I just ordered the PM G5 2.7DP and I am stoked. I've been crawling along lately with a graphite PM G4 and this will be a good upgrade for me. My big decision is, do I put the G5 on my desk so I can stare at it or do I put it under the desk where my G4 used to be? :)

I applaud you on your decision. That will be an awesome setup. Does you Graphite happen to be a dual 450? Is so it's the Mac that I'm using at the moment. I think that it was the best looking of all three designs. Currently have my Mac on he desktop. Just think that they look so great, that I would hate to hide my Mac.

I don't know if my opinion will matter in this situation but....

If anyone will recall a lot of people made fun of my decision to get a dual G4 over a G5 <cut> But that's just IHMO. I realise some people may actually need the power but I am willing to bet that number is far and few.

Personally, I really do need the speed - I can't wait to try out my dual 2.7, should be here Thursday. But of course, if the computer's speed and only the computer's speed were my goal, I would get a dual Opteron for about the same price, and it would be probably be faster for certain tasks. But, I would be less productive, and speed for me means more than just the computer's speed. I have used Linux and other unices, and I find I am most productive on OS X.

(FYI, I am a consultant, and for my work I develop custom numerical software for the oil and gas industry. I do also have a dual Xeon running Linux, but I log into it remotely, I never use it as a desktop machine).

Nah, mine's a first gen single processor. It is a nice looking machine though and I'm thinking of moving it to the living room as an iTunes player for my stereo and internet browser on my TV.

My new G5 should ship tomorrow! w00t!

My only complaint is that I was waiting for the Dual 2.0 to come down in price. It did, but without PCI-X slots. So I can't buy the HD card I wanted. Will have to spend the same money anyhow.

This is exactly why I bought a NEW RevB 2.0 dually at the education store
Red Tag Sale for $1699. the day the updates were announced.

The Rev B's still let you install the full 8 GB's of RAM and have 3 PCI-X slots.
The newest Rev C's are crippled in that respect only allowing up to 4 GB's of RAM and 3 standard PCI slots.

Actually, the PowerMacs have 4 total expansion slots, it's just that one is used by the factory installed GPU card.

I decided that the better expansion capabilites of the Rev B were more important to me than the latest features.
I can get a dual layer DVD drive, a second SATA HD and a better GPU card any time.

This 2.0 is schweeeet! :D

My order still says "Open" next to it in the order status.

Does this mean it is being built and it will just change to shipping when its ready ?

Or is it waiting to be built :o

Apple simply doesn't tell us. We don't know whether it's being built now or on the waiting list for being assembled before it gets shipped - like you said, "Open" is all we know.

ah thought that might be the case.

Its a pitty there isn't a webcam on the end of the production line so I can see when it rolls off :D

I just checked my order status and it says that it has moved from the Manufacturing stage to the Processing Shipment stage.

It would be cool if it ships today. Monday, the 9th, is my birthday! :D

I think that open means that Apple hasn't started to work on your order yet. Processing is when they are getting it ready to ship.

I got my dual 2.3 the day they were announced. I got my name on the list at the local Apple store and got a call within 30 minutes. Wasn't expecting a call for a few days to a week. Only problem, no Tiger "official" support until the 29th.

I'm very happy so far. Been a MAC user since March 2004 when I got a PB at work. Now if I can convert the wife, life will be good. :)

My 2.7 below was ordered on Tuesday but has the priority A option which effectively lets you jump the que a bit + get faster shipping. It is a business purchase. Delivery is EST as Friday.

The local Apple Store does have a number of 2.7s in stock in the UK though.

For anyone curious or bothered, my beast will have the below spec and be used for Video / Audio work.

Now if they do announce the new dual core dual processors at MWSF (no way they do it at the WWDC) - and it'll be just my luck now I u/g - I won't HAVE to run out and buy! Good value for the 1699, won't take a big hit if I have to sell to fund my next acquisition. ;-)

I'm so angry at the moment I could step off the deep end and go order a Dell.

