitely more annoying than those that troll. I can ignore a troll but there is just something I find smug and arrogant with people who do this.
but maybe that's just me?

Ouch!
But...hmmm...not that I really want to have this argument with you, but trolling is not like asking stupid questions. Few people who ask stupid questions are labeled trolls purely by virtue of their ignorance. You kinda have to choose to be a troll. So I'm not sure about the arrogance thing. I'm *not* better than people who ask stupid questions, because I ask them too (maybe on different topics). I hmmm...to the extent I am an ass, it is controlled enough that people generally don't complain about it. :D

sorry, should have been a little bit clearer. I meant more along the lines of responding to someone trolling or say asking advice on pirating software/music and the like. I don't mind them telling the person that possibly what they are doing is not appropriate for this site and reporting them in the process. I just find it annoying when they rub it in their face that they snitched, either way I don't see the point in rubbing it in.

You mean like posting a reply saying, "I reported you" or something like that, in the thread?

pretty much, although those who do this usually add in a little quip with their comment.

Ahhh, gotcha.... I have been guilty of putting comments like, "Someone needs a visit from the ban hamster" in my posts. :o
Blue Velvet -- I thought it was 2d10 that were rolled for a saving throw, and used as a percent? Or maybe that was D&D and AD&D used d20s? God, we're such geeks! :D

I'm a little shocked and dismayed that you'd think that any scheme we'd come up with that involved caged deathmatches wouldn't also involve poking with sticks. :rolleyes:I saw we use sticks and stones to break their bones. :p

Maybe trolls should get a special status, like instead of "601", "Demi-God" or "680000" they could get 386, Pentium Pro, or Celeron or even Millenium Edition
I just had to interject something else because all this D&D stuff is creeping me out. :)

Or 386SX/16...mmm...that was a good one. Especially running OS/2. Oh, yes. :(

I think the Conservative Christians on these forums are pseudo-trolls... but effecvtive and persistent ones! They have endless energy and tag-team well. Kind of like in real life.
Bleh. Much love to all, have a great weekend!

It has taken me three years (11k member) to get to 400 posts. I am a true slacker. But, do not understimate! I have read MacRumors every day since joining (well, except when I traveled to Dublan that one time) and I have forged the Great Order of the Knights Macrumborites.
Okay. I have been at work way too long. I need a double Jack & Diet Coke right about now...

You too, Balin! :) Have fun with your new toy (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=121164), you lucky troll! :D
I'm waiting on a late FedEx man, otherwise I would be out drinking margaritas (or at least diet coke), with you in spirit.
