Mac OS X Tiger Arriving

Several readers are reporting that their copies of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger has shipped from the Apple Store. This first batch of Mac OS X copies are expected to start arriving today. Several users have already received (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2005/04/20050422090517.shtml) their copies of Mac OS X 10.4 due to some unintentional early shipments.

On April 29th, Apple will be officially hosting the worldwide release with events (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2005/04/20050420074204.shtml) at Apple Stores and Apple Retailers. There will be drawings for iPods and PowerBook giveaways as well as free door prizes. These are expected to include Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger T-Shirts.

I know it's sad, but after years of having Mac OS X I just don't know whether I can change the language. I mean, not the keyboard layout but the language in which all dialogs, menus etc come in.

While I'm German I'm so used having everything in English. German translations of the menus are usually so ...clumsy. Do I need to return it and wait another eternity for Tiger?

Go to www.tnt.com, click on express near the top of the page and enter your 9 digit consignment no. (take 2 digits off the end of the tracking no you got from apple) and press ok. you should get more detail. or you can do this on the uk tnt site but you must say that it an international consignment. but go to tnt.com for more info. mine's at nunetaton at the moment. good luck! p.s it will probably come about lunchtime tomorrow, but I can promise you, you'll have it tomorrow.

Just received and installed Tiger on my PB 1.5Ghz with 1.5GB Ram.

Everything seems lovely except that the system is running the processor at around 70% constantly, even when nothing is running (Except activity Monitor) and the Fan is now running permanently. This is not good.

Anyone else seeing this?

If Apple didn't push the 4-29 date so much, I wouldn't be so angry. But they plastered Friday everywhere, continuing to claim that it will arrive on time. I just don't get it, this isn't very hard: I've had Tiger on order for two weeks now (ordered on the 12th), and Apple has known that it was due on 4-29...I just don't see the room for error here.

If you ordered it with "Super Saver" shipping (as I did for my family pack), that's to be expected. I'm in no hurry, as I need to upgrade 5 systems at home and (eventually) quite a few more at work. I'm looking forward to the enhancements (especially better NFS performance), but there are always a few bugs to iron out.

I had some problems with Safari 2.0. My bank didn't recognize the browser when I tried to pay my bills online. The support told me that it would take at least a week to confirm the browser.
So if anyone (like me) havent paid their bills yet. Wait and install Tiger until you have made all the transactions with your bank.

I ordered MS Office 2004 and pre-ordered Tiger at the same time, almost two weeks ago. I requested they just be shipped together because I wasn't going to bother installing Office until I upgraded to Tiger. So a package shipped out Monday of this week via FedEx and I thought it was both Office and Tiger coming early. The package arrived yesterday, it was just Office. I was so disappointed opening up the box and not see Tiger. Tiger supposedly shipped today. I'm skeptical I will get it tomorrow as it doesn't seem to be in FexEx's tracking system yet.

Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised, but I doubt it. I find it irritating that I might not get Tiger until Monday, especially since they had sent a package out to me earlier this week and I had requested they be shipped together, not separately. It's not the end of the world or anything, but it is still annoying. :mad: :( :mad:

Installed 6 hour ago on my powerbook G4 1.3.

Everithing is ok. Common applications like Adobe CS Suite, Macromedia Studio and similar work without any problem (so far).

The new mail is great... it was nice to have same interface implemented also in other aplication.

Spotlight work very well. You just have to wait 30-40 minutes after installing OS for first time indexing.

The only problem I have found is with PGPMail. Just uninstalled it in the hope o a new compatible version soon.

I have the impression that some applications lunch faster.

No other perceptible speed inprovment on the standard system operation. Havn't find a way for now to test OpenGL performance and other stuff.

Safari RSS work very well. I'ts simple and fast.

I have also repaired my permission with disk utils and it was incredible fast compared to the Panther version.

Dashboard is nice, fast and work well.

If you are a developer, you have olso to take a look at the new Xcode 2.0. There are also a lot of new things in cocoa that can realy help developers in speed up the building of an application (data model seems to be great). I think this OSX release will open the road to more and better write Shareware in the near future.

There are also some little security features like "Use secure virtual memory" that protect virtual memory files from other users access. Or the safari "Private Browsing" that let an user on a shared machine to navigate without filling the History.

For the one that use Quicktime Pro 6, be advised, you have to buy a new licence for QT 7.

Called Apple yesterday to upgrade shipment method so I could have it for the weekend and got a recording that "All who ordered Tiger by April 25th WILL have Tiger by 4pm Friday" - unless FedEx screws up. Does it have anything to do with Virex? which appears to be having issues too. When starting up it is giving the following alert.

I agree this is not acceptable. I would not have ordered it from the online store had I thought that it wouldn't be here on 4/29. This is very upsetting to hear. I ordered the family pack the day they announced Tiger and it is still preparing shipment. I remember reading that .Mac 3.0 might not support Virex because it isn't ready for 10.4 yet. From appleinsider.com:

"Along with the release of the new service, sources said Apple will begin to phase out support for the currently featured Virex anti-virus software, which is not yet compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. However, the company will continue to allow downloads of the software for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther users."

Don't need it for a short while anyway. They should come up with a compatible version soon. Although I'm shocked that they haven't yet, since 10.4 has been available to developers for a LONG TIME!

Looks like mine is on the truck!

I do have a question though: I want to save as much of my available hard drive space as possible, so I only want to install the printer drivers I need and not install any of the foreign fonts. If I go through the custom install and turn these off, will it also erase the ones that Panther installed? If not, do I just trash the existing folder or is there an easier way to accomplish this?