I too am a victim of the famous "Bait And Switch", also known as "Replaced with New Product" feature with all of the same component numbers and descriptions. My CTO Dual 2.7 was supposed to ship today, day 5 of the 3-5 day estimated ship time. I had all assurances from Apple that everything looked good and it was scheduled to ship today. No one could explain what the "Replaced with New Product" "strategy" was on their status web site, and there were no notes on my order to indicate what had happened.

After waiting on hold for 20 minutes, the person I spoke to more or less assured me that there was absolutely no way that my system was going to ship today, and that Apple could not tell me what the new ETA was or what the holdup was until tomorrow when the "We're Sorry" email is sent.

My speculation is the 400GB drive upgrade, which I'm now regretting. The other CTO options I chose were BT, BT KB+MSE, AE. Stock memory, stock video, no PCI cards.

This was to be my 3rd Mac (PB 15 1.5, iMac 20 1.8 + PM 2x2.7), but I've got a strong case of buyers remorse at the moment.

Anyone else have a similar story? Or anyone get a CTO 2x2.7 with a 250GB drive that arrived?

Sorry dude, there's always going to have to be a wee bit of waiting with CTO stuff, even if they quote over-optimistic ship times. My stock 2.0 was supposed to arrive the day after I ordered it but got held up. Trust me, I was both frustrated and suffered from buyer's remorse (particularly when new iMacs are announced and you can no longer cancel your order).

But in the end, is a delay of a matter of days that big a deal when you're making such a significant investment? Don't let it get to you and enjoy your beast of a machine when it arrives :)

Looks as if people aren't happy with this Power Mac G5 update...At all! I mean c'mon guys, haven't you seen the benchmarks for the new Pentium dual-cores yet? They're either near up to par or under par with the previous 3.8 Ghz P4s, but they're clocked at lower clock speeds. Do you really think that Apple is really that far behind yet? I certainly don't think so...Yet at least. Think about it: the competition is stuck with ONE dual-core processor, as opposed to TWO separate processors. So in theory, they'll be similar in performance. But there will be a time when they will release dual-cores, and they'll release it when the time is RIGHT.

Of course we'd like to see the performance of 2 separate chips into 1 chip. Maybe something special will happen at WWDC that we won't expect! Just wait maybe another 6 months, and I assure you Apple and IBM will come up with a POWERFUL Power Mac update. I can already smell the PowerBook G5s coming...... :D

I hear you. All of my Macs were CTO. I guess I was banking on their estimates being on the conservative side, and was hoping the system would be here by now, not potentially delayed for another X amount of time.

Just an update... It looks like PROCESSORS are the problem. I checked the web site, and everything is "Same Day" stock. 1.8 is 2-4 days, 2.0 is 3-5, 2.3 is 3-5, and the 2.7 now says 5-7 days.

The part that really annoys me, though, is the poster a few back that got bumped from 5/4 to 5/13. That's ETA +7 days, or basically he could have ordered the system from scratch today. That tells me that the folks that got the "Replaced With" treatment got bumped to the back of the line, which is, IMHO, terrible customer service. My ship date still says 5/4, and 5.4 has about 70 minutes left in my time zone, so I'm not holding my breath.

<sigh>

Tempted to forego the CTO, drive to an Apple store, and buy a stock system. I really wanted bluetooth on board. The other CTO options I could do myself later...

Yeah, I'll confirm that. I got Tiger in the box with my Powermac on the day Tiger was released - no update disks or anything, preinstalled and right on the Software Restore disks.

Admittedly, it was a Rev C - only wish we had access to those awesome refurb / close out prices outside the US :)

This is Bait and Switch.
No other co. could get away with as long as Apple has.

