Can someone accurately translate the Oct 2 2002 entry from this site?
http://www.kodawarisan.com/ug/
I tried the auto-translators and they don't give a good translation.

Hmmmmm....
From what I can make out of it, it seems to say that the Powerbooks will get a Superdrive along with a price cut.
BTW, I wish ***** wasn't censored cuz everytime Matsush*ta is mentioned it looks funny.:(

Of course there will be a new Powerbook...the question is when?
Is this saying MWSF03? That would be one real long time for an update...

Well, not unless there is a speed bump in between....which would be fine for most people. But the rumors are pretty scarce - someone needs to do some digging and find out what's going on.

"the room of prejudice"??
"according to ordinary year"? who is ORDINARY YEAR? :D
"the possibility of being loaded?" :-)
i think we have some japanese friends here who could translate the article a lot accurately right?

It appears they are saying...
Work began on a new Superdrive equipped PowerBook back when the PowerBook G4(DVI) was introduced and they are simply waiting on supplies of the recently announced slot-loading Superdrive by Matsu****a. Prices of current models are coming down and inventory levels are dropping so an announcement must be coming soon.
That is how I read the translation.

Jeezus, these translations are numbing my mind!
Here ya go:
-------------------
- Who will host Macworld 2003? Steve, of course!
According to sources, as always, Steve will give the keynote address at MacWorld Expo SF 2003.
- Has production ended on the current PowerBook G4 models?
According to sources, Apple has begun manufacturing a new PowerBook G4(DVI) model. There is a possibility that the recently announced slot-loading SuperDrives by Matsu****a (Panasonic) will be used in the new PowerBooks. Prices for the current PowerBook G4 have dropped and inventory is decreasing as planned. It looks like Apple's plans for timing of an announcement will go unchanged.
-------------------
Is that better?
PS I didn't realize that Panasonic's Japan name required censoring.

it sounds like they are getting slot load super drives.
now, if the get slot load AND a price drop AND a speed bump, i will be mucho unhappy with them...my TiBook isnt that old and dropping the price with more options added will tick me off. We will see, it doesnt sound like they will be getting this out real soon.

didn't these guys say that it was coming out later in october earlier? and this one says they are coming out "as planned"... which is... october?
My Japanese friend who isn't really a techie, but a native japanese speaker gave it a quick read through and summed it up as this:
They've stopped making the G4powerbooks of the current configuration and have started to make the new version. The site says that they are only guessing that the new slot loading superdrive from matsu****a may be included.

Oct 2, 2002, 05:23 PM
They also said they it would have an external Superdrive earlier. Who knows what their track record is anyway? But then, they do consider themselves...

It seems like you guys got the general idea. But I'll post an accurate translation of the article anyway:
"According to my sources, a new model has started production on the old Powerbook G4(DVI) assembly line. It is possible that the production of the recently announced Matsu****a slot-loading superdrive may be incorporated (waiting confirmation on this info). Considering that the prices of the current Powerbook G4 are being reduced and the fact the the remaining stock at dealers are slowly diminishing, a new model has been expected."

Oct 2, 2002, 07:51 PM
the human translator is still the best. His sources say production of a new G4 Powerbook has started and looks like they include the recently announced Matsu****a(I had to say it) slot loading Super Drive since their production coincides with the new G4's.
Using rumor forsenics, it clues you into to that his sources possibly deal with Matsu****a in some way and used production info and current PB market info to confirm.
Elsewhere on the page, Mr. Kodawari, will be in SF for the keynote. Rumor mongers unite!

there's some auto censoring going on here. You can't get "Matsu" and "****a" in the same word. Why would anyone give a ****a about that?

It's already been done, but thanks for the opportunity. :)
I'm surprised the auto-translation didn't make Matsusita (Japanese government transliteration--uncensored--<lol>) into Pine Tree Beneath...which is what it means. :D

I'm not perfect in Japanese. But studied it and lived there for a while. So here is a translation.
-------------------
Is the Manufacturing of the Current PowerBook G4 Over?
According to information, the manufacturing of the new PowerBook G4 has already begun. With the recent announced availability of the Matsushta slot-loading SuperDrive, it is likely that the new PowerBook G4 will have the SuperDrive built in. Also with the steady decrease in the current PowerBook G4 supplies, it seems likely a planned announcement will come soon.

Well then, I guess we are not screwed as Apple has stated in the last two dozen quarterly conferences that it ships laptops by air, and air only. The only worry we have is if they can't get enough air cargo space as everyone else is trying to do the same right now; but as regular air cargo clients, they get priority at least.

Whew! I was afraid that I had lost it there;)
So to sum it up, the rumors is that apple stopped production on the current model and is producing a new one, may include an internal superdrive (by Panasonic? no Pioneer?), and will be announced soon. And soon could be 3rd week of October, or next year.
Looks like I'll just wait...and wait...and wait...:o

Oh to clear things up.. Matsu****a is not the Japanese Panasonic... Matsu****a is the mother company of Panasonic and National. National was made first, and spread along in Japan.. but stayed in the country.. of course that's why it's called National.. hehe.. Anyways, Matsuhita made Panasonic after that, and spread it through out the world. Panasonic makes TV's, stereo systems, and more entertainment electronics, while National makes home electronics such as rice pots.

a) Thanks to all of our Japanese friends for the good tranlation, Sherlock as a long way to go to come close!
b) Does anyone know how long it usually takes for a product that is stopped in production, like the current PB to sell off the shelf? Does Apple wait till they all sell or do they just let some of them sit around, unsold and ship the new product?
c) I can't wait for this thing! I wonder how long it will take CompUSA to get them one they are shipped?
d) I was told that, Apple said, that Panasonic was gonna,....oh *****, I forgot what I was gonna say...
NEW PB IN OCT!!!!!!!!!!!

Any world or news from other sources on this Matsu****a slot loading DVD-R drive? I've found nothing, save some word that Matsu****a designed the cd-rw/dvd combo drives for older powerbooks. As far as I can tell, there isn't even word of Matsu****a designing this new device. Can we get some info posted here if anyone has it?

Dude. Good CALL. That totally supports the end of the present product model's life. Apple is totally gearing up for a new powerbook... Sometimes even the most simple observations give you the best details.

Is there any new technologies out there for better batteries, whether a more efficient CPU or more likely a different type of battery? Any chance that makes it into a PB update in the near future?

I can't wait anymore! I hope this bad boy comes out in Oct, or I'll loose it! I've got close to $4000 cash buring a hole in my pocket, and I can't bring myself act like it's not there!
I would guess that Apple surely knows that there is a lot of pentup demand on this thing and will want it out in time for Christmas.