It seems like a lot of us are in this boat. A lot of us are very upset right now because we were the first to order it and we won't be getting it until next week. You can call apple and make them cancel your order, then go get Tiger at an apple store tomorrow. Otherwise, have patience (I know you must because you have been waiting 17 days already and now they are making it longer).

I remember reading that .Mac 3.0 might not support Virex because it isn't ready for 10.4 yet. From appleinsider.com:

"Along with the release of the new service, sources said Apple will begin to phase out support for the currently featured Virex anti-virus software, which is not yet compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. However, the company will continue to allow downloads of the software for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther users."

Don't need it for a short while anyway. They should come up with a compatible version soon. Although I'm shocked that they haven't yet, since 10.4 has been available to developers for a LONG TIME!

You need to remove all traces of Virex, it has settled down now.

Just received and installed Tiger on my PB 1.5Ghz with 1.5GB Ram.

Everything seems lovely except that the system is running the processor at around 70% constantly, even when nothing is running (Except activity Monitor) and the Fan is now running permanently. This is not good.

Anyone else seeing this?

Are you a dot mac subscriber and installed Virex? Switch to 'All Processes' in Activity Monitor to see it. My 1 GHz TiBook was running at 100% processor load with nothing running. This is after a Clean install, and Virex was the cuplrit (which autostarts at Login). Use spotlight to find and remove anything and everything to do with 'Virex' and 'Vsheild', there are a bunch of pref files in addition to the application that need to be trashed. I removed them and my PBook runs cool as a cucumber. :) The need a Tiger upgrade for Virex methinks...

Go to apple.com, click store. in the right column click "education". Under "Shop for yourself", click "Find your K-12 school". On the next page, enter your zipcode and select your school.

Then order Tiger :D

To answer what some people were asking, yes it does come with an iWork 05 demo. And having 1 install DVD is so much nicer than multiple CD's except for those who don't have DVD drives. Much better than having to swap out CD's.

As for the 10% off at the event, I have an odd question. My dad is also interested in an iMac G5. He would be happy with the Rev. A version. If Apple does not release the new iMacs Friday alongside the release of Tiger, and I buy a current iMac model at 10% off on Friday for him, and if Apple starts shipping new iMacs next Tuesday and the price drops $200 each on the old models, will I be able to go back to the Apple Store and get the additional $200 off, even after having received the 10% discount?

This is really a question about Apple's price matching policy, which is 14 days if the price is lowered, then they claim they will give you the lower price. But on the $1500 iMac, 10% is $150, so will they just give me an extra $50, or give me $200 back?

To me, the 10% discount is separate from the new lower price, so if the price drops, Apple should give the full credit of $200 and not just the difference at $50.

Any opinions on what Apple would do?

This brings up another thought: If Apple would release the new iMacs, the old models should drop in price immediately, and if Apple would give 10% off the new lower price, that would ROCK. I could see the 20" 1.8GHz old iMac reduced from $1899 to $1599, then with 10% off, would be $1439!!!! :eek: Dang. Makes me think the new iMacs will not come out until Monday or Tuesday. :(

My copy was origionally supposed to ship on or before the 28th.. i got an email saying that due to unexpected delays, it is now scheduled to ship on or before 5/3.

macnn.com has an entry saying apple is being sued by TigerDirect for use of the word "Tiger." It says that "court injunction, if granted, could halt the rollout of new Mac OS X Tiger operating system." .. could this be reason why it was delayed for some of us?

I tracked mine on FedEx, and although it was sorted this morning at my local FedEx facility it was not put on the truck for delivery, reason, because it is NOT DUE for delivery yet but it is suppose to be delivered tomorrow. So I know my copy is sitting less then 50 miles from me, but I can't get it because someone said, Don't deliver this yet!!! I wonder if Apple was behind that.

Fresh is the only way. I find that backing up OS X to be extremely easy and with an external FW drive, fast too. So, why not. It probably doesn't matter, but it's nice to start everything over; helps me learn the new system. ;)

Nah, that's not an Apple thing. If they're really busy and your order technically doesn't need to be delivered that day, they'll delay it an extra day. FedEx does this to me all the time when I order stuff from Newegg. Newegg ships everything 3-day FedEx. Usually it arrives here in Naples/Fort Myers within two days, but I've had them hold it an extra day just because they can.

I know it's sad, but after years of having Mac OS X I just don't know whether I can change the language. I mean, not the keyboard layout but the language in which all dialogs, menus etc come in.

While I'm German I'm so used having everything in English. German translations of the menus are usually so ...clumsy. Do I need to return it and wait another eternity for Tiger?

Being a fairly recent convert from the dark side I have some questions on doing a clean install.

I'm in the process of backing up to an external fw drive. If I go to finder and choose everything that is under the "Macintosh HD" to back up, will that take care of all files for all users?

How do I actually do a "clean" install? I know how to reformat and reinstall in Windows but how do I go about it in Mac OS?

After installing Tiger, do I just restore all of my apps and files from the backup? I assume I need not restore the system, library, etc. folders?

Weird. Here I was thinking that this door tag left at my door was for a different package I was expecting since my order status still says it's being prepared for shipment. But actually, I just typed in the door tag number on fedex.com and the origin matches the rest of y'alls...and I also just received the other package I was getting it confused with.

So basically my Tiger shipped yesterday even though my order status still says Preparing. Tomorrow I will have it when FedEx attempts another delivery. Interesting. What a relief, but frustrating to know I could be installing right now if I was home when they tried to deliver!