May 5, 2005, 01:32 PM
People. In the scope of things a few days delay is nothing to get into tizzy about. During the last rev update the 2.5 duals had up to 4 month delays after the first one shipped. I was running the spreadsheet for a while tracking 200+ shipment delays in a simular MR thread. Apple learned from that experience. Think positive.

Nugget
May 5, 2005, 01:39 PM
Think positive.

I totally agree. My 2.7 order got hit by the weird "replaced with identical kit" weirdness and my ship date got pushed off until late next week. I'm having a tough time getting worked up over it - it'll arrive when it arrives and one more week of waiting is nothing compared the several years it will be in service.

The only frustrating part for me is staring at this cinema display (which arrived three days ago) that I can't actually plug in to anything.

itsa
May 5, 2005, 02:49 PM
Apple learned from that experience.

It appears they did not!
I took on extra work knowing I had this unit coming. Plus I sold one of mine. I will need to rent one from another studio now. On top of that, I'm up against offering my customer a discount for taking longer then I said. I will lose over a grand on their unlearned experience when it's all said and done.
If you can't keep your word what can you be trusted with?

I'm very sorry to hear that. Was hoping that Apple had learned it's lesson from the release of Rev. B. On the bright side, that's about three week. Last time customers were waiting up to three months. Hope that might help. Think that we need to give Apple the benefit of the doubt at this early point in its release.

The only frustrating part for me is staring at this cinema display (which arrived three days ago) that I can't actually plug in to anything.

I'm in the same boat... I did hook it up to my older G4.
Can't help but think they pulled the bait and switch just because they know many people will get a display too. Could be just trying to get rid of some stock.
Maybe that's what they will update at WWDC.
All in all... this 20" is unreal... Looks way better than I thought it would.

Must be quite a big boat because I'm also in the exact same situation!

...except I bought a 23" and it doesn't work with my older G4's rage 128 or Radeon 7000 card. With the blank screen I can't even get assurance if the display works or not!

This morning I received an email stating my shipment had been delayed from "on or before 5/4" to "on or before 5/16." But I now have an email with a Fedex tracking number, and fedex says it will arrive tomorrow!

This was a dual 2.7 with Airport, Bluetooth, Modem, and Nvidia 6800. I might well be one of the first to get one, from the sound of things.

I am so bummed. I checked the shipping status for my G5 system this morning and found that it sat on the truck at Anaheim from midnight until 7:30 pm last night.... an entire day! I left from Anaheim thos morning. Now the estimated delivery date has been pushed back a day. :(

Not to gloat, but a certain 58 lb package is "on Fedex vehicle for delivery." So, clearly Apple isn't holding back on all of their CTO 2.7 G5's. Unless they are shipping a package full of rocks just to pull one over on me

yeah... I feel so... processed.
Someone put me in my place today however. They asked me, ("why don't you just get a Dell?)" .
The truth is I will never own another windows unit in my life. I love my macs. I just need to stay away from The Apple Store. I guess I will go back to MacMAll and just pay the higher price knowing they will tell me if it's in stock or not.
The thing that really bothers me is... when I order it I asked the rep if they still had them in stock. He said.. "Oh yeah, for sure, it just came out today".
I asked... so I'm on the top of the list? he said. "very top"
With that info I sold my main editing unit.

AppleCare is a tangible product. They ship you the little red box with the enrollment card inside that contains your applecare number.

Applecare appears first on the list, then powermac and finally display.

So I expect it's just a auto response error - it only refers to it in code form - very weird

I waited. First for the powermac updates, then for the imac updates. But I still can't make a decision.

I am looking to buy a desktop. The last computer I bought was a 233 g3 imac, so I'm due. I want something that will allow me to work in After Effects, edit video and I'm dying to play some games. Any of the new computers will scream speed compared to what I'm used to.

I've already ruled out that beautiful imac; I can't justify spending all that $$ on a pretty box that can't be upgraded, and the squawks about the already outdated video card leave me cold. Plus, I'm serious about doing image processing, and I imagine the dual processors will help with that. But please correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyway, here are my questions:
Should I be considering the dual 1.8? Would it be that much slower than a dual 2.0 for the money? (Money is a big concern.)

What are the advantages of the pci-X ports on the earlier version of the dual 2.0? I don't understand the pci vs pci-X thing. Is this a reason to buy the earlier version?

Should I wait until WWDC is over just in case prices drop with the announcement of something fabulous? Is this likely?

It really is between the dual 1.8 and either version of the 2.0's, as I have limited funds. I don't mind upgrading slowly to a new video card and more ram.

Thanks in advance,
natalie

I purchased the PRO upgrade for QT 6.0. Now I will have to purchase the upgrade again for QT 7.0. While $30 is not much, shouldn't the first pro upgrade carry over into QT 7.0? You might argue that every company charges for major software upgrades and that going from QT 6 pro to QT 7 pro is a chargeable upgrade. However, is this a new policy for Quicktime? Anybody with QT 5.0 pro remember paying again to upgrade to QT 6.0 pro?

In regards to your other comment I would seriously consider an iMac if you don’t have much money those are nice machines. When we talk about the new crippled 2.0, did Apple simply take the 2.0 chips and put them on the old 1.8 motherboards? How else could they eliminate 4 Gig of ram. I imagine they knew that if people had a choice of the 2.0 vs. the 2.3, both with the same features, people would buy the 2.0 for $500.00 less. I wonder what the cost difference of the motherboards is?

Well, I ordered my first ever new computer yesterday! Got a bargain on a Dual 2.5GHz from the UK Apple Store. Ordered it in the morning, and couldn't believe it when I checked my email in the afternoon and I had a shipping notice. Really threw me off as I'd been umming and ahhing all day over the purchase and it was already winging its way to me.

Oh dear, it was going so well, then Apple had to fubar on me.

No Tiger in the box, scratched case, damaged heatsink/radiator, Geforce 5200 instead of a Radeon 9600, wrong hard drive and memory config. Call twice to get it sorted and get mucked about.

Called again this morning and told them to refund me, they'd had their chance. Very poor show, but it's not surprising - Apple UK too frequently give awful customer service. You're not getting my hard-earned this time Apple.

Oh well, roll on cheaper 3GHz systems at WWDC! ;)

Well, it isn't really crippled in the same sense that the dual 1.8 GHz system was. The dual 1.8 had a front-side bus (FSB) of 600 MHz per CPU. The FSB on the new dual 2.0 GHz system is 1.0 GHz per CPU.

The only differences that I seen between the old and new 2.0 dual system is the downgrade to only 4 gig of memory and the lack of PCI-X.

A very wise decision. My thought about the mini is that I already have a G4. Now I want to move up to a G5. In order to avoid having to look at a 20" that can't bee used, found it best to have Apple ship all items at the same time. I didn't realize that Alabama didn't have any state sales tax. Unless I'm missing something. Apple only charges the tax when your own state has the tax.

Yea, we do have sales tax in Alabama. Apple is the first place that I have purchased anything from that has charged tax on an online purchase.

As for the shipping, I thought I had checked the option to ship everything at the same time, but I guess I did not. The LCD is still sitting in there in the box. It is killing me! :)

Just to recap, for others in this boat... I ordered it on 27-Apr within an hour of store.apple.com going live with the new machines. I originally had a 4-May ship estimate which got pushed off to 13-May with that weird "replaced with identical hardware" hiccup. My CTO Dual 2.7 arrived earlier today, and I finally (at 10:30pm) got a chance to crack open the box, light it up, and check it out. Everything looks exactly was I ordered it.... Bluetooth, Airport Extreme, 400GB drive. I shut down and added another 2x1GB sticks to bring it up to 2.5GB. No problems at all.

Now to go register my AppleCare and go order another 2GB of RAM and another 400GB drive to stripe or mirror... To stripe or to mirror... Oh well, I guess I have a couple of days to figure out.

Anyway, for anyone else that got the weird "Replaced With New Product" message and a delivery bump to 5/16 or later, my machine was supposed to ship on 5/4 and it shipped on 5/7 (yes, Saturday) and arrived via Fedex P1 this morning. but anyway... I think that is what the "replaced" order was. I can't see how they could hold people up for that.
I would have happily paid $70.00 for their in the Box OS rather the money I lost not have a editing unit in for 6 days.

Well, it's here...

My invoice shows "Item Added, Mass CTO conversion 05/04/20 11:11", but there is nothing new on the order -- part number wise or description wise... Oh well.

What brand memory did you use? I'm considering getting some off brand stuff but am a little leary to do so.

Thanks,
Dave

I'm not sure what kind of memory that he purchased. Crucial is the one recommended most by MacRumor members, they have a life time warranty.

Heh. Even with nothing I could really do with it, I took mine out of the box at least. :) Even took pics (http://slacker.com/photos/powermac). It's on the floor now, though.

I opened the box and took a look inside. I read the manual cover to ... uhh... well, until the language change. :D

Dude... that 30" display is huge! I want one of those in the future, but I will be very happy with my 20" cinema display right now.

Well cool. . . My PowerMac went from "Sent to Manufacturing" to "Preparing Shipment" this evening. If they can get it out the door and onto a FedEx truck on Tuesday that means I won't have to sit in torture on Wednesday as Kerry describes receiving his machine in excrutiating detail. :)

Yep... this is killing me. Tomrorow is the big day, though. I just checked the tracking information and it is now on a truck heading out of the FedEx sort facility headed to Birmingham from Atlanta. Now I know for sure it will be here tomorrow.

Now, what can I dream up to tell the boss as to why I will not be able to make it into work tomorrow? :D ;)

I just ordered an iPod mini dock and some 16x DVD+R media yesterday with the money that I got from my wife's grandmother for my birthday. I think I will take some of the money that I didn't get for my birthday and order up another gig or two of RAM. I ordered my Power Mac with a gig in it to start. I think I need more. :D

The more the merrier in my book. Although you can definitely get by with less. 512MB doesn't quite do it, but 1GB is acceptable for a lot of things. I'm sticking a bunch in now since RAM seems reasonably priced. I figure if I wait too long the supply/demand of DDR400s will change and make it not worth it to add more RAM to an 'older' system.

I made the mistake (again) of not buying another 512MB DIMM. My iMac came with a 512MB stick that I yanked out and replaced with 2 Patriot 1GB DIMMS. I keep meaning to pick up another single 512MB chip to pair with this one.

Sounds like your machine will arrive tomorrow. Have FUN!! I've only got about 2.5 hours of time in on this box, but I can tell already it's going to get a TON of use and a lot of enjoyment.

Now if Apani would just fix their VPN client for 10.4. I'd love to kick them in the shins...

OK - applestore order status is driving me nuts !!!

Apple sent me an email saying the item that was out of stock would be in on or before 13th May.

Since I received this email last friday (when my powermac was to ship) the order status has remained the same -- "processing order , est. shipping 5 May"

its seems strange to me that it should still have the old shipping date and why doesn't it say "sending to manufacturing" by now.

2 days left -- i expect another delay email :(

Sorry, but from what I've observed the timing seems to vary. Probably depends on product availability and what extras that you ordered. Although I do think that when shipping nears your Mac moves through quicker.

My custom build order went from "Sending to manufacturing" to "Preparing for shipment" in the same day, so yes it's possible. The web status is highly unreliable. I wouldn't pay to much attention to that. The bad news is that you'll still suffer stress even after it's shipped. Mine was shipped 7 days ago and it's not even in the UK yet. :(

Question to those that have one: I'll be using the 23" Cinema Display I ordered with my computer but I also to want to hook up my old 21" CRT studio display with a VGA connector. Does the G5 come with a DVI to VGA adaptor?

I could also remove my old Radeon 7000 PCI card from my old G4 to get a VGA port...

Sorry to hear of your shipping hassles. I had sort of the same issue, but not near as bad. Last Monday was my birthday. When I first got the notice that my Power Mac had been shipped last week, it was estimated to be delivered on 5/10. I was thinking just maybe it might get here early for my birthday. :)

Well, it sat in the sorting facility in Anaheim, CA for an entire day and did not ship until last Saturday. So, when I checked again Monday, it said the estimated ship date was 5/11. It was a painful extra day, but I did finally get it Wednesday while I was at work. Unfortunately, I did not get to lay my hands on it and start settting it up until very late that night. :(

I am having fun now, though.

That deal I thought I had Saturday turned out to be bogus because a new phone sales guy told me I could pay with a money order. After putting he money in the bank on Monday and calling Apple about using my VISA bank card, I found out he was wrong and I had no order in fact.

Then about 1 am Tuesday morning I found all the D2 and D2.5 deals back on the red tag page and this time I was able to place another order for the $2299 D2.5 G5 and received it Friday morning.

Now back to figuring out how to sell the D2 before it is worthless. :)

Hi! Have you tried looking in here?: http://www.apecode.com/appletrack/
I have ordered a PM 2.3 Dual (BTO) and a 20-inch ACD. That web tells me the Powermac has arrived at somewhere in Netherland 15 hours after "Out for delivery LUXEMBOURG..." (Arnham probably), but the status in the AppleStore has not been updated yet. If my experience from another past orders informs me correctly, the Powermac is "merged in transit" with the rest ordered products in Arnham, just before TNT picks up all the boxes and brings them to your house. At least that's what I think will happen (BTW, I'm spanish, I'm sorry for my poor english) If you have some news post please! ;)

Hi all. I'm getting ready to replace my old 2000 Sawtooth G4 PowerMac with the new 2.7GHz G5 PowerMac, and have a question about the video card. Earlier in the year I upgraded my Sawtooth with a Radeon 9800 Pro (128MB) Retail video card. I see that the stock card in the new G5 is a Radeon 9650 (256MB) video card, and wonder whether I should swap it out with my 9800? I have a 23" Apple Cinema Display, which works fine on my Sawtooth running Tiger, so doubt I'll miss the 256MB in the 9650. However, will I notice a performance improvement in the 9800? I think I should, but it is an AGP 2x/4x card, vice the 9650's AGP 8x. Any advice?

May 22, 2005, 06:39 PM
I'd expect the 9800 to be superior to the 9650 in every way except one -- the 9650 can drive a 30" Cinema Display. Beyond that, you'll be better off with the 9800.

I've been a Mac person since the first 128k version.
I've owned a bunch of Macs and now I'm happily doing audio work on a Dual 800 G4 w 10.3.8.

I am amazed at the reliability of this system.
It doesn't crash! (After 15 years with Macs, this is amazing to me)

My DAW is wanting more power to run more plugins, but I am afraid to upgrade.

Do the G5s with Tiger have this kind of stability in an audio studio environment?

Is 2.7ghz a good place to jump back in?

and nah its a 20inch but it feels like a 30inch compared to my 15inch imac g4 screen :D -- no way could I buy anything bigger, i would be gutted if i broke it at the price of a 23/30

I was worried at first when I turned it on because it sounded like a kettle boiling with that liquid cooling sorting itself out - very strange

Tell me more about the gurgling sound, and does your power supply chirp as many have noted? Any anomalies with the fans running wild? I'm getting close, just waiting for the Jobs Keynote at the WWDC to pull the trigger.

Hi, since I installed Tiger, my SETI screen saver no longer works. Bummer... So, I now have to run it as an app, which is really annoying. First off, it's cut my daily work units down to just under 2 (from over 3), and I have to quit it every time I want to use the Mac (since it consumes 100% of my CPU). Maybe with the upcoming G5 and its second CPU that won't be an issue, but for now it is. Anyway, I'm thinking about quitting SETI when I hit 1750 units if they don't update the screen saver. I see that Folding@Home also runs as a screen saver. Does it still work with Tiger? I'm happy to run these distributed apps in the background, or as a screen saver, to use idle cycles, but I'd like to just install it and forget it, and that's not working now with SETI. :(

Hi Dave

I hope he has no news about new powermacs at wwdc - but thats just me being selfish :D

I think the gurgling sound was just really the recovery from transit - it seemed to have been tossed around alot (box looks like its been treated with sandpaper) - anyway i haven't heard it since.

The fans turn on and off all the time - quiet loud but not bad, they kind of sound like a wind .... whoooo... whooo. .. whoo

Yeah i get the chirping sound from the power when i turn it on at the plug and turn it off - i've never come across this before although this is my first G5

Thanks
David

I know what you mean. It was tough buying so close to the WWDC speech. But the dual 2.5 refurbs @$2299 were too cheap to pass up. And I noticed that the same thing (when they appear for a moment) is now priced at $2699 on the refurb page - and even at that price they were gone in minutes. I guess someone at Apple figured out that the number 2.5 is larger than 2.3.

Mine arrived 3 days after ordering with ONE GB of RAM instead of the 512 MB promised and a 4x Sony A10U NOT "Super" Drive made in September of 2003. Of course I called Apple when I discovered this yesterday (was too busy to run it until then and wanted to wait for my two 1 GB sticks to arrive) and arranged for an exchange for a Pioneer DVR 108 or maybe a 109 if the dealer asks nice. No biggie. DVR-109's now cost $56 including free shipping and sales tax in California.

Anyway, yes the fans have a tendency to accelerate more often than they do on the Dual 2 I am leaving behind. But the speed is noticably faster and well worth the upgrade. A year ago I bought the Dual 2 for $1999 the same way. It arrived with a DVR-107 8x SuperDrive, ONE GB of RAM and a 250 GB Hard Drive. Now for $300 more I have 25% more speed. All I had to do was swap out the hard drives, add my two 1 GB sticks and I still have a 3 GB PowerMac G5 that's a lot snappier expandible to 7 GB while leaving all 3 GB of 512 sticks in the dual 2 for resale. ;)

Hi Dave Marsh

With folding it's actually better not to run it as a screen saver. Mine is running in the background. My processors can run 100% folding while I'm not using my Mac. The folding automatically decreases when a processor is needed for a user program running. Just install and not give it another thought.

Hi all. I don't really expect Steve to announce any tower upgrades at the WWDC, but I just can't buy until I confirm that negative.

I have a Dual 2.5GHz G5 at work and have crawled around on the floor trying to hear these sounds everyone is talking about. We're in an industrial park building and the sound from the air conditioners in the ceiling creates a lot of white noise that effectively blocks out any but the loudest, most obvious sounds. That said, placing my ear about five inches from the front of the tower at the bottom of the case nearest the power supply, I could barely hear the occasional beep/chirp that I suppose others are talking about. If that's all it is, it won't be a problem for me, even at home.

And yes, I'll probably switch over to Folding@Home when I get my new Mac. I'm happy to share the clock cycles when I don't need them, but I'm not going to give the application a lot of attention after I set it up. Is Folding multiprocessor aware, i.e., when I'm not using the Mac will it make use of BOTH processors?

I'm also hoping that Steve will announce an upgrade to the Power Mac at WWDC. That is why I'm holding off on a purchase also.

Happy to hear that you have seriously considered folding with our team. Yes, whey you aren't using the Mac it will utilize both processor. Once installed there is a need to pay any attention, runs quietly on its own. When you need active processing power folding will automatically decrease.

Just be sure that your download and install the program for dual processors.
